I found this old article by military correspondent Manoj Joshi written in 1998 for the magazine India today . It gives something that is supposedly kept officially under wraps---statewise composition of army . It's in a small column beside the article .

Haryana adds more muscle to Indian Army, leaves Punjab behind

Punjab, which was once the nursery of armed forces, was left far behind by Haryana.


Has Haryana replaced Punjab as the sword arm of the nation? The latest figures of the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, show that the Jat-land has taken the lead in producing officers, leaving Punjab, once the nursery of the armed forced, far behind.

Of the total 636 gentlemen cadets (GC) who passed out of IMA on Saturday, 62 are from Haryana, second only to Uttar Pradesh.

Despite having just 2.09% of the country’s population, Haryana has produced almost 10% officers in the current batch. Even the gold and silver medals have gone to two Haryanvis — Vishal Dahiya and Vikash Kalkal.

The state’s growing clout in the Army is reflected in the fact that former army chief VK Singh and the army chief-designate Dalbir Singh Suhag, both belong to Haryana.

Punjab has finished a lowly sixth in the list of states sending officers to the Army this time with just 33 cadets.

In the December 2013 passing out parade, 70 of 617 cadets who passed out from IMA were from Haryana. Uttar Pradesh, which is eight times bigger than Haryana with 16.49% population of the country, has maintained first position with 121 cadets.

Former deputy commandant of NDA, Major General (retired) BS Grewal says Haryanavis Chief of Nepal Army, general Gaurav Shumsher Rana took the salute from the officers during their passing out parade at Dehradun, following which the cadets were commissioned in different corps of the army on the rank of lieutenant.

Vishnu Peethambaran, who hails from Ernakulam district, has won the coveted Sword of Honour presented to the best all-round cadet at Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.

That was really an unwanted comment dude ..the problem with less Sikh officers is more youngsters are moving into other careers and also moving abroad which is happening in punjab plus the rampant drug abuse issue which is going on ..I hope you read this news of the latest pass out of IMA in which 7 sikh GC passed out who were picked up and trained by a retired Brig or Col rank officer from Punjab just to make sure the number of sikh officers numbers don't drop ..Khali movement is there since 1980s if we had people like Gen Brar being and sikh and carried out operation blue star ..I don't think there will be any shortage of people in Punjab today to join IA ...Lets not blow out the Khali thing unnecessarily

These figures are only for Army - I suggest doing a Complete Survey across Services. You will find alot of South Indian's in Navy / Airforce / Engineering fields.

Also another interesting thing to look at will be doing an overlayer on the data with the GDP per capita data of the states.

thats rubbish bro. i don't think khalistan movement isnt even on scale in india to b taken as a threat to national security. even after op bluestar, majority of sikhs served honourably in the armed forces and still do.

may b due to other reasons....may b they r going into other fields. read that many of them r interested in moving to west. may b that cud b a reason!

Plans are afoot to set up Haryana’s first armed forces’ preparatory institute in Sonepat. Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has given his approval for the proposed institute in principle in Khanda village in Sonepat, which would provide training to selected boys from the state for commission into the armed forces through National Defence Academy (NDA), Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officers Training Academy (OTA) and other central armed police forces.

It would run a two-year NDA preparatory course for boys, along with 10 plus 2 course, and three-year preparatory course for IMA and OTA, along with graduation degree. These courses will have 100 and 50 seats, respectively. Haryana, which has just about 2.09% of the country’s population, is known as the provider of finest military recruits and contributes for more than 10% of its total army recruits. The village panchayat has offered 30-acre land, which is lying barren. Located on Sonepat-Rohtak road, Khanda village is about five km from Kharkhoda and eight km from KMP Express Highway.
Khattar’s nod came after repeated representations by the village panchayat led by Raj Singh, the registrar of companies at Chandigarh, who hails from the village.

The proposed institute would be named after Banda Bahadur as the legend warrior had set up his first military headquarters and raised his army in Sehri Khanda village in 1709. He stayed at the Bairagi Thakurdwara of Mahant Kishore Das of Nirmohi Akhara for about nine months then.

The institute will give a further push to state youth’s recruitment in armed forces. Haryana, which has just about 2.09% of the country’s population, is known as the provider of finest military recruits and contributes for more than 10% of its total army recruits. Out of the total 832 successful cadets at IMA in 2017, 107 (13%) were from Haryana.

Singh, whose ancestors hosted the legend warrior Banda Bahadur, said. “This way the institute would also serve the purpose of recognising the contribution of the legendary warrior.” He added, the state government also has plans to have a regional centre of the institute for girls later in Lohgarh (Yamunanagar), which was the then capital of Banda Bahadur.”

i don't think we shud shame any region for not joining the AF; those who do join shud b respected as well.

but that being said its better to b a law abiding civilian than being like traitor to the core, ex army officer, ajai shukla! we all here respect the armed forces and our soldiers, most of us r not serving either. but see how much venom shukla is spewing on a daily basis, while claiming to be a colonel when he is actually a lt.col!!!

TN & Gujrat is making its contribution to the national growth and that shud be accounted.

TN contributes a lot of scientists to ISRO and DRDO. Every state contributes in its own way. It's a matter of inertia. If someone sees a family member join the Army, their younger siblings also follow that path, same with scientists. Gujaratis are into trade and contribute to India's $$ reserves.

J&K: 3 (J&K Light Infantry, J&K Rifles, Dogra Regt.)
As you can see, Punjab shares the honour with J&K.

States with the highest representation in the army:
Himachal Pradesh: 0.6% of India’s population, 4.68% of the armed forces = an over representation by 680%
Punjab: 2.4% of India's population, 16.6% of the armed forces = an over representation of 538%.
Haryana: 2.2% of India's population, 7.82% of the armed forces = an over representation of 255%.
As you can see, Punjab may dominate in terms of absolute numbers, but percentage-wise Himachal Pradesh takes the crown.

Punjab, again dominates the narrative, but Haryana comes in at a close second.
