Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is a network based on open protocol and will enable local commerce across segments, such as mobility, grocery, food order and delivery, hotel booking and travel, among others, to be discovered and engaged by any network-enabled application.

The platform aims to create new opportunities, curb digital monopolies and by supporting micro, small and medium enterprises and small traders and help them get on online platforms. It is an initiative of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

How ONDC aims to democratise the future of digital commerce

DPIIT has initiated the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) project, which aims to promote open networks developed on open sourced methodology, using open specifications and open network protocols independent of any specific platform.

At the Startup India Innovation week panel discussion, Anil Agrawal, additional secretary of Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), said the country is trying to become a pioneer in standard for ecommerce through ONDC.

"We are clear from the government's point of view that we are only a facilitator. We are not here to get into business. We are only creating standards. If you look at standardisation, it is something that anyone who is a pioneer in developing standards ultimately gets lots of business," Agrawal said while speaking about ONDC.
DPIIT has initiated the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) project, which aims to promote open networks developed on open sourced methodology, using open specifications and open network protocols independent of any specific platform. The task has been assigned to the Quality Council of India (QCI).

Opening up a fresh front of crackdown on large ecommerce platforms, the Centre has moved ahead with its plans for the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) by forming an advisory council comprising nine members, including National Health Authority CEO RS Sharma and Infosys non-executive chairman Nandan Nilekani.

ONDC has been incorporated as a private, non-profit company on December 30. Thirteen organisations of national repute have confirmed investment into ONDC, stated Adil Zainulbhai, Chairman, Quality Council of India and Capacity Building Commission.

Promoting open networks
ONDC aims at promoting open networks developed on open-sourced methodology, using open specifications and open network protocols independent of any specific platform.

According to the ministry, ONDC is expected to digitise the entire value chain, standardise operations, promote inclusion of suppliers, derive efficiencies in logistics, and enhance value for consumers.
A UPI of ecommerce
As UPI is to the digital payment domain, ONDC is to ecommerce in India. ONDC will enable, buyers, and sellers to be digitally visible and transact through an open network. no matter what platform/application they use.

ONDC will empower merchants and consumers by breaking silos to form a single network to drive innovation and scale, transforming all businesses from retail goods, food to mobility, said the ministry.

and i still feel, Indian industry should go for an consortium approach to develop these sort of digital tech like mobile OS, web browser, play store, web tech etc. a consortium or a company funded by all big mobile data/internet players in the country, ultimately it is their data products that gets consumed on mobile and desktop browsers.

otherwise the country will always be behind the curve on web technologies innovation.

EU as an institution funds such digital tech development for europe specific web applications.
when i wrote the above post, was not aware of ONDC.

Excerpt from ONDC Strategy paper released this month. similar idea as above.

Accordingly, Open Network for Digital Commerce entity has been incorporated on 30th December 2021 as a section 8 company (not for profit) with limited liability and subject to sound corporate governance norms, such as those required for listed companies. This company is majority-owned by private sector institutions to allow for the close alignment with market and flexibility and agility in decision making and resourcing as envisaged above for the success of this globally pioneering initiative.

Positioned as a “network”, the idea is to enable consumers to log in and look for products or services to meet their requirements. Based on their location, sellers will be listed along with the product details and price to enable the buyers to choose, sources familiar with the plan told TOI.

The proposed ONDC will be connected to payment gateways and in case of specific requirements the platform will also offer the delivery and logistics service providers.

An initial pilot involving auto-rickshaws and taxis has been conducted where cabbies and three-wheeler operators were asked to register.

Going forward, plans are afoot to focus on kirana stores, delivery service providers and FMCG players for tests in Delhi, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Kochi and Varanasi.

These pilots are planned over the next six months or so, sources said.Officials suggested that something like this has not been tried out in other parts of the world.

😁 LOL this sound too impressive to succeed , will be amazing if it does.

say you are setting up a digital retail company where ONDC is part of your tech infrastructure, on day 1 both you and your customers can start buying and selling on your platform. the customers are already registered in some other retail company already using ONDC.

At bare minimum you don’t have to spend any money on customer acquisition, since they are already available to you.

So there will more retail companies in the country who start with an advantage, hence more competition to big companies.

Amazon won't be a sitting duck. If you haven't noticed, the first shots are already being fired by amazon, check UPI payments in amazon. They have created barriers (increased no. o steps) to add and use UPI, you now are being asked to pay using Amazon Pay.

Its UX proven technique that if you increase MTO (Mean time to onboard) a platform, your customer will loose interest and will find a better solution (a quicker solution), that is either visa based card payment or amazon pay.

I knew Bezos is son of a b***!

It's not like we have not faced such situations in our professional lives, solution is the same "have clarity on what you want to achieve, prepare counter strategy and execute in our self interest".

no body is going to hand it us on a plate.
