Why are Mirage 2000s falling from the sky?
Last Updated: Thursday, April 05, 2012, 13:24
Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Even as the Indian Air Force is yet to decipher the reasons behind previous crashes, one more Mirage 2000 fighter jet crashed on Thursday.

A Mirage jet crashed in the Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan this morning; the pilots ejected to safety.

Mirage 2000s squadrons are based in Gwalior. These aircraft started getting inducted into the IAF in the mid-80s and have had a very good flight safety record - only six casualties in over 25 years of service with the IAF – but things turned worrisome recently.

Multi-role fighters, the Mirage 2000s are said to have been assigned the nuclear strike role by the Indian Air Force. They are proven machines and had performed remarkably well during the Kargil conflict in 2009.

Prior to today's crash, two Mirage 2000 fighters crashed in the last two months, forcing the IAF to ground the entire fleet for preliminary checks.

The IAF has also sought the help of aircraft manufacturing company Dassault in air-crash investigations. A team of engineers and technicians from France was in Gwalior for the same.

Also, the IAF has already ordered a Court of Inquiry (CoI) into the accidents.

The IAF had recently signed two deals worth over USD 3.2 billion for upgrading the capabilities of the Mirage 2000 with French companies Dassault, Thales and MBDA.

Dassault was recently awarded the contract for supplying 126 Rafale aircraft to the IAF.

Defence Minister AK Antony had told the Parliament on March 19 that the Indian Air Force has lost 33 fighter aircraft, including three Sukhoi-30MKI, in mishaps since 2008 and 26 defence personnel were killed in these crashes.

"During last three years-2008-2011, and current year up to March, 33 fighter aircraft including one Jaguar, two Mirage 2000, three Sukhoi-30 and 27 MiG-series and 10 helicopters have crashed," he said in a written reply to a question on crashes of IAF aircraft.

Something is wrong with the Mirages.

When our mirages crash they always do it in three's.
Last time between 23 Sept 2004 and 8 Nov 2004 we lost three Mirages similarly.

there is something wrong with mirage maintenance. its flown by experienced pilots, they are priority aircrafts of iaf and are given best from al quarters of iaf still they are falling like anything. moreover unjustified upgrade cost and french involvement is making me curious of possible sabotage

I do think our Armed Forces are much more compromised, than we would like to believe.

I think we dont have any Trainers left, after we have crashed 4. Or do we?

Aircraft is a very costly affair .That pilot should be put to trial to prove he is innocent.

Let the Rafale come which is 500 carore for one peace , These careless fighter will repeat the same and shift the onous to corrupt politician.

Spending 2 billion to upgrade these jets is a mistake. Time to cancel the contract for the upgrades, take that 2 billion, and buy more Sukhoi 30 MKIs.

As for the Rafale, I dont know how this would affect it winning the MMRCA. Hopefully Eurofighter will be given a chance to undercut the Dassault bid now.

Either something is really bad in the maintenance or some thing wrong with the new batch of spares.

Now what's wrong with the MIrages!? For the last 20 odd years, nothing serious happened and now they are falling like flies? I smell political corruption. Rafale must be fast tracked and any politician opposing or attempting to slow Rafale induction should be stripped off indian nationality and sent out... just like how Kudankulam protestors got their rears handed back.

We need jets now and thanks to this so-called government, our air force has become the joke of aviation world. But why isn't the ACM putting pressure on the MOD for fast tracking acquisition?

IMO Browne is the opposite of what Naik was and a Yes man in attitude to Madam G. Bikram Singh for Army is going to be another one if he gets appointed.
