European missile firm MBDA has pitched the Missile Moyenne Portée (Medium Range Missile) fifth generation anti-tank missile system for co-development and co-production in India. The company has opened preliminary discussions with the Indian Army and DRDO to pursue the pitch. The MMP is described by MBDA as a lightweight weapon system, easily man-portable high level of day and night, all-weather reconnaissance and identification capability, with a confined space firing capability, rapid reaction operation, firing sequence reversibility, lethality against a wide target set: hot and cold targets, including the latest MBTs, with collateral damage risk minimization qualities.


The Indian Army recently selected the Israeli Spike ATGM to meet its immediate requirement. The PARS 3 air-launched anti-armour missile for the ALH Rudra armed helicopter is currently under progress, with no decision made yet. The MMP, MBDA believes, will allow India to be involved in the crucial testing and advanced development phase of the weapon system to meet future needs just of the Indian armed forces but foreign armies as well. In December 2011, the French defence procurement agency DGA had awarded MBDA a risk reduction contract for the MMP programme that will now replace the MILAN weapon system which has been in service with the French armed forces since 1974, and with the Indian Army as well.

What this missile concept has is nice specially all-weather reconnaissance and identification capability,
It seems to be a new idea and quite interesting, but the trajectory of the missile in that case would be higher, no?

Well France/MBDA doesn't have a home made 3rd gen ATGM, they themselves rely on the Javelin, 4th Gen Javelin based co-dev with the US is better bet since, it has greater global sale potential than any EU based collab. How realistic is the 5th gen when they do not have enough budget for such things. Any EU based collab would cost us a lot more.

The US industry is far better at developing, testing, fielding and exporting such systems to a greater audience and an Indo-US collab would allow our industry to pick up significantly, we could be the lead suppliers for key components for missiles assembled in the US for domestic use at far lower costs for both the US and off course the large orders would allow the overall cost of the missiles to be lower. While our own domestic assembly could cater for regional needs, specifically our partners around the Indian ocean.

Russia Supplied About 7000 Upgraded 9M113 Konkurs Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) to India
India had received approximately 7,000 upgraded Russian 9M113 Konkurs (NATO reporting name: AT-5 Spandrel) anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) by late 2015, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute`s (SIPRI) arms transfer database.

Russia and India signed the contract to supply about 10,000 Konkurs anti-tank missiles to Indian Armed Forces in 2012. The agreement was valued at USD225 million. The deliveries of the ATGMs started in 2013. As of late 2015 India received about 7,000 missiles. The ending date of the 9M113 deliveries is not disclosed. Konkurs missiles are partially produced in India under Russian license.
Indian Armed Forces have notified the country`s government on the shortage of anti-tank weapons for many times. Russian reliable 9M113 Konkurs missiles will relieve the aforementioned problem.

A first generation ATGM were the missiles, where user had to manually steer the missile to its target using joysticks.
Second generation ATGM were missiles where instead of steering the missile physically, one has to only keep the cross hair on the target. Based on input through attached OFC or radio link the missile guide itself to the target.
Third generation ATGM's are what said to be Fire and Forget. Means you first tag the target and then fire. The missile guide itself to its target using its visual or electronic tracker.
Forth generation ATGMs like Spike involve one more optional option in between Fire and Forget. Its like Fire, Observe and Update and Forget. Means you could tag the target or change the target when the missile is in its upward motion after firing.
