Indian Army troops and French Army troops are conducting a joint Army Exercise 'SHAKTI 2013' in France to practice and validate antiterrorist operations and drills in snowbound and mountainous areas. This is the second joint military exercise between the two countries with the first one being held in India in October 2011.

The exercise is being conducted from 09 Sep to 20 Sep 2013 at Grenoble in French Alps. Approximately sixty troops from both the countries are participating in the exercise. The Indian Army troops have been drawn from the 5th Battalion the KUMAON Regt of South Western Command, while the Alpine troops of 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade are participating from the France Army.

The theme of the exercise is to conduct platoon level joint Counter Insurgency operations in high altitude mountainous terrain under the UN Charter, thus emphasizing the shared concerns of both countries about global terrorism. An added aim of the exercise is to qualitatively enhance knowledge of each others' military procedures thus increasing the scope for interoperability and better responsiveness to a common threat.

The Indian troops have undergone extensive training on rock craft, ice craft, advanced mountaineering techniques at High Altitude Warfare School at Sonamarg in Kashmir, in addition to tactical drills of close cordon and house intervention drills to fulfill the mandate of the joint exercise.

The twelve day exercise with France Army is being conducted in multiple modules in order to achieve complete integration between the two contingents at every stage. The vast experience and expertise gained by the Indian troops in high altitude areas like Siachen Glacier and in Counter Insurgency operations hold special importance to the France Army. Conduct of the joint exercise would therefore set the stage for greater defence cooperation between the two nations.

The second major military exercise between Indian Army and French Army, EXERCISE SHAKTI-13 has moved into the 'Tactical Phase' after a week-long 'Orientation Phase'. In the past week, the troops of the Indian Army Contingent belonging to 5th Battalion, The Kumaon Regiment underwent various modules acclimatizing themselves to the terrain, equipment and procedures followed by the French Army.
The exercise is being conducted in the general area of Tignes in the French Alps region while the contingent is located in a place called Lebouisse. Various activities conducted by the contingent include practice of rappelling at a rockface of approximately 80 meters at Le Chevrin and mountaineering practice on a training circuit called Via Ferratta. The circuit at Via Ferratta has different levels of difficulty and the well–trained Indian Contingent impressed their French hosts with their agility and climbing prowess.
The contingents from both countries have also developed a strong relationship over the past week by partnering each other in various joint activities like navigation exercises, medical casualty evacuation drills and presentations to each other on topics of mutual interest. The French Army Contingent was particularly impressed with the Indian Army's experiences in high altitude mountain warfare in the Siachen Glacier.
The stage has now been set for the next phase of the exercise with the troops moving to Vulmix, approximately 25 KMs from Lebouisse for the tactical part wherein operations relating to counter terrorism will be practiced. The preparations made by both contingents will be tested in an operational environment to derive maximum lessons and the aspects of interoperability as envisaged in the planning phase will therefore be validated in the final exercise.

What, did IA give them a slide show? French should go to Siachen to get true appreciation. (So should US Army 10th Mountain Division.)
