Expanding the Okha fleet of Hovercraft, the Indian Coast Guard commissioned Ship H-189, third of the series of 12 Air Cushion Vessels.
H-189 will be based at Okha under the Administrative and Operational Control of the Commander Coast Guard region (North-West), along with three earlier commissioned hovercrafts, stressing the priority given to the threats through western coast.
The Indian Coast Guard is expected to expand its fleet to other regions too, including Belapur, which already has a hovercraft port and the vessel is expected soon.
H-189 is a 21 meter long vessel with 31 tonnes displacement can achieve a maximum speed of 45 knots.
Hovercrafts are used in sensitive stretches where bigger vessels have lesser access and for shallow water operations.
India has three divisions of hovercraft with Mandapam hovercraft port for checking threats from southern waters, Haldia hovercraft port for threat from Bangladesh and Okha port for threat from Pakistan.
The vessel's primary role will be "surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and rendering assistance to small boats craft in distress at sea" said an official statement.
The vessel would have two officers leading the patrol with eleven personnel.
