Do you know what motorcycles they are using? They don't look like having anything over 250 cc engine. Enfield Bullet has 500 cc engine. Even the 350 cc engine will outperform these motorcycles.

Regarding HM Ambassador, blame it on the Birlas for not modernising it with time. Even its predecessor, the Morris Oxford came with a V6 variant.

Not really. Enfield has tied up with AVL, changed the gear shift side, introduced aluminium cylinders and made a lot of other changes.

The feedback I got from first hand users is that the old Enfield could travel for miles in the hot desert roads but not get jammed while Japanese Kawasaki or Hondas would have to be rested to cool the engine down. I am sure the Army is aware of what they are investing in.

True, Enfield is not the best out there. However, looking at those motorcycles of ANA, I still get the impression they are underpowered compared to our own Enfields. I don't know what exactly those motorcycles are, doesn't look like a large engine to me. Perhaps someone can provide more details.

Can someone please confirm that the Bullet rides better in desert conditions compared to modern bikes.

seems that these are 2 stroke bikes just like our rx100s and 135s.Its better to use these type 2 stroke bikes in harsh terrains where off roaders score well.

Bullets are like antique pieces which looks good thundering on the road but slow and not easy to maintain and mileage is not good as well.

For armed forces we should get better stuff.... btw Delhi Police has Pulsars which is fast/powerful and almost double the mileage of bullet.

Enfields are passé, Delhi Police to get Pulsars

Indian Army use two kind of bikes now..

1. bullet: It is still in use coz its a iconic bike in Army also it bigger engine is good over mountains..

2. Hero 100cc/ 135cc bikes are in use in MASS, As these bikes are easy to maintain and gives good average..

Though non of these bikes can be used in harsh terrains over rocks and dirt roads and Sand..

I am impressed with Hero Impulse, Its 200cc and deign for rugged roads with a ok average, It can replace the above two..

The bullets sold in India

maximum bhp
acceleration
maintenance
handling
braking
sound and image :fyeah:

also Bullet no where compares to other available option let it be chassis design, engine technology (push rod), top speed, off road capabilities, on road capabilities, no road capabilities or any thing except it have a good low end torque.

What about this one.....

If I am not wrong, BMW launched it in mid 80s also, with a JV with BGL (Bharat Gears Ltd.) a bike with a 650cc engine and shaft drive.....

BMW F650 GS (2012)

I would term BMW Funduro as an adventure tourer, it can serve as convoy escort but still not worth for the price paid. Bajaj have stake on KTM which have great offroad capable bikes if the defense force need some.

I have seen this machine at Ray Price Harley-Davidson in Raleigh. I think it is a 500cc single. It is designed for going off-road and hunting. Note the rifle scabbard on the left rear frame.

Kunal, do you have any idea if these bikes are ever retired and auctioned off. I would love to get my hands on one of these. The setup looks kickass, I dont care about the engine (though I hope they are 2 strokes) as I can put something else in there but this looks very promising.

Will be grateful if someone can get me info on how and when these bikes are disposed off.

pmaitra, bullet? really man? might as well send our men barefoot. that thing is more a liability than a resource.

bullets (any thumper for that matter) are the absolute epitome of form over function.

It literally reads as "Look at me, I ride big heavy metal bucket. I wear badass leather jacket. Dont mess with me. p.s. I dont get laid enough."

Never in all my years of dealing with engine tech (and I've been racing and rebuilding engines for 15 years now) have I seen a design that is so non-functional, inefficient and environmentally degrading. Do you know that to meet emission norms, they literally punch a hole in the exhaust so that fresh air mixes with the exhaust and dilutes it. An entire batch of bullets were sold this way and some morons were calling it a performance mod.:frusty:

The bullet in my eyes is the worst machine ever to be built. The Brits used to proud of this contraption and now that we have inherited this joke, many of us are proud of it.

Sorry to all the bulleteers :), my motto is simple "Four Strokes and Four wheels waste two"

btw, this is he bike that IA should be riding. The KTM EXC250. The best 2 stroke offroader ever built. The best offroader ever built. Forget deserts, if you are up for it, it will take half way up the everest.

Today Bajaj owns KTM. Almost all of it. No better time for IA to strike a deal with them.
