The Indian Army has completed trials for two 155 mm/52 calibre howitzer systems and is preparing a report for the Ministry of Defence.
Official sources said two competing 155 mm/52 cal towed gun systems and two 155 mm/52 cal self-propelled tracked howitzers recently completed maintainability acceptance trials and secured Directorate General of Quality Assurance clearance.
These processes followed summer and winter trials involving all four howitzers in Rajasthan in mid-2013 and Sikkim state in the Himalayas late last year and in January.
France's Nexter Systems modified its Trajan 155 mm/52 calibre for the Indian tender and Elbit submitted its ATHOS 2052 for the towed gun tender.

When is the Indian Army going to place the bulk order.

It is not the Army alone looking for the new guns to join the formations, it is the public mindset which is also expecting this change in attitude. Over 25 years with lack of newer guns, the public perception about Indian Army underwent a dramatic change. The public was lead to believe that Indian Army is two bit banana republic army. Arms merchants, mindless & reactionary media and these countless forums had lead to believe that India is a looser country in next war.

Far from the truth.

Much of this propaganda can be attributed to 20-25 years old boys in the forums who have not seen the business end of a gun, but commented with huge perception of being experts and lead the unsuspecting people to believe that Indian army has lost the edge. Thank God, something so eagerly awaited is finally joining the armed formations and will outshoot both Pakistan and China.

BAE and M777, tough luck.

India does have functioning artillery. The issue was inducting modern systems with more accurate fire.

My opinion is that India needs more Multiple Rocket Launch Systems. These will bring more results.

The Ukraine conflict (still going on) shows that self-propelled artillery is needed for RAPID or offensive divisions. This is a weak point currently. But Pakistan is in no position to take advantage of its greater numbers of self-propelled guns. Pakistan has weaknesses in other areas that forecloses any possibility of its forces getting deep into India.

As for China, India would need thousands of new guns as Chinese are much stronger compared to Pakistan. However the terrain does not favour a big war between China and India. There are other reasons too that point to direct China/India conflict being unlikely.
