In 2012 Rafale was selected over Eurofighter Typhoon as the winner of MMRCA. Reason cited for it's victory was it's lower bid compared to Typhoon. At that time deal was worth $11 billion.

"Unit-wise, the French plane is much cheaper than the Eurofighter. Moreover, the Indian air force, which is well equipped with French fighters, is favouring the French," An Indian source said in 2012

But there were many other reasons which led to the Rafale victory :-

1.)France maintains good relations with India. Unlike USA, which placed an arms embargo on India in 1998,France was the only western nation not to impose any sanctions. France fighter aircrafts also have a good reputation with IAF pilots and has been supplying weapons to India for a long time

2)In case of war, German law prohibits deliveries of weapons and spares, Italian law and public opinions would demand an embargo, while Spanish legislation is murky. What if after buying the Eurofighter we went to war? Would spares and weapons be forthcoming, or would we be embargoed?

3.)Weapons also played a significant role for us to opt for Rafale: not only is its weapons range mostly French-made, and thus not subject to a third-party embargo, but so are all of its sensors. Eurofighter, whose air-to-air missiles include the US-made AIM-120 Amraam and the German-led IRIS-T, and whose primary air-to-ground weapon is the US-made Paveway, was obviously at a competitive disadvantage in this respect.

4.)As this aircraft is produced by a consortium of four nations, each with different foreign policies and different attitudes and tolerances to arms exports. This meant India had to deal with 4 different nations in the case of Typhoon instead of 1

{Source for above 4 points (The Real Reasons for Rafale's Indian Victory)

Now It is 2014 and the deal costs $20 billion. One Rafale costs around $120 million compared to $80 million for one Eurofighter Typhoon. Britain tried to persuade Modi to opt for Typhoon and according to few rumours same thing will have in Modi's trip to Germany

Keeping in mind that Typhoon now costs less than Rafale and the above points, does Eurofighter Typhoon have a chance to become part of the Indian airforce?

Never read anywhere that France suspended arms supply to us,Can you share the source? Only thing they did was giving us permission to use Russian and Israeli weapons on Mirage 2000 IMO.

instead of going with the ties, performance wise and the cost of maintenance, rafale had edge over typhoons right ? so if mmrca is not scrapped, isn't it better to stick with rafales than typhoons ?

The same cost escalation would apply to EF. As of today, the French have spent their own money to bring the Rafale up to spec whereas a lot of the EF's technology is still being developed, so it should end up costing more eventually with IAF footing some of the bill.

In the future, the technologies that will be developed for Rafale will be decided by both the IAF and ALA which is of great benefit to the industry. We have practically bought ourselves into the Rafale program with very minimal expenditure, we won't be that lucky with the EF.

No substance in this report at all

The biggest problem for MMRCA contract is the budget, not the product.

If we take a look at the captial equipment allocation for this year's budget, and extrapolate the trend, then there is no chance for MMRCA contract getting signed by 2020.

The entire budget for capital equipment to all the three service arms have gone up just by 5000 Cr only. So where is the money for MMRCA deal?

Because the economic growth wont pick up in any sudden manner very soon for the govt to allocate money for MMRCA deal. By the time both the FGFA and Tejas mk-2 will be ready, further eroding the chances for the deal.
