DCNS, Rosoboronexport, Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems Sent Indian Future Aircraft Carrier RFI

Source : Our Bureau ~ Dated : Friday, July 17, 2015

The Indian Navy has issued a request for information to DCNS, Rosoboronexport, Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems for designing its 65000 ton future aircraft carrier.

The carrier is intended to be 300 meters long, capable of a top speed of 30 knots besides being equipped with an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) as an option, Indian media reported today.

It would have a catapult to launch fighter aircraft with arrested landing. The carrier should be able to carry around 30 aircraft plus 20 helicopters.

The carrier is the second of the new generation carriers planned in India. The first of which is under construction at the Cochin Shipyard in South India.

Terrible idea, and is demotivating to local shipyards like Cochin and Mazagaon. They could probably send out RFI for specific systems, but asking them for entire hull designs is dangerous.

Indian Navy's Naval Design Bureau is responsible for warship designs not the shipyards. Shipyard will be Indian and I am hoping it to be a private one.

I think we should put our ego aside and go for the best design possible. INS Vishal will cost upwards of $4 billion at the very least.

1. DCNS already has a strong presence in India (manufacturing scorpene submarines).

DCNS built aircraft carriers: French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle
DCNS built helicopter carriers: Mistral-class LHD

2. If EMALs are selected will the US allow this technology to be shared with Russians if Rosoboronexport is given the contract?

3. BAE Systems Maritime is undertaking a majority of the workload for the two Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers. As part of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, Thales and Babcock are also involved in the project. The company's shipyards have previously had experience of constructing large Amphibious assault ships, including the Ocean class LPH, the Albion class LPD and the Bay class LSD(A)s.

4. Beginning in the mid-1960s and extending into 1971, Lockheed built and delivered seven landing platform dock ships (LPDs) of the Cleveland and Trenton classes for the US Navy. These were the USS Denver (LPD-9), the USS Juneau (LPD-10), the USS Coronado (LPD-11), the USS Shreveport (LPD-12), the USS Nashville (LPD-13), the USS Trenton (LPD-14), and the USS Ponce (LPD-15). In 1978, Lockheed won the contract to construct the USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41) amphibious support transport ship.

This letter is a cover for something already decided. Why even bother. Just wait till July 22 and everything will be crystal clear (at least I hope so :p).
