lemontree, the british left us with about 600 independent kingdoms, how's that for unification ? I would have to agree with civfanatic, we would most likely have united on our own.
When were they independent??...Apart from Kashmir, Junagadh and Hyderabad, who else revolted to stay away??

answer to that when would be 'during british rule'. the princely states accepted the suzerainty of the brits but were independent, at a price of providing money and soldiers to the brits when called for. they had their own laws, administration, armed forces and in some cases even currency.
they were as independent as, say, japan or australia or canada are wrt US.

not sure what the 'revolts', which are post independence events that have to do with this fact.

Country flag
I think Six-Day war was most shameful and humiliating defeat in last 50 years.

A tiny country Israel with 3 Mn population without any help defeated Syria, Jordan, Egypt + Arab/African Muslim countries forces from Iraq, KSA, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, Pakistan, Sudan, Tunisia, Kuwait combined in just 6 days.

That was in 1967, Today after 44 years, One can imagine Israel defence capability.

if anything the 48 war was even more incredible, israel didn't even have time to organize itself after independence before being attacked. the arab troops included the well trained arab legion which fought for the british in WW2. some of the european jews went straight from a nazi concentration camp to the warzone with minimal training.

Meiji Japan was under one ruler, we were under 600.
that was during the british era. not to mention the fact that all of japan comes to about the size of a rajasthan. you have to compare like to like.
