When Che Guevara offered help to earthquake-hit Kashmir

NEW DELHI: Declassified files give details of Ernesto Che Guevara's only visit to India in 1959. The legendary communist revolutionary's global ambitions began with a triumph in Cuba and ended with his execution in Bolivia.

After meeting then PM Jawaharlal Nehru, Che left India from Kolkata. But before he left at the end of a two-week visit, an earthquake shook Kashmir. Reacting to the destruction there, Che wrote to Nehru on a Great Eastern Hotel letterhead: "Being aware of the terrible havoc in Kashmir, and willing to offer solidarity to the brother people and government of India, we wish to place at your disposal the cooperation of our people, to the extent it is possible for us, in order to alleviate the (sufferings of the) Kashmir people." The revolutionary signed off 'Che'.

Ahead of Che's arrival, S Sen of the MEA said in his briefing note: "Dr Guevara is suspected to be a communist by the Americans and the Brazilians. There are indications, however, that even if he had been involved with Communistic activities in Latin America, he is not an active Communist. In the prevailing atmosphere of Latin America, many youngsters become involved in the activities of the Communist Party in their student-days, but later they give it up. In American eyes, once a man becomes a Communist, he is to be treated as beyond redemption."
