Earlier models of Tu-22-which were struggling to achieve the required range and speed requirements- went through various modifications before the final version of 'Tu-22M3' emerged.
With a speed of more than 2300 Kmph, its the fastest bomber in the world. Designed to outrun the enemy interceptors, it was conceived as 'carrier killer' with a task to hunt down american aircraft carrier battle groups in Mediterranean and Atlantic, But with implementation of Strategic arms limitations treaty, the aerial refueling probe had to be removed in order to limit the range of the aircraft. While some aircraft were scrapped as per treaty.
