Tendulkar shines in India run-fest
(UKPA) – 53 minutes ago
A record-breaking double century from Sachin Tendulkar left South Africa facing a daunting run-chase in the second one-day international against India in Gwalior.
Tendulkar cracked an unbeaten 200, the highest individual ODI score ever by a batsman, and was involved in solid partnerships with Dinesh Karthik (79), Yusuf Pathan (36) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (67 not out) as India put South Africa's attack to the sword.
The home side finished with a massive 401 for three, leaving the visitors with a sizeable task in a match they must win to square the series.
Dhoni won the toss, but South Africa struck early when Wayne Parnell sent Virender Sehwag back for nine, caught at third man.
Tendulkar began his innings with boundaries on either side of the wicket off Parnell and thereafter hammered the bowlers around the park with a dazzling array of cuts, pulls and drives. He reached his 50 off only 37 balls with his ninth boundary and struck five more en route to his 46th ODI century, which he raised off a mere 90 deliveries.
Karthik, who also began his innings with a couple of boundaries, played the supporting role nicely, eventually reaching only his fourth ODI half-century. The two put South Africa's attack to the sword until Parnell struck again, luring Karthik into a pull which the batsman mistimed and presented Herschelle Gibbs at mid-wicket with a straight-forward catch.
Pathan then joined Tendulkar and the two raised 81 for the third wicket off only 47 deliveries, the newcomer adding to the run-fest with four boundaries and two sixes before his stay was ended by left-arm spinner Roelof van de Merwe.
Tendulkar raised the highest individual score in one-day cricket, going past the previous mark of 194 jointly held by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar and Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry, by hitting Parnell for a couple of runs.
He reached the mark off only 140 deliveries, hitting 25 boundaries and three sixes along the way, before reaching his double century with a single off Charl Langeveldt in the final over.
Dhoni, dealing in boundaries and sixes, reached his half-century in only 29 deliveries as India finished with a flourish.
