Russia's deputy PM calls Madonna an 'ex-prostitute'

Madonna has come under attack ahead of a Russian concert after the country's deputy prime minister called her an ex-prostitute, "a former w ....", on Twitter.

During a packed Moscow concert earlier this week, the pop star called for the release the all-girl punk band Pussy Riot, on trial for performing a song asking the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Vladimir Putin Moscow's cathedral.

At her concert in Saint Petersburg on Thursday, she has promised to come out in support of the city's embattled gay community, with pink wristbands to be distributed at the concert.

Dmitry Rogozin, the Russian deputy prime minister is not amused and described Madonna as a former prostitute - but without spelling out the full epithet.

"Every former w.... seeks to lecture everyone on morality as she gets older. Especially during tours and gigs abroad," he tweeted.

"Either take off your cross, or put on your knickers," he added.

I don't think anybody gives a tuppence about Madonna. Where is she going to sue him from? Hague? ICJ?

I also find the assertion "Either take off your cross, or put on your knickers," rather logical, but then, that's just me.

Madonna is a singer - let and sings. It is not necessary it was to do political statements neither in Kyiv nor in Moscow. A west does not know our mentality and tries to tune under the template. To understand us it is necessary to know our proverbs. They by were prepared centuries.

Not for long. Even Russia will not be spared of the liberating influence of the ever-present global media from 24-hour MTV, to social networking sites... The "Pussy Riot" is just the start. Expect more tumultuous calls for more liberal society and government from younger urbanised Russians in the coming years. This is inevitable.

We had the Orange putsch of 2004. What did he result in? Absolutely the opposite, cast aside a country only on 5 years back, and even anymore.
