Russia ready to set up Mig Plant in India | Deccan Chronicle

New Delhi, May 13: A defence ministry delegation is expected to leave for Moscow shortly to finalise, arrangements for the purchase of Russian Mig Supersonic Jet Fighters for the Indian Air Force. Talks have been going on for the purpose between India and the Soviet Union for some time and India is now understood to be anxious to obtain fighter planes of comparable performance in view of the supply of F-104-g jets to Pakistan by USA.

The Government had explored possibilities of buying similar US British or French fighters, but the foreign exchange problems and the question of early delivery are understood to have come in the way. The advantages of the Migs — that they are much cheaper than comparable western supersonic jet fighters and that the Soviet Union is understood to be ready to set up a plant in India for the manufacture of Migs — are understood to have impressed India in favour of these planes.

wait a minute? Lockheed F-104 Starfighter has been retired by usa decades ago. bakistan may have few 104's but it does not post any threat to us. plus when did usa agreed to supply 104-g to bakistan? we are not going to buy mig-35 to why would mig setup plant in india?

is this is a bullshit news?

might just be put out by Russians after losing MRCA they may lose
their market in India? India has not bought a Russian missile since
Klubs 5-7 years ago. The whole market lost to Israel. Now if Rafele
is loved by IAF they probably fear losing sukhoi market especially with
the delay in PAK-FA to 2019 two years late. Pakistan is irrelevant in any of this.

Let's not blame the MIGS for everything they did make the Indian govt
upgrade with the crashes every year there were very few planes left.
No sir... I'm not at all undermining the importance of MIGs... but the article is posted under "DC 50 years ago" section... so I don't think its going to happen.

I hope you are right. MIGS have earned their bad reputation.
There are reasons why Mirages were used in Kargil instead of MIGs
which were only escorts.

Yes, the lack of support for the 29s in the 90s and late 80s has done its part.

However, before putting that stigma on MiG for the mig-21 crashes, first take into account;

When the Mig-21 first took off in IAF colours, it was flying alongside,

Dassault Ouragans
Dassault Mysteres
Hawker Hunters
Gnats and Ajeets
HF-24s
De Havilland Vampires
Canberras
Sukhoi-7s

Heck, the Mig-21 has even outlived aircraft, such as the Mig-23s and 25s which were inducted decades after the first Mig-21.

This is the 5th decade of the Mig-21 in IAF service, so to seek the same ruggedness and reliability from this machine as modern ones, is simply unfair.

The Mig-21 has served well, and served long!

Blame the Babus for forcing it to fight much past its age!

The Migs (I assume you mean 29s) and Mirages serve two very different roles, and they both were used during the Kargil war, in their specific roles.

The Mig-23s and 27s were not used as effectively because they are mainly low altitude bombers, and hence not able to do the job at such altitudes as the Mirage could do.

When it came to squaring up against the Pakistani F-16s, it were IAF's Mig-29s who kept them in their crosshairs and away from the border.

LF, read the page again. It says news from 50 years ago. Exactly 50 years ago on May 13 and indian delegation left for moscow. This is not current news.

The news is 50 years ago!

That is what Yusuf and others are saying!

Much ado over nothing is what is being implied!

I presume it was posted to remind people of what was the scene 50 year ago!

LOL... since when did the soviet union come back? If the Soviet Union came back, U.S would start shitting its pants uncontrollably, and so would china, & the rest of Europe for that matter & add in japan as well. The clue is right there that this is the nostalgia section of the paper and not current news. The comments before are priceless. This thread made my day, Arigatou!

looking back.. So much has happened since then, MiG-21s proved that the F-104G are nothing but junk in 1971 and went on to challenge F-4 Phantoms in Vietnam and Egypt. The U.S, after taking blows from the MiG-21, got impressed by the potential of light fighters, & put out a RFP for a light fighter which lead to the birth of the F-16.
