Va. man gets 12 years for aiding terrorists

Published April 13, 2012 | Associated Press

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – An electrician from northern Virginia who admitted producing an online propaganda video for a Pakistani terrorist organization has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

A federal judge in Alexandria imposed the sentence Friday for 24-year-old Jubair Ahmad of Woodbridge. Ahmad pleaded guilty to providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistani organization that was blamed for the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people.

Prosecutors sought a maximum term of 15 years. They said that in addition to producing the propaganda video, Ahmad also received military training from Lashkar and professed a wish to die as a martyr.

Ahmad's lawyers had asked for only a two-year term. They say he did not appreciate the criminality of helping Lashkar, a group that has widespread support in his native Pakistan.

Like everybody else. He arrived in 2007.
Ahmad was born in Sialkot, Pakistan.[3] According to an affidavit submitted to the court by FBI, Ahmad stated that while in Pakistan he attended a training camp run by LeT. A Permanent resident of U.S. he arrived in the U.S. In 2007.[2] According to the FBI in September 2010 Ahmad directly communicated with Talha Saeed who is the son of LeT chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, made a video glorifying jihad at his request and uploaded it on YouTube[4] Ahmad is the second LeT operative after David Headley to plead guilty in a U.S. court.[5]

why are they letting him out after 12 years?
Only the prosecutor knows the real answer, and the maximum sentence requested was 15 years, but my guess is the US government is satisfied to keep him out of circulation for those years he will be in prison. I guess early release for good behavior might be possible, certainly to be followed by deportation.
