Jurors have started hearing the case of a television executive from Pakistan charged with beheading his wife soon after she filed for divorce.
Opening statements in the second-degree murder trial of Muzzammil Hassan began on Tuesday in Erie County Court in Buffalo.
The 46-year-old Hassan is accused of stabbing and decapitating 37-year-old Aasiya Hassan in 2009 inside the studios of Bridges TV.
The Pakistan-born couple founded the station to counter negative images of Muslims after 9/11.
Hassan's lawyer has said he may use a battered spouse defence. But in divorce papers signed six days before she died, Aasiya Hassan says she was the one who was abused.
