1 Jul 2009, 1955 hrs IST, IANS

HYDERABAD: Two members of the Maoist group Praja Pratighatana were shot dead Wednesday in a forested area of Andhra Pradesh's Warangal district, police said.

A police team engaged in combing operations in the Bhupatipur forests came face to face with a group of Maoists. In the exchange of fire that ensued, two Maoists were killed while some others managed to escape, a police official said, adding that they suffered no casualties.

The slain Maoists have been identified as Pratighatana state secretary Sudhakar alias Ashok and armed squad commander Chandranna.

Describing the incident as a big blow to the outfit in north Telangana, Warangal District Superintendent of Police VC Sajannar said one SLR (self loading rifle), one 8 mm pistol and three kit bags were recovered from the scene.

Pratighatana, a splinter group of guerrillas, has some presence in the north Telangana districts of Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam. Maoist activity in the state is on the wane as Communist Party of India-Maoist, the most powerful Maoist group, has lost over 300 cadres, including several top leaders, in the last four years. Maoist violence in the state has claimed more than 6,000 lives during the last four decades.

Maoists abduct, release five businessmen

Correspondent

KORAPUT: Maoists abducted five businessmen of Alamanda village in Bandhugaon block of Koraput district on Tuesaday night and released them by 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to sources, about 40 Maoists, divided themselves into groups and entered at a time into the houses of P. Nandikeswar Rao, Oddi Mohan Rao, Judhistira Patro, Natraj, V. Santosh and former sarpanch of the panchayat, S. Sasibhusan Rao.

Later, the Maoists took all the businessmen to the nearby forest. However, before leaving the village, the Maoists assured the panicked family members that all the five would be returned safe. While the villagers and the family members were uncertain of the future of the abducted businessmen, they were relieved when their family heads returned home on Wednesday afternoon.

However, the entire episode of the abduction and release of the businessmen by the naxalites remained a mystery as none of the released ones was ready to speak to anyone in the village. This was probably for the first time in the entire naxal-affected Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon region that the Maoists had released anyone unhurt after taking them from their home. In most of the earlier occasions, the Maoists had either killed those taken by them or had released them after punishing, said the sources.

Causes concern

While the police and district administration were feeling relieved after restoring communication links to the affected zone by clearing roads to Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon on Tuesday, this incidence caused a serious concern among the officials.

Maoists extort Rs.300 cr annually in Chhattisgarh: Raman Singh

Raipur (IANS): Maoist rebels extort up to Rs.300 crore every year in Chhattisgarh from traders of forest products, transporters and iron ore mining firms, says Chief Minister Raman Singh.

"Maoists extort at least Rs.250-300 crore (Rs.2.5-3 billion) annually and their extortion business runs from the state's southern tip of Bastar to the northern Surguja district," Singh told IANS.

"They mainly extort money from traders of 'tendu' leaves, iron ore mining firms, small and big contractors and transporters," added the 57-year-old politician.

Tendu leaves, which are used to make bidis (leaf-rolled cigarettes), are one of the most important forest products of the Bastar region that has been considered the nervecentre of Maoist terrorism in India since the late 1980s.

The restive region spread across 40,000 sq km has deposits of about 20 percent of the country's total iron ore stocks and owners of the mines regularly face extortion demands from Maoists.

"The traders, businessmen, contractors and others who pay extortion money hardly have the courage to report it to the police because of the fear of Maoists and their own business interests in the region," said Singh.

Of the 1,500 casualties in Maoist violence since the state came into existence in November 2000 after splitting from Madhya Pradesh, 90 percent have been from Bastar.

"The Maoists also force people in the Surguja region to cough up money," added the chief minister.

The Surguja region is one of the most coal-rich areas of the country. It is home to several mines of the public sector Coal India Limited's (CIL) highest profit-making subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL).

Singh, who is serving a second consecutive term as chief minister, reiterated that Maoist militancy was not confined to Chhattisgarh and suggested that better coordination among states hit by the menace along with support from the centre might be effective in dismantling the rebels' terror infrastructure.

He praised the central government for having taking the "bold decision" June 22 to brand the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) a terrorist outfit.

"On the issue of taking on Maoists, there is no disagreement between the Chhattisgarh government and the centre. We both want to deal with it firmly and decisively," said the chief minister.

"The Chhattisgarh government is working on raising the strength of forces trained in jungle warfare besides modernising the police force to wipe out the Maoists," he added.

Maoists blow up Orissa forest office

Bhubaneswar, July 10: Maoists blew up a forest office and one person was injured in the blast at Gajapati district in Orissa where the ultras have given a state-wide bandh call on Friday.

A large number of armed Maoists, including women, struck the forest beat office in Paniganda in Adaba area of Gajapati district, about 300 km from here in early hours and dragged out the guard, Inspector-in-Charge of Adaba police station N Kero said.

They blew up the building using powerful explosives after tying the forest guard, he said adding a villager who arrived at the spot out of curiosity after hearing the noise sustained minor injuries.

The incident took place even as a state-wide bandh was observed in protest against ban on CPI (Maoist) and to demand that the arrested Maoists lodged in various jails be treated as political prisoners.

They also alleged that many people had been arrested on false charges and demanded their release. The ultras pasted posters in support of their demands in rural areas of Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts, sources said.

Security has been tightened in Naxal-hit districts in southern and western parts to prevent untoward incident.

The bandh had little impact in urban centres and evoked mixed response in rural areas amid closure of shops and thin traffic.
