BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh finance minister Jayant Malaiya and his wife Sudha were robbed at gunpoint onboard the Delhi bound Jabalpur-Nizamuddin Express near Mathura on Thursday, bringing the focus back to India's poor safety record.
The couple had boarded the train at Damoh railway station.
The railways, meanwhile, has ordered an inquiry into the incident and has also suspended the three RPF personnel who were escorting the train.
" Three RPF personnel who were escorting the train have been suspended in connection with the incident," Anil Saxena, railway spokesperson told media persons.
Soon after reaching the Capital, the couple met Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and narrated their ordeal. The matter was also raised in Parliament by Prahlad Patel, BJP MP from Damoh. The Delhi Police has also filed a zero FIR and are investigating the matter.
Talking to the media outside the Parliament, Sudha said, "There was a knock at the door of our coupe at around 4 am. When I opened the door a person armed with a dagger entered forcefully followed by four others."
According to her, while the others stood near the door and kept an eye on the passage, two of them entered the coupe and stole cash and other valuables.
"They snatched my purse, chain and ring. They also took away money from my husband's purse," she said.
According to a senior railway personnel, surveillance photos revealed that each robber had wore a dark coloured sweatshirt.
Early this month, two BJP MPs Janardhan Mishra (Rewa parliamentary seat ) and Riti Pathak (Sidhi parliamentary seat) of the state who were returning after attending the NDA Goverment's Railway Budget from Delhi lost their belongings in the AC coach of Sampark Kranti Express while they were asleep.
Similarly, in one another case, nearly three months back, another MP Nandkumar Singh Chouhan, representing Khandwa Parliamentary seat in MP and State BJP chief were robbed between Mathura and Nizamuddin Railway Station.
