Hi my friends,

I wish to take the occasion (of this thread) to seek your advice on Indian Railway as a tourist.

1) Is October the busy season for travelling by train? I mean for those hot spots like Khajuraho, Varanasi, Agra and Rajasthan?

2) Is it then possible to book train tickets of AC classes on the same day, like 2 hours prior to departure for above mentioned destinations (for flexible schedule), on site rather than on line? Or one day earlier?

3) What's weather like in Oct. in N. India? It's said the best season would be Nov.- Mar. . What's the ground reality in the north?

Thanks

October could be termed as fall winter for N India. As far as Khajuraho is concerned, it is busy 365 days of the year as its in central India rather then North India and temperature during October would be moderate.

There is premium tatkal available for same day travel for selected trains, but its costly then regular or tatkal. So for any train travel in India, its advisable to stick around with a proper and planned itinerary.

There is actually a quota for foreign tourists.

However am not sure how easy those tickets are. Better check on tripadvisor or something like that.

As far as my experience goes AC is always booked and very rarely available on any train in last few days before travel.

You better book as early as you can, I understand you want a flexible schedule, in that case start looking at flights.

@amoy If you are landing in Delhi then book a flight for Khajuraho. Railway connectivity to Khajuraho is not particularly good.

New swanky Indian Railways trains, Hyperloop and rapid metros: Transport systems changing the face of India

Travelling from one place to the other within India – be it on the Indian Railwaysnetwork or intra-city and intra-state commute – is witnessing a tremendous change. For one, the Indian Railways network that transports lakhs of people everyday is looking to introduce new modern trains and technology in the next few years. Sample this; as early as next month Indian Railways will roll out its first semi-high speed engine-less train for inter-city travel! For another, high-speed rapid travel, both in metro networks and emerging technologies like Hyperloop is set to take off in India. Last-mile and quick connectivity is in focus and some of the transport systems that will be introduced in the near future will completely change the way India travels. From bullet train and self-propelled Indian Railways trains to game changing technologies such as Hyperloop, we take a look at new transport systems that are changing the face of India:

1. Bullet train:
India is building its first bullet train network with the help of Japan between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The ambitious bullet train project is expected to be fully operational by 2023. Once ready, commuters will be able to travel between Ahmedabad and Mumbai in just 2 hours! India will get Japan’s E5 Shinkansen series of bullet trains which can travel at maximum speeds of up to 350 kmph! Indian Railways first bullet train project will cover 12 stations; Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

Work on the project is progressing in full swing and officials are hopeful that land inquisition will be complete by end of 2018. The ‘Make in India’ project not only involves procuring bullet trains from Japan but also assembling and finally manufacturing them in the country. The first bullet train project marks a new learning phase for Indian Railways and with technology transfer forming part part of the initiative, future high-speed rail corridors will benefit immensely. Not only will Japan’s bullet trains ensure faster travel but they are also one of the safest and most punctual in the world. NHSRCL (National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited), the executing body of the bullet train project, has said that the fares of bullet train will be in line with AC train travel and less than airfares.

2. Semi-high speed engine-less trains:
Even as India waits for its first bullet train ride, Indian Railways is already working on a new semi-high speed technology that will replace Shatabdi and Rajdhani Express trains on the network. Codenamed Train 18 and Train 20, after the years they will be manufactured in, these train sets will be similar to metro trains, running on self-propulsion systems and hence eliminating need for a locomotive to haul them. While Train 18 will replace Shatabdi Express chair cars, Train 20 will be the modern substitutes for Rajdhani Express sleeper trains.

Train 18 is being manufactured under the ‘Make in India’ initiative at Integral Coach Factory, Chennai and is expected to roll out by September-end. Train 18, which will be capable of travelling at speeds of 160 kmph, will replace India’s fastest Shatabdi on the Delhi-Bhopal route from January 2019 after rigorous testing by RDSO. The air-conditioned chair car will have several features such as automatic doors with sliding footsteps, disabled-friendly modular toilets, swanky mini pantry in each coach, comfortable European-style seats, WiFi and GPS-based information systems, fully sealed gangways and diffused LED lighting.

Train 20, on the other hand, is a project still in works. Indian Railways will float a fresh tender for the project, inviting global railway giants to collaborate with Indian companies to manufacture world-class aluminium body train sets in India.

3. Rapid metro and metrino pods:
Several high-speed rapid metro rail networks are being planned for Delhi-NCR which will reduce the travel time between crucial cities drastically. Some of these are; Delhi-Panipat Rapid Rail, Delhi to Meerut high-speed luxury trains and Delhi to Alwar rapid transit network. The executing agency for this project is National Capital Region Transport Corporation. These Regional Rapid Transit Systems will make for easier and more comfortable inter-city travel.

Not only that, Modi government is also looking to introduce a new driverless public transport system – Metrinos – between Delhi and Gurgaon to ease traffic congestion on roads and also provide a more environment friendly green mode of transport. Metrino pods are small driverless, fully automatic vehicles that travel under an overhead network. A pilot project from Gurgaon-Delhi border to Badshapur Mod on Sohna Road is being planned.

4. Hyperloop:
India may very well be one of the first few countries in the world to get a Hyperloop network that allows one to travel at over 1000 kmph speed with the help of magnetic levitation. Two ventures, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies and Virgin Hyperloop One are separately pursuing projects in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra respectively for connectivity between Anantapura-Amaravati-Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam and Mumbai-Pune. Post feasibility studies, both the companies will build test tracks in these states before the projects get a final nod. Said to be faster than aircraft, Hyperloop will world-over be a game-changing system for transportation and India taking a lead in its implementation is a welcome step.

Habibganj to become Indian Railways’ first station to be redeveloped on the lines of Germany’s Heidelberg

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal Friday expressed satisfaction at the pace of work of redeveloping Habibganj railway station here. It is being reconstructed on the lines of Germany’s Heidelberg railway station by the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation, a special purpose vehicle of the railway ministry, along with a private firm, Bansal Pathways Habibganj Private Ltd. “I am satisfied with the pace of works, especially the two subways that have come up, to turn Habibganj station into a model one for the country. The redeveloped station will come up soon,” Goyal told reporters while inspecting the station. “Minister Piyush Goyal expressed satisfaction over the works. He said that all the stations in the country will be developed,” West Central Railway (WCR) Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Priyanka Dixit told PTI. She said that the railways plan to develop 400 stations into world class ones.

The private firm has started running certain aspects, like upkeep and maintenance, of the station, though train operations continue to be with the railways, the CPRO informed. The firm won the bid to redevelop and maintain the station, originally commissioned in 1979, in 2016, Dixit said.

The company’s station development construction manager Mohammad Abu Asif said that the firm was now looking after parking, catering, cleaning including track washing, maintenance, housekeeping among other operations. “Since March 2016, we are redeveloping Habibganj station into a world class facility on the lines of Germany’s Heidelberg railway station. The IRSDC is the nodal agency of the project,” Asif said. He informed that the project is being carried out in two phases, of which the part dealing with station redevelopment will cost Rs 100 crore.

The station redevelopment phase has a deadline of July 2019 but the plan is to complete it earlier, Asif said. “The station development is primarily aimed at segregating the movement of people inside the premises with the creation of departure and arrival lounges. Passenger entry and exit routes will be segregated with the construction of two subways and a new station building on the west side among other works,” he said.

The second phase deals with commercial development of the station area at an estimated cost of Rs 347 crore, Asif added. This phase will see Habibganj station get a trade centre, an anchor store, service apartment, hospital, budget and luxury hotels and a convention centre which will be built over a 13 lakh square feet area, he said, adding that the land had been leased to the firm for 45 years.

“The Bansal group has been given eight years to complete the commercial development of the station. Profit from the commercial facilities will form return on investment,” Asif explained. Asif said IRSDC also planned to redevelop Chandigarh, Delhi’s Bijwasan and Anand Vihar, as well as Maharashtra’s Shivajinagar (in Pune) on similar lines apart from 23 more stations.

The station redevelopment programme was initiated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she was railway minister. Some initial studies were carried out in 2010. However, it got revived in 2015 when Suresh Prabhu was railway minister. Railways own about 4.76 lakh hectares of land and is the country’s second bigger land-owner after the Defence ministry.

Southern Railway becomes unmanned level crossing free zone

The Southern Railway Saturday said it has become "Unmanned Level Crossing (UMLC) Free Zone," by implementing a 2010 policy decision, eliminating over 1,000 such level crossings.

"In Southern Railway, Palakkad, Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai Divisions became UMLC free during the first quarter of the current year," it said in a release.

As on September 1, 2017, there were 311 UMLCs on the Southern Railway system which were targeted to be eliminated by this September as per Railway Minister Piyush Goyal's directives, it said.

"Accordingly, as on September 30, 2018, Southern Railway has eliminated all the remaining 311 UMLCs. With this, all the Unmanned Level Crossings in the zone have been totally eliminated thus enhancing safety," it said.

It recalled that the Railway Board had formulated a policy in 2010 to eliminate all such level crossings "from the system to prevent accidents" as were a 'safety hazard' for both Rail and Road users.

Accordingly, the elimination of all 1054 UMLCs were planned by offering alternate modes of crossing the track by provision of subways, diversion to adjacent manned level crossings, subways, road under bridges and outright closure due to low road traffic, it added.

Southern Railway launches India’s first RoadRailer train
The train on its maiden run carried electrical and electronic goods from Melpakkam goodshed near Arakkonam to Pulwal in Haryana, a distance of 2,200 km.

CHENNAI: With spiralling fuel prices and high cost of goods transportation, Southern Railway on Tuesday launched commercial operation of India’s first RoadRailer train, a bimodal vehicle which will run as semi-trailer truck on road and as a wagon on rail.

The train on its maiden run carried electrical and electronic goods from Melpakkam goodshed near Arakkonam to Pulwal in Haryana, a distance of 2,200 km. It carried goods in 18 wagons. Thirty-two wagons ran empty. The Railways earned Rs16.88 lakh.

The technologically-upgraded transport system is expected to shift cargo from road to rail. The RoadRailer train will transport the goods to the doorstep of companies passing along rail tracks and roads and reduce the transportation cost, said railway officials.

The bimodal transport vehicle will replace 50 to 55 trucks from the road, reducing the external costs, including loading and unloading of goods, besides providing safety for the goods during transportation, said a senior railway official.

Each RoadRailer unit has eight truck wheels and coupled together with the help of adapter bogies. Each coupling bogie have got four rail wheels. At the goods terminal, the RoadRailer Units will be delinked with the rail adapter bogies and will be taken to destination after putting behind the prime mover.

Southern Railway recorded freight earnings of `2,739 crore between April 2017 and March 2018. The Railways is planning to increase freight earnings by six to eight per cent this year.

Hitherto, freight loading was done by transporting commodities including coal, raw materials for steel plants, iron and steel, iron ore, cement and gypsum. “However, the RoadRailer is designed to carry automobile components, electrical and electronic goods, furniture and hardware,” added railway officials.
A railway official said the carrying capacity of each wagon (also known as RRU) is about 30 tonnes and up to 50 wagons can be operated per trip.

In 2011, Kirloskar Pneumatic Co Ltd had entered into an agreement with Indian Railways to operate RoadRailer. It manufactured 100 RoadRailer Units and 20 rail bogie adapters.

Though the project started in 2015, it faced inordinate delay due to the ambiguity in finalising under which category the semi trailer is to be registered with State transport department. In August 2017, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (1989) to enable all trailers and semi trailer vehicles to be registered independently. Subsequently, the State granted a permission to operate the bimodal vehicle
New technology

  • Each RoadRailer Unit (RRU) has eight truck wheels on tandem axle and four rail wheels
  • Semi-trailers are coupled together using rail adapter bogies to create RoadRailer Unit
  • Two rakes of RoadRailer Units each comprising 50 wagons have been manufactured
  • Two rakes to be operated between Melpakkam near Arakkonam and Pulwal in Haryana
  • On reaching the terminal, the bogies will be de-coupled from the RRU’s and the body will be linked with truck
  • The bimodal vehicle cleared for operation up to 100 km per hour
  • Maximum number of coaches permitted is 50 per trip and length of the train should be 632.5 metres
  • RRU train would replace 50 trucks on the road
  • RRU will be used for transporting automobiles and components, electrical and electronic goods
  • The project started in 2015, but it faced inordinate delay due to ambiguity on registration

Weird AF
Does this not add unnecessary weight of bogie for road travel???

Edit: Or maybe the bogies are left behind with that orange underframe, but then do they use a crane to mount/dismount the road trailer/container? Wouldn't a RO-RO (roll-on roll-off) service be better?

Yes. Its written in the article above that bogies are decoupled from the roadrailer unit and linked with truck.
