Kalyani Rafael JV receives $100 million missiles contract


Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems Ltd, a joint venture between Israel-based Rafael Advanced Systems and Pune's Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd, has won a $100 million missiles order fro the Indian Army and the Air Force, the company said in a news release.

Bharat Forge owns a 51 percent stake in Kalyani Strategic Systems.

As part of the contract, Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems will manufacture 1,000 BARAK-8 MRSAM missiles' kits for the Indian defence forces.

The company said, "Keeping with its commitment to ‘Make-in-India’, the JV partners have invested in best in class production facilities, state of the art engineering services, and extended Life cycle support (MRO) for systems supplied to Indian Defence force."

KRAS plans to ramp up its employee strength to 300 by the year 2023 to meet this order, according to the news release.

Kalyani Rafael eyes 2nd missile unit in Telangana


Hyderabad: Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems Ltd (KRAS), a 51:49 joint venture between Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd and Rafael Advanced Systems, is eyeing a second missile production facility in Telangana for which it has sought land from the Telangana government, Kalyani group chairman Baba Kalyani said here on Thursday.

KRAS, which commissioned a Rs 70 crore anti-tank guided missile production facility in Telangana near the international airport at Shamshabad in July 2018, is in talks with the Telangana government for acquiring 100 acres for its second missile facility, Kalyani said while announcing the $100 million order that KRAS has bagged from Israeli defence equipment maker Rafael for supplying 1,000 Barak-8 medium range surface to air missiles (MRSAM) kits to Bharat Dynamic Ltd (BDL) for the Indian army and air force.

“We are looking at the second facility here to create more local manufacturing, indigenisation and integration of defence products. It cannot happen in the place we have now where the cold is being done. We need to have a second unit where hot integration processes can take place, which is why we're talking to the Telangana government for about 100 acres of land,” Kalyani said, pointing out that every weapon system has a hot portion attached to it.

Kalyani, however, did not divulge the investment made by KRAS so far or the projected investment for the proposed second facility in Telangana.
KRAS is also looking to ramp up its headcount to about 300 technical experts by 2023 from the existing 80-odd and hopes to begin delivery of the Barak missile kits to BDL from the fourth quarter of the current fiscal, said Rajinder Singh Bhatia, president and CEO of defence & aerospace at Kalyani Group. Indicating that the delivery schedule for the 1,000 Barak missile kits would be spread over four years, Bhatia said KRAS has already notched exports of around $15 million in FY19 and hopes to step this up to $20 million by next fiscal.

Rafael group, which has invested over $250 million in India through various `Make in India’ initiatives over the past two decades, sees the Barak-8 order as just the opening of the door for big contracts to the Indian armed forces and “looks forward to crossing many more milestones with KRAS as well as other partners like BDL within India,” Rafael’s executive vice-president and general manager of air and missile defence systems division Pini Yungman said, adding that all the orders for the Indian armed forces will be delivered by KRAS.

JSR Dynamics to manufacture defence equipment in Mihan


Nagpur: State government’s aim of making Mihan a defence and aerospace hub has got another shot in the arm with Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), headed by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, allotting 27 acre land to a city-based startup in the special economic zone (SEZ).

JSR Dynamics, a company floated by air marshal (retd) SB Deo, plans to manufacture glide bombs, range extension kits, cruise missiles and loitering munitions. The company has promised to start construction immediately after allotment of land. It will generate 100 direct jobs in the beginning. Last month, JSR Dynamics had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Economic Explosives Ltd, a subsidiary of Nagpur-based Solar Group, for warheads, glide weapons and lightweight cruise missiles.

Deo told TOI that his company also plans to manufacture unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and helicopters in association with Bengaluru-based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). “India is too much dependent on foreign companies for meeting its defence requirements. There is need to indigenize defence equipment production. We plan to do this,” he said. JSR had signed an MoU with BEL in February this year. He however, refused to reveal as to how he would fund his mega-venture.

If JSR’s plans take off then it will become the second major unit in Mihan. Dassault Reliance Aerospace Limited (DRAL) is already manufacturing cockpits of Dassault’s business jet Falcon 2000. It has plans to manufacture the entire aircraft at Mihan.

MADC is also holding talks with two aircraft manufacturing companies. So far, two to three rounds of talks have been held and the companies have showed a positive response. More rounds of talks would be held in the coming days. The final deal will, however, take some time to materialize.
The company is also expected to allot land to six players near the DRAL unit. These will be part of Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park (DAAP). DRAL is a part of DAAP, which has been given co-developer status in Mihan.


The decision to allot land to JSR was taken in MADC’s board meeting held on Wednesday. The progress on development of airports at Chandrapur, Amravati, Solapur, Purandar etc was also reviewed by Fadnavis, who is ex-officio chairman of the company.

Suresh Kakani, vice-chairman-cum-managing director of MADC, and principal secretaries of several departments and heads of various government agencies were present in the meeting.

Like the name suggests a pseudo satellite indeed. It looks solar powered hence probably will glide in atmosphere over the entire subcontinent way above shooting capabilities of Pakistan ?

Will function like a satellite probably so many applications SAR mapping , communication , guiding precision weapons , ICBMs , beaming internet for forces on the move?

Kalyani Rafael bags $100 million missile kit order

HYDERABAD: Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS), a joint venture between Kalyani Group and Israeli defence equipment giant Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, announced that it has received its first major order worth $100 million from overseas partner Rafael to make Barak 8 missile kits.

The order is to produce 1,000 units of Barak 8 MR-SAM missile kits over the next four years to be supplied to India’s state-run defence manufacturer Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) for further integration.

Addressing the media in Hyderabad on Thursday, Kalyani Group chairman Baba Kalyani said the first Indian private defence sector firm to receive one of the largest foreign direct investments was also looking at expanding facilities in Hyderabad.

He said that KRAS is currently in talks with the Telangana government for setting up a second facility in Hyderabad over around 100 acres for integration and indigenisation. The joint venture already has a anti-tank guided missile production facility in the city.

“As we keep expanding our production, we will expand our capabilities, facilities, talent pool that we have, which will happen as we move forward,” he said.

Termed the development as a testimony to the capabilities that now exist within the Indian private defence sector, Kalyani said, “Going forward, in line with the government of India’s commitment to promote defence exports from India, Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems shall be actively engaged in taking the manufacturing and supply of some of the most advanced systems from Rafael’s portfolio to friendly nations from here in Hyderabad/India.”

The chairman said the joint venture would also look at directly bidding for domestic defence orders on achieving further maturity with the help of Rafael. “We also plan to leverage the engineering expertise of the existing KRAS team towards integration of weapons on platforms, for example, the Derby Mark III, a beyond-visualrange air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) on India’s light combat aircraft (LCA) and the long range guided bomb (LRGB) Make II programs on various aircrafts,” he said.

The joint venture has already started offering the product life cycle support services for LLQRM (low-level quick reaction missile) systems to the Indian Air Force, he said.

Brigadier General (retired) Pini Yungman, Rafael’s executive vicepresident and general manager of the air and missile defence systems division, said the joint venture has invested in top-notch production facilities with state-of-the-art technologies from Rafael. “We want to see KRAS delivering the systems to the Air Force, Navy, and Army,” he said, adding that KRAS is aiming to emerge as a private missile hub in the region and set up services and support centres near the deployments.

Col Rajinder Bhatia, CEO of Bharat Forge Defence and Aerospace, part of Kalyani Group, said production of missile kits will begin sometime from fourth quarter of this year to deliver the orders in three-and-a-half-years.

The two-year-old Indo-Israeli joint venture has supplied certain critical components for the missiles used in the airstrikes earlier this year by the Indian Army, said Bhatia, indirectly referring to the surgical strikes carried out by the Army in February at Balakot. He added that the joint venture has already started exporting components to certain friendly nations and had exported components worth around $15 million last year.

KRAS will look at exporting over $20 million of sub-systems from this year, he said.

In its largest ever export order, OFB to supply 50,000 Bofors shells to UAE

NEW DELHI: In its largest ever export order, the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) will supply 50,000 artillery shells used with the Bofors guns to the United Arab Emirates(UAE). A contract worth Rs 315 crore ($45.75 million) contract was signed last month, adding to an earlier order for 40,000 shells that finalized in 2017.

The contract has been described by the defence ministry as the `largest ever single export order’ to the state owned OFB that manufactures a bulk of the ammunition in used by the Indian armed forces. In particular, the OFB will supply 50,000 numbers each of the 155 mm HE ERFB BT Shell and Primer M19l-A2 to UAE.

The order comes as a boost to Indian plans to promote defence exports, with a target to reach Rs 35,000 crore annually by 2025. Among other nations, UAE has been identified as a key partner to promote arms exports as the Rajnath Singh led defence ministry has unveiled a series of policy initiatives that range from easing norms to get export licences to financially empowering defence attaches across the world to promote Indian military equipment.

The OFB order comes two years after it signed a deal with UAE to supply it with 40,000 units of the artillery shells. The repeat order, with an increased number, is considered to be an endorsement of the quality and delivery schedule followed by OFB.

As reported by ET, Indian defence exports have zoomed to almost Rs 11000 crore - more than twice from a year ago - on the back of recent policy liberalization. The hike in defence exports – from Rs 4682 crore in 2017-18 to 10745 in 2018-19 – will likely grown faster with a plan for a new general export license to enable Indian companies to export certain equipment to identified nations without restrictions.

Latest government data shows that in the current financial year, exports worth Rs 3323 crore have already been processed, with a bulk of these being by the private sector. Of the Rs 11,000 crore odd worth of exports last financial year, the private sector contributed to over Rs 9812 crores, according the data.

The government plan is to give the defence sector a $ 25 billion pie in the $ 1 trillion Indian manufacturing economy that is targeted for 2025. Out of this, defence exports by Indian companies is targeted at $ 5 Billion.

As reported by ET, the government has drawn up a list of 85 nations that it wants to promote its defence industry. Defence attaches are being given an annual budget of up to $ 50,000 each for promoting exports of Indian made defence products from both the public and private sector by participating in exhibitions, conducting market studies, organizing seminars and distribution of publicity material.

The nations that India believes have the maximum potential of purchasing military equipment include Vietnam, Thailand, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE and Malaysia. Even western nations with a developed defence industry like UK and USA are on the list due to the increasing ecosystem of sub system manufacturers in India that have access to technology thanks to defence offsets programs of the past.

The project would generate 4,000 jobs and solidify the state's position in the aerospace industry, it said.

The approval is to establish a unit for manufacturing aircraft evacuation systems, lighting systems, cargo systems, seating systems and electrical power systems, an official press release said here.

The state government has approved allotment of over 25 acres at aerospace SEZ in hi-tech, defence and aerospace park for the project along with the supply of 400 KVA of power from Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (BESCOM).

Also, 3 lakh LPD (litres per day) of water from Karnataka IndustrialArea Development Board (KIADB) and incentives and concessions as per the aerospace policy of the state would be provided, among others, the release said.

According to the industries department, the planned expansion atDevanahalli, Bangalore rural district, offers a key advantage of positioning Karnataka on the global network and further enhance the state's ecosystem in the aerospace and defence sector.

Additionally, this expansion would employ another 4,000 people and benefit the aerospace community.

Goodrich Aerospace Service Pvt Ltd, a multinational company, has been engaged in assembling/manufacturing aircraft evacuation systems, lighting systems, cargo systems, seating systems and electrical power systems since 1996 in India.

It has three establishments in three locations at Whitefield, Bengaluru, employing over 3,000 people.

Tata Mahindra already build frame / fuselage for different aircrafts of boing airbus etc. Now with these internal components we have almost full ecosystem to start assembling whole airplane in India itself.

In 4-5 years we will probably start building whole aircrafts for boing / airbus etc .

It also paves way for us to build our own transport vehicle as subsystems can be sourced domestically.

Pune-based Maxlink in a joint venture with South African firm to make microlight aircraft


The two-seater Bat Hawk light aircraft runs on a Rotax engine that can be run on petrol (16 litre per hour) and has six hour flying capability.

It is expected to cost around `45 lakh. The South African company has so far manufactured 500 units if this light aircraft.
South African company Micro Aviation and Pune-based Maxlink India have entered into a technical collaboration to manufacture the Bat Hawk microlight aircraft in India. Micro Aviation will be licensing the technology to Maxlink for manufacturing.

Maxlink director Vijay Sethi said the microlight segment was an ignored category though it was suitable and affordable for a variety applications in a country like India. He said microlights were popular with hobbyists but apart from adventure sport these were capable of handling serious applications like surveillance by defence, police, coastguard and forest guards, vegetation mapping, farm spraying and disaster relief. “It is capable of performing like a helicopter at fraction of the cost,”


Sethi said, adding that earlier there were restrictions on such aircraft but the Indian government has now become more flexible and opened up the microlight aircraft segment.

We are awaiting approval from the DGCA and hope to start aircraft assembly operations by December 2019 with a facility around Pune, Sethi said. His company has set a target of manufacturing 200 aircraft in three years.
Maxlink Group of companies is a diversified group of companies with interests in government contracts, defence, highways and retail. Mixing Adventure Sports Pvt Ltd currently has a dealership of Australian microlight aircraft company to sell their aircraft in India.

Despite better judgement, India's ordnance factories went on a month-long strike today, responding to a call for the same by the three 'recognized' Defence Federations. The strike is being observed to oppose New Delhi's move to corporatize @OFB_India

This @OFB_India strike will embolden the Pakistanis. It is absolutely ill-advised at this juncture. The import lobby is celebrating, of course. The weekly requirement of 155 mm rounds will now have to be imported.
