Coast Guard Stations

Coast Guard stations at a particular place are set up after taking into account the threat perception, vulnerability gap analysis and presence of other stations in the vicinity, There are seven Coast Guard stations in Gujarat located at Gandhinagar, Porbandar, Okha, Jakhau, Vadinar, Mundra and Veraval. There is an Air Enclave at Porbandar.

Government has also accorded approval for` setting up a Coast Guard station at Pipavav in Gujarat.

A Regional Headquarters (North West) at Gandhinagar has also been established in Gujarat to monitor coastal security for Gujarat. There are naval stations at Okha, Jamnagar and Porbandar. Further, under centrally sponsored Coastal Security Scheme Phase I, ten coastal police stations have been established and twelve additional coastal police stations have been sanctioned under Phase II of the scheme including in South Gujarat. The Indian Coast Guard have been conducting security operations and exercises off the Gujarat Coast as also awareness campaigns in fishing villages in Gujarat on a regular basis. Joint patrol with Navy, Marine police, customs and other stakeholders are being undertaken regularly. Seven radar stations have been approved on Gujarat coast including in South Gujarat.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in written reply to Shri Ramsinh Rathwa in Lok Sabha today.

Iran ship has machine guns, India protests


New Delhi India has lodged a strong protest with Iran after the Navy confirmed that its vessel off Lakshadweep is armed with heavy machine guns. The ship, MV Assa, has been anchored there for over a month, without any proper explanation to Indian authorities, as first reported by The Indian Express.The Iranian ambassador to India, sources said, was summoned to South Block last week and told that the ship should be moved from its current location because India faces grave terrorist threats from the sea and an armed ship in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for such a long time is a security threat.


Iran's "technical" defence is that India cannot object to a ship in its EEZ. India's territorial waters end at 12 nautical miles, beyond which lies the EEZ up to 200 nautical miles. While India has full rights over resources in its EEZ, the water is free for navigational purposes. The Iranian side, sources said, argued that the ship is armed to counter the pirate threat. New Delhi says that the area is clear of pirates.


Another concern for India is that it is clueless about the several boats that regularly visit M V Assa, drop cargo and return. There is also conflicting information from the ship. After a long silence, it said it was headed to Singapore but later, the crew claimed they were going to Colombo, then China. Yet, the ship has not moved.



Incidentally, a ship by the name of Assa is listed as property of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), sanctioned by the US Treasury Department in 2010. Rules from the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) do empower a country with certain security-related responsibilities within its EEZ. However, India cannot invoke these since Iran is not a signatory to UNCLOS.

Radar systems to augment surveillance along coast

KOCHI: Kerala will very soon have fast interceptor crafts (FICs) patrolling its seas and a chain of radar systems scrutinizing its coastal belt for intruder presence. Vice Admiral KN Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, said on Tuesday that the initiative was part of an all-round enhancement on the security front. The 12 FICs that Kerala gets would strengthen the anti-pirate and anti-terrorists patrol operations along its coast, he added.

I looked this up for my own information about the mission of India's Coast Guard:

The Indian Coast Guard's motto, in keeping with its missions, is वयम रक्षामः (Vayam Rakshamah), which translates from Sanskrit as We Protect. Its missions are:[3]

Protection of maritime resources
Maritime safety, search and rescue
Law enforcement in territorial as well as international waters
Protection of marine ecology and environment
Scientific data collection and support
Maritime defence support

This change of jurisdiction is only for better administration," he said. Sharma added a large number of Myanmarese fishermen were apprehended by Coast Guard's Andaman and Nicobar Region for fishing sea cucumbers, which is prohibited under the Wildlife Act. The Indian Coast Guard would have a joint exercise with Japan between January 26 and 31 next year, he said. The Chennai Port Trust was undergoing a study to extend Coast Guard's jetty in Chennai, he added.

Chennai, Dec 9 (PTI) Tamil Nadu will soon become the first state in the country to have three Coast Guard air stations, a senior Coast Guard official today said. "The Coast Guard is planning to build two Coast Guard stations in Tuticorin and Puducherry, in addition to the existing station in Chennai. Once we set up air stations in Tuticorin and Puducherry, Tamil Nadu will be the first state in the country to have three Coast Guard air stations," Inspector General Satya Prakash Sharma, Regional Commander, Coast Guard Region (East) told reporters here. Sharma spoke to the media after delivering the inaugural address on 'National Objectives - Strategic Imperatives in the Far East' at the Seafarer's Club here. The Coast Guard has placed orders for 12 aircrafts with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, he said. The government of Tamil Nadu has provided 50 acres of land adjacent to the Tuticorin airport for building an air station, while negotiations are in the final stages with the government of Puducherry, he said. "As of now, the Coast Guard is using INS Parundu - the naval air station near Ramanathapuram for emergency". Though the Coast Guard will be decommissioning six ships from its Eastern fleet - ICGS Avvaiyar, ICGS Habba Khatun (by December end of early January 2012), ICGS Rani Jindan, ICGS Vikram, ICGS Chandbibi and ICGS Ramadevi, it would have a full fleet by December 2012, he said. "Temporarily, the strength (of ships) will come down from 28 to 22 but then we will have a full fleet by December 2012 as every three months ships will be rolling out."

Port Blair, December 21, 2011

Indian Coast Guard Ship Bhikhaji Cama today rescued 85 marooned survivors - 37 Myanmarese and 48 Bangladeshis - from Barren Island, where India's lone active volcano is located.

According to Coast Guard sources, RV Samudra Manthan (Research Vessel) operating in the area had intimated Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (PB) regarding sighting of approximately 90 survivors stranded on Barren Island.

"On receipt of information, Indian Coast Guard Ship Bhikhaji Cama was immediately tasked for rescue of the stranded personnel. Coast Guard Dornier aircraft was also launched for sea-air coordinated search and rescue," Assistant Commandant Poornima Arora, Andaman and Nicobar Coast Guard Region told UNI today.

Meanwhile, the Andaman Nicobar Command Headquarters, diverted INS Bangaram from Mayabunder to augment the efforts.

"The Dornier aircraft carried out intensive surveillance in the area yesterday and reported sighting of lights on the island and relayed the message to the Coast Guard ship which was fast approaching to rescue the stranded survivors," he said.

According to Coast Guard, the Myanmarese and Bangladeshi nationals were observed to be in a dehydrated condition. They were administered first aid by the ship's staff.

"The preliminary inputs from survivors revealed that they had started from Bangladesh on December 10 for Malaysia in search of better employment opportunities," Assistant Commandant Arora added.

However, one boat sank on December 17 and five personnel drowned while the survivors embarked on the other boat.

'Major expansion of Indian coast guard underway'

CHENNAI (PTI): Indian is in the process of activating four new stations and two besides inducting over 12 ships and 10 aircraft in its force in the immediate future as part of a major expansion and modernisation drive, an official has said.

"The capacity building projects of and Marine Police are under full swing. We are in the process of activating four new stations, two new air stations besides inducting more than 20 ships and 10 aircraft in the immediate future," Coast Guard Regional Commander (East) Inspector General Satya Prakash Sharma said Friday.

He was speaking at a function at the Chennai Port where three Coast Guard ships - ICGS Avvayar, ICGS Habbah Khatun and ICGS Rani Jindan were decommissioned with full military honours, a Coast Guard release said.

Sharma said a major expansion and modernisation plan of the coast guard was underway and it was important to "pay off these ships.".....................
