can anyone tell me how many SMERCH did India buy from Russia??
India is supposed to get 62 Smerch systems based on the Tatra 816 10x10 truck chassis, by 2010 for a total of 750 million USD. Not exactly sure whether all of them have been delivered.

This is not an indigenous gun. This is under TOT from a Slovak firm.
Come on now man.... if China can call J-10 indigenous after buying out the LAVI design and modifying it and the world can accept it as a PLAAF creation, then even this is an indigenous gun because it can be modified as per the situation needs once the tech transfer/buy out is done. Money exchanges hands and the goods move into the custody of customer from supplier. Good going Slovakia. I think we should consider this trick that Chinese have already mastered. The former Soviet states like Czech, Slovakia and Warsaw Pact countries have respectable defense industry and develop good state of the art secondary and primary weapon systems.

More frequent tie-ups, JVs, tech transfers etc should be done so as to speed up our own domestic production of weapons. That way, we get to diversify our suppliers, we get the crucial tech, there's not too much discomfort to Russians since we're moving among their areas of influence and at the same time we're able to cultivate strong defense relations with these countries. A possible win-win situation if carried out well.

http://www.dailypioneer.com/286735/India’s-own-Bofors-ready-field-trials-in-progress.html

In a significant development that would provide the much-needed impetus to artillery's firepower, India is ready with an indigenous 155mm, 52-calibre state-of-the-art gun. The Bangalore-based defence public sector undertaking, Bharat Earth Movers Limited, is ready with the wheeled gun and field trials have already started at its testing tracks in the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Karnataka.
He also said, "For the wheeled gun project, we have tied up with a Slovakian company, DMD, for a defence offset and the vehicle has already been made available for trial.

The time frame is about three years from the date of order by the defence forces. We expect it to commence in the current year or at most the next year."

According to the BEML chief, the company was also looking at the tracked version of the same gun, which will give better fire power. "We have already set up a state-of-the-art, world-class test track. We have a firing range too," Natarajan said, adding that the PSU was also in the process of setting up infrastructure for the overhauling of T72 and T90 tanks.

i think the jv between drdo and denel regarding bhim sph was cancelled by mod after it was blacklisted.the drdo most probably has restarted the bhim project with an indegeneous gun and it makes appearence in defence expo 2010.

Bofors guns may now be made in India

The gun that blazed a trail of controversy may be finally made at home. It is likely that the OFBhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Ordnance%20Factory%20Board would get an order from Indian Army for making the 155x45 mm Bofors-type howitzers. This is the same specification purchased by the Indian army amidst all the controversy in mid-1980s. At the same time, the army has floated global tenders for the higher version of 155 X 52 mm caliber guns.

Director general (DG) of OFB http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=OFB D M Gupta told TOI certain formalities pertaining to the order were yet to be finalised. He was in city to attend a conference of of workers on quality management. The guns would be made using a transfer of technology (TOT) agreement already in place with the Swedish original equipment maker AB Bofors after the guns were purchased.

The order is expected to be placed in a couple of months. The OFB is hopeful because the order may be placed on nomination basis meaning there would be no other contender, added a senior official in this organisation. The TOT agreement that the OFB had entered into allows it to make the spares as well further strengthen its case. The OFB already has the set-up and the government has a policy of encouraging indigenous production if there is capacity, added the DG.

If the order is bagged, this would be for the first time that such guns would be entirely made in India. The production was expected to be undertaken at the Gun Carriage Factory at Jabalpur, which makes the 105mm Indian Field Guns, the only indigenously developed howitzers. Earlier, the factory had upgraded the existing 155x45 guns purchased from Sweden to 155x52 mm as well as the 130 mm guns to 155 mm, added a source. However, fresh order is expected only for making the 155x45 mm gun as global tenders have been floated for 155x52 mm guns.

Howitzers are identified by their barrel diameter. In case of 155x45 mm the first figure (155) refers to the diameter of the barrel while second (45) is indicates length of barrel is 45 times that of diameter. This fires a shell up to 30 kms while the 155X52 mm has the range of 40 kms.

The OFB would also be undertaking a programme of increasing production of Pinaka rockets that have a range of over 35 km, said Gupta. Without divulging the figures, he said the capacity would be more than doubled. "There were problems relating to its functioning in cold areas which have been sorted out and soon a programme of scaling up the production will be undertaken. Similar initiatives will be undertaken for augmenting production of shells for T-90 and Arjun tanks too. Other expansion programmes entailing Rs 2,000 crore are also awaiting approval of the government," he added.

Gupta said this financial year, the OFB would be clocking a 29% rise in turnover at Rs 11,208 crore as against Rs 8715 crore in previous fiscal.
