It's better to compare per capita crime then total no of crimes in a country, India is state equal to EU ,US & Russia combined the no of criminal cases in India for sure woukd be higher, but percapita crime rate must be lower, wouldn't like to talk about it ,but if we consider rape cases around the globe in per capita terms then ''sweden'' tops the list ,though it is considered one of the most peaceful countries across the world, for reasons well known to them, looks so ironic to me.

hmmmmm, im more willing to be agreed with the post#78, even if population of EU28 is less than half of India, i would compare India with EU28, China, and USA (the United States of America), considering India as the "United States of Indian subcontinent", even if population of India is around 4 times to USA itself :thumb:

china, well i don't know how accurate data from china would be. But yeah if India's crime rates are close to that of US then it is the best thing to happen as it would also mean we are alot more peaceful than them, but it's easier said than done,it's not so easy to happen and presently comparing US & India would paint an incorrect picture of India just because of the huge poplulation gap between the two, that is what i feel. :)

the above analysis of posts#80,#83 is mainly about the deaths due to conflicts, clashes between the groups/groups against the police etc. while the comparison of murder rate of US, India and rest of the society is as below. :thumb:

US is already a world leader in rapes/robberies, but just have a look on the murder rate in US/Americas as below, a worse figure than even Africa. which better justify state of a country where 1% Americans have more wealth than the bottom 90% :ranger:

List of countries by intentional homicide rate

we also have Murder rate as below. here, India won't be said doing good in this picture, while comparing "Absolute Number" of murders as below :ranger:
=> India tops world murder count - The Times of India
Comparison based on per 100,000 (lakh) people

Total Murders in Welfare society of US = 16,692/ 3100 (100,000) = 5.38

Total Murders in non-Welfare society of India = 32,719/ 12500 (100,000) = 2.61

=> @Ray

here we do give a credit to China to keep the list better for whole Asia as below, with high population and low murder rate.....

By region

UNODC murder rates most recent year (Per 100,000 Population)

Region - Rate

Africa - 12.5
Americas - 15.4

Asia - 2.9 :thumb:
Europe - 3.5
Oceania - 2.9
World - 6.9

and this is the finale state of USA, as the society as whole. even in case of Medical expanses, they use the word kill

John Boehner, Mitch McConnell vow to kill Obamacare - Jonathan Topaz - POLITICO.com

the nation fighting so many wars for "peace" in world, and the society talk about even the medical expanses like this :tsk:

once i said, "the society where more than 50% civilians have consumed heroine/cocaine/drugs at a time of life, even securing 50%+ votes in any parliamentary election doesn't mean that they may change right to wrong and wrong to right....." for example, even if rulers of US/UK secured 50%+ votes in their parliamentary election for "Iraq War", which resulted in more than a million deaths, while it was formally known as an Illegal war...

=> Iraq war was illegal and breached UN charter, says Annan | World news | The Guardian

Economic state of US, as a society as whole, is short listed as below ..... :ranger:

if we have a careful look on this curve, this is the first fall of Mexican born population since 1930-45 period, since WW2

=> and this is how US register drop in unemployment rate, as below.....

"Though the unemployment rate fell in March and April, both drops reflected fewer people looking for work, not more employment," :tsk:

Nearly half of US unemployed have given up looking for a job — RT USA

=> and why not, if we find a continued fall in Labor Force Employment Rate of USA from 66.2% in August/September 2008 to its lowest level at 62.8% last month. check the table as below, its the lowest level of "Employment Rate" of US since September 2008, which doesn't show it's better than any time since Lehman Brothers collapse in September 2008. and till then we find a parallel line at 66%+, showing no fall till August 2008.

=> and we have discussed before, i find high crime rate of US is mainly because of the fact that 1% Americans have more wealth than the bottom 90% population, as below

40 'Frightening' Facts On The Fall Of The US Economy
05/27/2013

If you know someone that actually believes that the U.S. economy is in good shape, just show them the statistics in this article. When you step back and look at the long-term trends, it is undeniable what is happening to us. We are in the midst of a horrifying economic decline that is the result of decades of very bad decisions. 30 years ago, the U.S. national debt was about one trillion dollars. Today, it is almost 17 trillion dollars. 40 years ago, the total amount of debt in the United States was about 2 trillion dollars. Today, it is more than 56 trillion dollars. At the same time that we have been running up all of this debt, our economic infrastructure and our ability to produce wealth has been absolutely gutted. Since 2001, the United States has lost more than 56,000 manufacturing facilities and millions of good jobs have been shipped overseas. Our share of global GDP declined from 31.8 percent in 2001 to 21.6 percent in 2011. The percentage of Americans that are self-employed is at a record low, and the percentage of Americans that are dependent on the government is at a record high. The U.S. economy is a complete and total mess, and it is time that we faced the truth.

The following are 40 statistics about the fall of the U.S. economy that are almost too crazy to believe...

#1, Back in 1980, the U.S. national debt was less than one trillion dollars. Today, it is rapidly approaching 17 trillion dollars...

#2, During Obama's first term, the federal government accumulated more debt than it did under the first 42 U.S presidents combined.

#3, The U.S. national debt is now more than 23 times larger than it was when Jimmy Carter became president.

#4, If you started paying off just the new debt that the U.S. has accumulated during the Obama administration at the rate of one dollar per second, it would take more than 184,000 years to pay it off.

#5, The federal government is stealing more than 100 million dollars from our children and our grandchildren every single hour of every single day.

#6, Back in 1970, the total amount of debt in the United States (government debt + business debt + consumer debt, etc.) was less than 2 trillion dollars. Today it is over 56 trillion dollars.....

#7, According to the World Bank, U.S. GDP accounted for 31.8 percent of all global economic activity in 2001. That number dropped to 21.6 percent in 2011.

#8, The United States has fallen in the global economic competitiveness rankings compiled by the World Economic Forum for four years in a row.

#9, According to The Economist, the United States was the best place in the world to be born into back in 1988. Today, the United States is only tied for 16th place.

#10, Incredibly, more than 56,000 manufacturing facilities in the United States have been permanently shut down since 2001.

#11, There are less Americans working in manufacturing today than there was in 1950 even though the population of the country has more than doubled since then.

#12, According to the New York Times, there are now approximately 70,000 abandoned buildings in Detroit.

#13, When NAFTA was pushed through Congress in 1993, the United States had a trade surplus with Mexico of 1.6 billion dollars. By 2010, we had a trade deficit with Mexico of 61.6 billion dollars.

#14, Back in 1985, our trade deficit with China was approximately 6 million dollars (million with a little "m") for the entire year. In 2012, our trade deficit with China was 315 billion dollars. That was the largest trade deficit that one nation has had with another nation in the history of the world.

#15, Overall, the United States has run a trade deficit of more than 8 trillion dollars with the rest of the world since 1975.

#16, According to the Economic Policy Institute, the United States is losing half a million jobs to China every single year.

#17, Back in 1950, more than 80 percent of all men in the United States had jobs. Today, less than 65 percent of all men in the United States have jobs.

#18, At this point, an astounding 53 percent of all American workers make less than $30,000 a year. :ranger:

#19, Small business is rapidly dying in America. At this point, only about 7 percent of all non-farm workers in the United States are self-employed. That is an all-time record low.

#20, Back in 1983, the bottom 95 percent of all income earners in the United States had 62 cents of debt for every dollar that they earned. By 2007, that figure had soared to $1.48.

#21, In the United States today, the wealthiest one percent of all Americans have a greater net worth than the bottom 90 percent combined. :tsk:

#22, According to Forbes, the 400 wealthiest Americans have more wealth than the bottom 150 million Americans combined.

#23, The six heirs of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton have as much wealth as the bottom one-third of all Americans combined.

#24, According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 146 million Americans are either "poor" or "low income".

#25, According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 49 percent of all Americans live in a home that receives direct monetary benefits from the federal government. Back in 1983, less than a third of all Americans lived in a home that received direct monetary benefits from the federal government.

#26, Overall, the federal government runs nearly 80 different "means-tested welfare programs", and at this point more than 100 million Americans are enrolled in at least one of them.

#27, Back in 1965, only one out of every 50 Americans was on Medicaid. Today, one out of every 6 Americans is on Medicaid, and things are about to get a whole lot worse. It is being projected that Obamacare will add 16 million more Americans to the Medicaid rolls.

#28, As I wrote recently, it is being projected that the number of Americans on Medicare will grow from 50.7 million in 2012 to 73.2 million in 2025.

#29, At this point, Medicare is facing unfunded liabilities of more than 38 trillion dollars over the next 75 years. That comes to approximately $328,404 for every single household in the United States.

#30, Right now, there are approximately 56 million Americans collecting Social Security benefits. By 2035, that number is projected to soar to an astounding 91 million.

#31, Overall, the Social Security system is facing a 134 trillion dollar shortfall over the next 75 years.

#32, Today, the number of Americans on Social Security Disability now exceeds the entire population of Greece, and the number of Americans on food stamps now exceeds the entire population of Spain.

#33, According to a report recently issued by the Pew Research Center, on average Americans over the age of 65 have 47 times as much wealth as Americans under the age of 35.

#34, U.S. families that have a head of household that is under the age of 30 have a poverty rate of 37 percent.

#35, As I mentioned recently, the homeownership rate in America is now at its lowest level in nearly 18 years.

#36, There are now 20.2 million Americans that spend more than half of their incomes on housing. That represents a 46 percent increase from 2001.

#37, 45 percent of all children are living in poverty in Miami, more than 50 percent of all children are living in poverty in Cleveland, and about 60 percent of all children are living in poverty in Detroit.

#38, Today, more than a million public school students in the United States are homeless. This is the first time that has ever happened in our history.

#39, When Barack Obama first entered the White House, about 32 million Americans were on food stamps. Now, more than 47 million Americans are on food stamps.

#40, According to one calculation, the number of Americans on food stamps now exceeds the combined populations of "Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming."

Prostitution and Poverty in the UK

In Britain, the recession has left many people struggling to make ends meet, but reports have shown that young people – young single mothers in particular, are feeling the worst of austerity, and many are turning to prostitution in pursuit of financial security.

Things are likely to get worse. In 2013-2014, a lone parent would receive on average £46.80 a year less in benefits due to governmental changes, while a couple with children would miss out on £52 a year. In 2014-2015, the projected figures are £260 less for single parents and £156 less for couples with children. In short, single parents – often the most financially vulnerable – are facing the harshest cuts in benefits.

This has led to an increase in prostitution, which has affected the industry's economy; many sex workers are reducing their charges (sometimes as much as 50 per cent) in order to beat competition from other sex workers. This contributes to a viscous circle; more single parents – usually women, enter prostitution out of financial desperation. Due to the increase in sex workers, they need to engage in the industry more to acquire the money they need. This in turn leads to a further increase in active sex workers and a further devaluation of prostitution ad infinitum.

One thing is clear – tough policing and stricter legislation is not the solution. Ukraine's capital – Kyiv has struggled with high prostitution levels since it gained independence in 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 2005, it introduced more rigorous legislation to try to combat the problem, to little effect. The country co-hosted the Euro 2012 football tournament with Poland and prepared itself for the explosion in sex tourism. Kyiv alone has an estimated 50,000 sex workers, twice that of the whole of Holland, despite prostitution being illegal in Ukraine and legal in Holland. And some suspect that this figure is even higher, with many young Ukrainian sex workers not wanting to come forward due to fear of shaming and imprisonment.

The only way to tackle the exploitation of young women is to tackle its root cause – poverty. To do otherwise would be like treating a disease with tissues instead of medicine. This can be achieved without reversing the entire austerity program (which no UK government is realistically likely to do).

Firstly, the government could take up Ed Miliband's living wage proposals. The introduction of this policy – providing tax incentives to companies who pay a living wage instead of a minimum wage to their employees (£7.45 per hour outside London and £8.55 in London, compared to the £6.19 minimum wage) would save the taxpayer £2.2bn,according to the think tank Resolution Foundation. It would also help to minimise in-work poverty, which would help single parents make ends meet without turning to prostitution. :ranger:

Another step would be to reintroduce the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), as many of the hardest hit are young people – this includes students. The Women's National Commission (a UK women's issues pressure group) claim the shocking statistic that "50-75% of women in prostitution entered before they were 18" and that many of these had been absent from education throughout this time. Reconsidering the £9,000 tuition fee would also help to reduce the number of students turning to the sex industry out of fear of mountainous debts.

Of course, this article does not intend to argue for or against sex work as a career choice. There is a persuasive case made by libertarians and some sex-positive feminists that willing engagement in prostitution is a matter of personal liberty for those involved and not the concern of third parties. Without divulging into a philosophical discussion about such liberties, it is worth mentioning the statistic that in a study on feminism and psychology, 92 per cent of sex workers said that they wanted to leave prostitution "immediately". In a different study, 74 per cent of women cited "poverty", paying "household expenses" and supporting children as a "primary motivator" for involvement in the industry. It should be clear by now that the vast majority of European sex workers are exploited out of economic desperation and are not pursuing a career that they necessarily consider legitimate, empowering or advisable – whatever one's position on such political theory.

"She was too ignorant as yet to know that the chances of her finding work unaided were practically nil; but the next four days gradually enlightened her", read the pages of A Clergyman's Daughter – George Orwell's understated and second novel. The book is an exploration of poverty in the 1930s, in which the protagonist, Dorothy, is swept away by the cruel realities of homeless men and women, some of whom become sex workers for mild reprieve. She is bailed out by a rich relative while being "on the very verge of becoming one" – a prostitute. Unfortunately – even in the 21st century, not everybody is that lucky.

[//leftfootforward.org/2013/08/prostitution-and-poverty-in-the-uk/]Prostitution and Poverty in the UK | Left Foot Forward]

the above state of British women is simply because,"unskilled jobs are low paid." UK's economy just recovered its pre-crisis level, while its per capita income still around 5% lower than early 2008 level because of population growth since then, with more than double Public debt since then too. and this is how they are moving towards future, as a society as whole :ranger:

Australia is the country, where highest number of illegals aren't the Afghans, but the British passport holders. and as non-taxable income of illegal immigrants is always low paid,we know the things happening in UK from very close :ranger:

The Measure of Empowered Women

I made 4 posts on Mr Obama's Twitter about women empowerment as below. i think these posts may be kept here also, to keep its a record in this thread too :thumb:

Mr Barack Obama's statement on Twitter on 23rd January 2014, ""You can judge a nation, and how successful it will be, based on how it treats its women and its girls." —President Obama"

My Comment:-

1st; thats true. a strong nation is defined on the level it gives priority to its weak part of society. like women/schedule caste in india

2nd; only women/schedule caste in India get scholarships/ reservations in exams/jobs. and empowering women means, one day they will help others

3rd; one and there is only one measure of "Empowered Women", whether they reach a day when they may help other weak parts of society too :thumb:

4th; and Im strongly against encouraging girls only to fcuk here there, but not giving them right advises to go high in life/career :thumb:
With 13 million slaves in India, mostly women and children, don't think I would worry about the women in UK.

hmmm, this is the discussion about the Empowered Women of Western nations, as compared to Indian and other developing countries, considering the fact that their wages on prostitution is going down due to increased competition, as the 'unskilled jobs' are low paid, as per the topic of this thread :ranger:

EMPOWERED WESTERN WOMEN WHO CAN'T HELP THEMSELVES :tsk:

while they also get free Social Security+Free Medical also. its nothing but a disaster that even if half of the UK's budget goes for just social security (28%) and free medical (18%) = 46%, and then number of interest payment also come, on that debt UK is borrowing too much since 2008 recession, hence doubling their Public debt since then too

Influence of Western Culture on Indian Society

India is a secular country where the people have the freedom to practice any religion and also to convert into another religion of their choice. So, all the cultures are freely accepted and respected by the Indians. It's an environment to cultivate or build oneself ethically, socially and in all other aspects that lead an all over human development. :india:

Every culture is a combination of some good and bad features. All in one, culture means 'a way of life'. Every geographical body has its own custom viz. culture. People of different nations are recognized by their culture. :thumb: One should be proud on its impressive traditions. It is the responsibility of all citizens to preserve their own ethnicity.

Indian culture is richly known in other parts of the world since the ancient age. Its multi-diverse flavour has been consistently unique in its very own way. Manners, traditions, living and trading patterns etc. are one of the graceful components of Indian culture. The most important feature of Indian culture is its values. These values are deeply rooted within the heart, mind, body and soul of its dwellers.

But, the influence of western culture started in India during the 19th century when the british established their colony in the country.
Western culture, considered as the most advanced culture on globe, has started surmounting its flavour on Indian roots. Western culture has always shown its influence on Indian society. This could be for the multiple reasons like fascination, dreamy autonomy etc., which are somehow absent in Indian culture. Western culture conveys and promotes the ideas and values of advanced civilization across people of India.

There are ample of good things found in the western culture, which every Indian should proudly learn and adopt.:thumb: But what about the negative influences of the western culture? Every package comes with pros and cons. Indians should definitely use the culture strain before getting diluted under the flow of any cultural influence. The leading reasons for such impact are pursuit of wealth and power of Western media.

The culture of India has been shaped not only by its long history, unique geography and diverse demography, but also by its ancient heritages. Regarded by some historians as the "oldest living civilization of Earth", the Indian tradition dates back to 8,000 BC and has a continuous recorded history for over 2,500 years.

Westernization should not affect the core traditions of Indian society but may change the lifestyle and apparent characteristics of the society with the graceful add-ons like punctuality, trustworthiness, loyalty, professionalism should be welcomed and adored.

These changes are like the betraying our old way of life, which we obtained through our ancestors. Updating is necessary but getting washed-off in influence is wide of the mark. If this continues, days will not be far away when the famous Indian civilization would be buried not by others but by the Indian themselves. :ranger:

Due to globalization the rich culture of India is disappearing. The most impact is of western culture on India culture. Western culture is based more on materialistic factors where as our culture has a spiritual base.

The culture of India is been disappearing by many ways the youths in India do not respect their elders, the families in India live separate. And thus have lost contacts with their other relatives the big point which is making the culture of India to disappear in bollywood the dressing style of the actresses, the slang word used in movies are been influenced the youth to bad step of life. The young ones try to act the same as these actors do which is very bad to the culture of India.

The lack of morals, the lacking faith in God, having late night parties, the influence of drugs and alcohols, least interest in Indian languages like Sanskrit, Hindi, Celebrating mothers day, fathers day, valentine day, fools day etc rather than celebrating our Indian festivals and thus wasting their precious time of life, Thinking to be independent at an early age

So, I strongly say that accept good from that and try to know our Indian culture more than u definitely change mind. :truestory:

Italy Saved From Recession by Prostitution and Drugs

Italy is no longer in recession, it emerged this week, due to a change in the way data calculations are made in the EU to illegal economic activities such as drug trafficking, prostitution, and alcohol and tobacco smuggling.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, GDP in Italy rose from a 0.1% decline for the first quarter to a flat reading once revised according to the new EU criteria meaning Italy has escaped a third recession in six years.

In a 2008 directive the UN said that if governments do not chart all transactions then "accounts as a whole are liable to be seriously distorted". The announcement that the country would introduce this change from October was made on May 22nd by Istat, Italy's statistic-gathering body. The new system - SEC 2010 - has been described by the EU as an "internationally compatible EU accounting framework", aimed at creating greater comparability in the GDP figures of member states, for fairer distribution of EU funds.

Pakistan is 'epicenter of Islamic terrorism'

New York (CNN) -- The suspect in the Times Square bombing attempt was caught as he was seeking to flee to Pakistan, a nation that analyst Fareed Zakaria calls the "epicenter of Islamic terrorism."

"It's worth noting that even the terrorism that's often attributed to the war in Afghanistan tends to come out of Pakistan, to be planned by Pakistanis, to be funded from Pakistan or in some other way to be traced to Pakistan," said Zakaria. He added that Pakistan's connection with terrorist groups goes back decades and has often been encouraged by that nation's military for strategic reasons.

//edition.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/05/05/zakaria.pakistan.terror/
Abbottabad -- The military town where bin Laden hid in plain sight

CNN) -- One week ago, the chief of Pakistan's Army Staff, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, told graduating cadets in the city of Abbottabad that the "back of terrorism" in Pakistan had been broken, thanks to the sacrifices of Pakistan's soldiers.

Kayani was speaking at the "passing out parade" at the prestigious Kakul military academy in Abbottabad, the West Point of Pakistan. At that very moment, the man who had dragged Pakistan into the "War on Terror" a decade earlier was, it transpires, just a mile or two away, living in apparent comfort behind the high walls of a very private compound. Osama bin Laden, who had declared war on Pakistan, had apparently been living for months in a city that had made its name as a military garrison.

Abbottabad, pronounced AHB-tah-bahd, is some 60 miles by winding mountainous roads north of Pakistan's capital. Surrounded by green hills, it is renowned for its trees and parks. It's a popular retirement place for officers in the Pakistani army, partly because of its military academy, but also because of its agreeable climate. During British rule, the Imperial Gazeteer of India described it as "picturesquely situated," 4,120 feet above sea level.

Abbottabad sits on the Karakoram Highway, an engineering marvel that links Pakistan with China through the Himalayas. Before much of Pakistan became off-limits to most foreign tourists, it was also a popular spot for those on their way to and from the Swat valley and the foothills of the Himalayas.

Pakistani military fought WOT (war on terror) along with US for more than a decade since 9/11 2001, Pakistan received hefty funds from US/EU in this regard to, and finally OBL was found living in luxury near Pakistani camp itself :ranger:

Impact of US's High Crime Rate on Rest of World

9/11 conspiracy and the role of Pakistani Military

i have been visiting Muslims forums, Pakistani and Bangladeshi forums and talking their members sometimes too, and we find almost all the Muslims countries and their media says that 9/11 conspiracy was done by CIA itself, to organize attacks on the Muslims countries. i mean, almost none of the Muslims of world, who isn't agreed with this theory, as per my experience....

and then we find Pakistan part of WOT, war on terror, and received hefty funds from US/West for their support too since 2001. Mr P.Musharraf was the main man of US in Pakistan in this regard, no wonder why he is enjoying a luxury life in UK at present, a dictator and the head of Pakistani Military since 2001 .......

and then we finally find Mr US President rewarding brave US's military for their hunt for OBL, the so called biggest enemy of US till then, who was finally found near Pakistani military camp in Abbottabad. it was a secret operation without informing Pakistani establishments, and the informer, a doctor, was put on life imprisonment by the Pakistani Judiciary for his spying of OBL in behalf of US too..... as he did spying of OBL, the so called messenger of Islam....

therefore, a single statement for the 9/11 conspiracy is as below:-
"CIA itself organized 9/11 attacks by using OBL, to get a good reason to attack on the Muslim countries, whose main ally for War On Terror was Pakistan. AND HENCE, the main convict of 9/11 attack, OBL, was found near Pakistani Military camp." with rewarding a luxury life to Mr Musharraf in UK, head of Pakistani Military that time, who is charged for Benajir Bhutto murder case too

US and their allies on WOT, and this is how their foreign secretaries talk with its ally in private, as below :tsk:
I became Secretary of State, they were trying to basically appease the Pakistani Taliban who were attacking them. So they were trying to draw a distinction between the good terrorists and the bad terrorists, because we had funded the "good terrorists" together. :ranger:

Referring to the support US provided to these insurgent groups during the fight against the Russians in Afghanistan, Clinton said when she meets Pakistani officials, they rightly say, "You're the ones who told us to cooperate with these people. You're the ones who funded them. :toilet:

as discussed in the post#87, the country where 1% Americans have more wealth than the bottom 90% US's civilians, so high crime rate is justified to an extent :ranger:

Crime is never justified even if the system is flawed. US is a huge country so it's only obvious that we may have a lot of everything. A lot of idiots but also a lot of smart people. There is a flaw in the system and it HAS TO be patched, things need to get better, society needs to be treated in a more fair way but there is no justification to crime.

The State of Rape in Delhi Since Dec. 16, 2012
Dec 16, 2014

Tuesday marks two years since India's capital witnessed a gang rape and murderso upsetting that it triggered changes in the law and forced the country to confront its poor record on the treatment of women.

At the start of this month, almost two years to the day since the Dec. 16 gang rape of a woman on a moving bus, the clarion for women's safety began sounding again in the national capital: Another young woman alleged that she was sexually assaulted in a car booked using the Uber Technologies app.

The news turned the national conversation back to the safety of women in Delhi and a discussion about whether anything had really changed in the city as a result of Dec. 16, 2012 ensued.

Many felt that because a woman was attacked even in a privately booked car, little had improved for women traveling around the city.

So what does the data show about attacks on women in Delhi and India more widely?

In the year following the Delhi gang rape in 2012, the latest figures from the National Crime Records Bureau show that the number of rapes reported in India vaulted by over a third, with more than 33,700 reported to police in 2013. That's one every 15 minutes.

Compare that to 2012, when 24,923 rapes were reported to the police, a rate of one every 21 minutes. In the 10 years since 2003, the number of rapes reported across the country has doubled.

//si.wsj.net/public/resources/images/BN-GA200_isampl_G_20141215063353.jpg
Of course, it's not possible to know whether these jumps indicate that more rapes are taking place or that women are now more emboldened to report them.

Police say it's the latter and that the surge in the number of reported rapes is positive, a reflection of the increased willingness of victims to come forward and report these crimes in a country where many women are often too scared to speak up about sexual crime for fear of bringing shame on their families.

Women activists say that even after such a jump, many sexual assaults still go unreported and argue that some abuses of women – rape in marriage, for instance – cannot be captured by the figures because marital rape is not a crime in India.

What about the situation in Delhi?

According to the NCRB, between 2012 and 2013, the rate of rape, or the number of reported rapes for every 100,000 women, in Delhi increased more than in any other city in India.

In 2013, there were 19.02 rapes reported for every 100,000 women compared to 7.72 rapes for every 100,000 women in 2012 in the capital. Only Gwalior, a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, has a higher rape rate with 22.80 reported per 100,000 women. But it didn't jump as far as the rate rise in Delhi, and is up from a rate of 11. 69 in 2012.

And the national picture for safety of women as a whole? Take a look at the map below which shows the rate of crimes against women reported in each state per 100,000 women in 2013, Delhi state has one of the highest rates of crimes against women that include rape, kidnapping and abduction, molestation, dowry deaths and cruelty by husband or a relative.

A Sharp Rise in Rape Cases in India

here, for the year 2008
Rapes in Welfare society of US = 93,934/ 3100 (100,000) = 30.3 :toilet:
Rapes in non-Welfare society of India = 18,357/ 125,00 (100,000) = 1.47 :ranger:

(per 100,000 calculation, considering population of US at 310 million and India 1.25billion.)

//timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/India-tops-world-murder-count/articleshow/3091319.cms?referral=PM

and again we have Rape Statistics of India for 2011 as below:-
And yet India only ranks third for the number of rapes reported each year. What country ranks first? The United States. In India, a country of over 1.2 billion people, 24,206 rapes were reported in 2011.

Is India the Rape Capital of the World? | MORE Magazine

and here, as per the above 2 news, we do see a 33% jump in rape numbers in India within just 3 years. (18,359 in year 2008 to 24,206 rapes by 2011)here, when did Ms Sunny Leone came to India, no offence but just a question ....
isn't it good to keep people living in slum, not to dream for luxury life/fun, until we may reduce population of India, until India may provide a good life to them all?

=> and in the recent news for the year 2013, in the last article, the number jump to 33,707, around twice to 2008 level :toilet:

I did not know that Finland was so high on the list. Why has this been hidden from the public by our government. They should promote these positive news, instead of all the negstive euro news.
@jouni

how do you see this positive news about Finland, as in my post#44? :ranger:

Why Americans think it is right to own guns?

After mass shootings killed 12 moviegoers in Aurora, Colorado, and six Sikh worshippers in Wisconsin this summer, it may seem a little bizarre that many Americans insist people have the right — an inalienable right — to buy a gun that can spit 60 bullets per second. :ranger:

Yet it is such a deep part of the culture that no event, not these murders or the more ordinary 11,500 other firearm-related homicides that take place every year in the US, not to mention that 17,500 gun-related suicides, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can dislodge the notion that the ownership of more than 300 million guns makes us safer.

The belief in guns is so strong that solution to gun-related murders is often imagined to be more guns. For example, even after a horrific campus shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007 that resulted in 32 deaths, some politicians pointed to the university's campus-wide gun ban as a contributing factor, on the theory that the problem wasn't that the unbalanced student came to school with two semi-automatic weapons but that students and faculty weren't themselves armed. Nor were they alone: a national student group of over 15,000 members formed asking to overturn laws restricting the use of concealed weapons on campus.

The Right Stuff

The legal foundation of this madness is the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which reads "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

That might not sound like a blanket right to bear arms, and it wasn't intended as such. Fearful of European-style standing armies, the authors of the amendment believed that citizen militias were the only way to prevent tyranny, according to historian Saul Cornell, writing in his 2006 book A Well-Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America. Cornell concluded in his study that they saw the amendment as more of a guarantee of a civic obligation than a personal right.

In fact, it's so hard to read as a personal right that it wasn't until 2010 that the Supreme Court successfully overcame the text and with no equivocation ruled that the second amendment meant people had a personal right to keep and bear arms, unconnected to military service.

The truth is that the right to gun ownership is much more securely fixed in our hearts than in our laws — and in recent years, a triumph of the well-organised and well-funded pro-gun lobby. In 1959, when Gallup first asked the question, 60% of people favoured a general handgun ban. Asked recently, it's fallen to 26% — a record low. True, more people support a ban on semiautomatic weapons — 53% — but gun ownership remains high:47% say they have a gun in their house.

How did this happen? There is a residual love of guns that is a legacy of pioneer days and among rural people, a reflection of an attachment to hunting. Certainly, some people do hunt — a few kids I grew up with out in Oregon hunted. My best friend in junior high would always gnaw on homemade venison for his lunch — salty gray-green stuff that had the consistency of rope.

Every year, a hunters' club offered a hunter's safety course in the evening, after school, which were lectures you needed to pass to get your hunting licence — but the course always sounded a bit boring, like becoming a Boy Scout, and hunting itself was more a hobby some families had, like going to church, not a subject everyone thought about or talked about.

But hunting is not really what's behind the still-growing love of guns. President Obama, as candidate Obama in 2008, in a rare moment of accidental candour once described the residents of dying industrial towns in the Midwest as bitter people who "cling to guns or religion". Although he later recanted, he was right to a certain extent. At the same time, he also missed the point: in the US, guns have become a kind of religion in themselves. 'Power'

In May, 24-year-old James Holmes, a failing University of Colorado student, started buying guns. He bought four guns at Denver-area gun shops, including a 12-gauge Remington 870 Express Tactical shotgun, a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 semi-automatic rifle, and a Glock 22 handgun.

Around the same time, Holmes also began ordering bullets and body armour online — reportedly over 50 packages, according to newspaper accounts. On July 20, he bought a ticket for the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises Again, the latest Batman saga. Then about 20 minutes into the movie, went out to his car, girded himself up with his arsenal, came back and started shooting.

Clint Eastwood once said he made his violent movies to give people hope, imagining a young guy who has a job, maybe cleaning swimming pools, and has no sense of hope for the future. :toilet:

Afghanistan worst place in the world for women, but India in top five

A woman works at a sunflower field at Kunwarpur village, east of Allahabad, India. Her country has been ranked the fourth worst in the world for women.

Targeted violence against female public officials, dismal healthcare and desperate poverty make Afghanistan the world's most dangerous country in which to be born a woman, according to a global survey released on Wednesday.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Pakistan, India and Somalia feature in descending order after Afghanistan in the list of the five worst states, the poll among gender experts shows.

The appearance of India, a country rapidly developing into an economic super-power, was unexpected. It is ranked as extremely hazardous because of the subcontinent's high level of female infanticide and sex trafficking.

Others were less surprised to be on the list. Informed about her country's inclusion, Somalia's women's minister, Maryan Qasim, responded: "I thought Somalia would be first on the list, not fifth."

The survey has been compiled by the Thomson Reuters Foundation to mark the launch of a website, TrustLaw Woman, aimed at providing free legal advice for women's groups around the world.

High maternal mortality rates, limited access to doctors and a "near total lack of economic rights" render Afghanistan such a threat to its female inhabitants. "Continuing conflict, Nato airstrikes and cultural practices combine to make Afghanistan a very dangerous place for women," said Antonella Notari, head of Women Change Makers, a group that supports women social entrepreneurs around the world.

"Women who do attempt to speak out or take on public roles that challenge ingrained gender stereotypes of what is acceptable for women to do or not, such as working as policewomen or news broadcasters, are often intimidated or killed."

The "staggering levels of sexual violence" in the lawless east of the DRC account for its second place in the list. One recent US study claimed that more than 400,000 women are raped there each year. The UN has called Congo the rape capital of the world.

"Rights activists say militia groups and soldiers target all ages, including girls as young as three and elderly women," the survey reports, "They are gang raped, raped with bayonets and some have guns shot into their vaginas."

Pakistan is ranked third on the basis of cultural, tribal and religious practices harmful to women. "These include acid attacks, child and forced marriage and punishment or retribution by stoning or other physical abuse," the poll finds.

Divya Bajpai, reproductive health adviser at the International HIV/Aids Alliance, added: "Pakistan has some of the highest rates of dowry murder, so-called honour killings and early marriage." According to Pakistan's human rights commission, as many as 1,000 women and girls die in honour killings annually.

India is the fourth most dangerous country. "India's central bureau of investigation estimated that in 2009 about 90% of trafficking took place within the country and that there were some 3 million prostitutes, of which about 40% were children," the survey found.

Forced marriage and forced labour trafficking add to the dangers for women. "Up to 50 million girls are thought to be 'missing' over the past century due to female infanticide and foeticide,", the UN population fund says, because parents prefer to have young boys rather than girls.

Somalia, a state in political disintegration, suffers high levels of maternal mortality, rape, female genital mutilation and limited access to education and healthcare.

Qasim added: "The most dangerous thing a woman in Somalia can do is to become pregnant. When a woman becomes pregnant her life is 50-50 because there is no antenatal care at all. There are no hospitals, no healthcare, no nothing.

"Add to that the rape cases that happen on a daily basis, and female genital mutilation being done to every single girl in Somalia. Add to that famine and drought. Add to that the fighting [which means] you can die any minute, any day."

Monique Villa, the chief executive of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, said: "Hidden dangers – like a lack of education or terrible access to healthcare – are as deadly, if not more so, than physical dangers like rape and murder which usually grab the headlines.

"In Afghanistan, for instance, women have a one in 11 chance of dying in childbirth. In the top five countries, basic human rights are systematically denied to women.

"Empowering women tackles the very roots of poverty. In the developing world when a woman works, her children are better fed and better educated because they spend their money for their family."

The survey was based on responses from more than 200 aid professionals, academics, health workers, policymakers, journalists and development specialists chosen for their expertise in gender issues.

Each country was also ranked in terms of six risk factors including: health, discrimination and lack of access to resources, cultural and religious practices, sexual violence, human trafficking and conflict-related violence.

In terms of individual risk categories, Afghanistan was deemed to be the most dangerous for health, economic/discrimination and non-sexual violence; the Congo is most plagued by rape and sexual violence; and India has most problems with trafficking.

"You have to look at all the dangers to women, all the risks women and girls face," said Elisabeth Roesch, who works on gender-based violence for the International Rescue Committee in Washington.

"If a woman can't access healthcare because her healthcare isn't prioritised, that can be a very dangerous situation as well."

The TrustLaw website has been in existence for some time, linking up local NGOs and social entrepreneurs with established law firms who are prepared to offer legal advice on a pro-bono basis. The groups are vetted by Transparency International.

More than 450 law firms are already involved including some from China. Among those that have recently benefited have been the charity Riders for Health, which delivers medicine to remote villages, and reviewed its contracts in Nigeria.

sir, here its a simple case, "the society where criterion of getting success in life isn't education, people are then more willing to commit crimes to go high in life/ have luxury in life." the very first conclusion of crime rate comparison among the above 3 democratic countries......
