Brazil nightclub fire: At least 232 die in Brazilian nightclub fire 'after indoor fireworks display during band performance' | Mail Online

Death toll still unknown and may be higher as more bodies are pulled from wreckage while hundreds more are expected to be injured
Official cause unknown, but reports claim it was caused by a firework during a band performance
Witness said a 'weak' flare hit the ceiling, and 'spread in a matter of seconds'
Video shows dramatic scenes of people trying to rescue people from the club, using axes to smash through an outer wall
Similar fire happened in the States 10 years ago.

It happened in the city of Santa Maria (Saint Mary), Rio Grande do Sul State (South Great River State), in the southern region of Brazil.

There are not yet a official list of deaths. Statistics were 245, after declined to 231, and last time I saw were 233 deaths. It dont were considered those people admited in hospitals, only the bodies found inside nightclub. Hospitals registered around 100 admissions. Likely, the total amount of deaths will increase next days.

This was the result of a mistakes' series.

1) The nightclub permission documents were out of date. So, it was illegal.

2) Guards outside the main entrance locked the door to not allow the people to exit without payment when confusion has begun.

3) The extinguishers don't worked.

4) 3 of 4 emergency exits were locked. Only one opened and it was so hard to find, located beside a bathroom. Several people missed the correct door and entered in bathroom. It was found a pile with 180 bodies there.

5) Overpopulation: Around 1000 people inside it.

The country are shocked.

A tragic incident indeed.

However, what is more shocking is that almost all nightclub fire tragedies have some things in common.
1 Club running either illegally or with invalid papers.
2 Fireworks in the club
3 Many exits, but almost all remain closed
4 Most deaths due to asphyxiation rather than burns

I wonder what precautions clubs in our country have taken. Anyone been to one of these personally? What have you observed?
