It's soldiers vs GRP after cell charger tiff
The Kathua railway station platform in Jammu was turned into a battleground by the troops of the Indian Army's 225 Field Regiment as they attacked a Government Railway police station and mercilessly beat up policemen on duty late Monday night.
One of the critically-hurt jawans received six stitches to his forehead while five others were hospitalised.
The Army jawans allegedly vandalised GRP post and forcibly dragged one of the GRP men to a nearby unit before returning for negotiations to hush up the matter in the office of Superintendent of Police, Kathua.
Sources said the ugly brawl between the Armymen and the GRP men started around 9.30 pm after one of the GRP men stationed near the doorframe metal detector objected to the behaviour of a jawan waiting to board the train. The soldier was keen to use the same switchboard where the metal detector was plugged in to charge his mobile handset.
The jawan, identified as Sepoy Deepak Kumar, lost his temper after being told by the GRP men on duty not to switch off the metal detector for security reasons. Instead of complying, official sources claimed the sepoy of 225 Field Regiment attacked the GRP constable on duty.
When other GRP men arrived on the scene they escorted him to their police station for questioning. The Army jawan sent a SOS to his unit and after some time a large group of soldiers cordoned off the GRP post and beat up policemen on duty.
Official sources confirmed a Lt-Colonel rank officer, three captains and two subedar majors were leading the group of jawans who stormed the GRP post and beat up policemen present there. Presence of about a dozen heavily armed men from the quick reaction team of the Army triggered panic among the passengers.
Eyewitness reports said as large number of Armymen stormed the GRP post at the Kathua railway station late Monday evening as the railway staff, local shopkeepers and passengers ran helter-skelter apprehending firing.
The critically injured head constable Jarnail Singh, who is now admitted in the Kathua hospital, said, "It was around 10 pm. He was present in the GRP post when a group of heavily armed Army men attacked their post and thrashed 'Munshi' and other jawans mercilessly. The Army jawans then attacked me and pushed me to the ground."
Terming it an "unfortunate incident", Superintendent Police, GRP, Shiv Kumar told The Pioneer that such incidents should not happen with jawans of the belt forces. "We have registered two FIR's against Lt Col AU Khan, Capt Tyagi and Sepoy Deepak Kumar of 225 Field Regiment Kalibari for attempt to murder, rioting, abduction and assault on policemen." Interestingly, Army officers refused to take calls on telephone. Meanwhile, a team of senior officers of the Army met GRP officers late Tuesday evening to hold some more negotiations but no official statement was issued by the office of the Defence spokesperson.
