SRINAGAR: For the first time in the last two decades of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, an angry mob on Saturday set ablaze the house of an overground worker (OGW) of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) at Nowpora in Sopore district for attempting to kidnap a local girl, Sopore SP Abdul Qayoom said.

According to the SP, Lashkar-e-Taiba operative Imran Ahmad Jabroo was arrested following a complaint. One AK-47 rifle was recovered from his possession.

The angry mob torched the house and two cars in the compound of the house belonging to the Lashkar operative.

The police officer said the accused tried to kidnap a local girl on gunpoint on Friday night. The girl was rescued after the inmates raised their voice and the neighbours came to their help, SP Qayoom said.

"Our party reached the spot and arrested the accused," he said.

Jabroo, according to police records, was arrested twice for different crimes last year. The locals, however, complained about his release and his involvement in several other crimes.

Security has been beefed up in Sopore following the arrest of the Lashkar operative and the local agitation.
