There is a close connection between Milnor's theorem and pro-l Galois grp over the rational number field. In particular, the theorems relating lower central series to the degree of the image of the Magnus embedding are somewhat underexplored, in my opinion. Although I must admit I am not very familiar with Michael Jamison's works.
