Country flag
drum fed is good option, but LMG really needs to be light, more ammo more weight.
INSAS LMG is bit heavy for drum fed, hope its new versions are lighter!!

Or if one likes movies Arnold's movies are great bet, kill 200 men and no need to load, carry 10 guns and run, them go on to have deadly knife fight...or we can throw nalka at enemy or scream at them or flip googles and all will just die.
idea is to save ammo that is why regular magazine.

Wiki says 5.56X30mm is "experimental cartridge":

The MARS (Mini Assault Rifle System) was an experimental, scaled-down variant of the M16 rifle tested by Colt as a personal defense weapon (PDW) in the 1990s. It was chambered for the experimental 5.56x30mm MARS cartridge. The 5.56x30mm cartridge fired a 55 grain projectile at 790 m/s (2,591.9 ft/s). The rifle was patented in 1998 (US patent no. 5,827,992).

Please post a video or pic of INSAS LMG with bigger Magazine.
Insas LMG doesnt have a bigger magazine,,, also i dont find it is needful. A bigger magazine just cause logistic problem and loss of bullet. Ask any army man. Spray of bullet is only needed in ambush situation ,, and an ambush situation doesnot need an LMG, assault rifles with full auto mode is enough.

Re: INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

Belt feed Machine gun is known as GPMG in IA and there are no INSAS GPMG..

Only INSAS LMG, that comes with 30rnd mag ..
INSAS LMG is basically our version of what Russian did with their AK-74 by modifying it into RPK-74 with a heavier barrel.

I'm still puzzled though why IA never acquired PKM belt fed GPMG for its troops, i guess atleast one machine gun should be assigned in each section.

Russia/USA everybody does any reason why IA not doing so?

@ Kunal perhaps you could shed some light of the role of different categories of weapons carbines,SMG,GPMG,HMG etc that would certainly help thxs

Re: INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

India use FN-MAG, But its restricted to static position and very few are used as GPMG, That is why there are only those PKM exists which are captured..

1. SMG = Officer / JCO, Driver others, It is a PDW..
2. GPMG = Belt feed heavy suppressive fire support..
3. HMG = Long range and anti material machine gun..
4. LMG = Light Machine gun, Light enough to use while charging and quick reaction support..

Re: INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

Kunal Sir, is the Negev in service with the Army??
@AshutoshNSingh: I thought it is one of the best GPMGs in service across the world...isn't it?

Negev in service with Marcos and if am not mistaken with Garud also.
Negev is more in the league of M-249 a SAW (Squad assault weapon), M-240, M-60, PKM are more in the league of GPMG/LMG.

Perhaps kunal can shed more light as these role overlaps

IMI Negev 'GPMG', or say M249 GPMG. Sounds ridiculous. IA still lives in WWII era
Why you people are always ready to show your army down without any sort of knowledge or reason, please do understand that an LMG costs less, so the number grows, for reason of heavy fire power we have AGLs and MMGs. Remember spray of bullets are needed in an ambush situation when the enemy is close enough and when the enemy is close you dont need a LMG, assault rifle can do the jobs, or SMGs can do it. Whereas in other cases a LMG with low magazine power helps in less logistic problem, agility and low bullet expense. This is the reason that after so many years the bren has been one of the most eligible LMGs. Basically a chain fed LMG is of not much use. You can perform research on this and you will get same result. In case of defense position spraying of bullet is done by MMGs.

@shom, You are correct but there is a need for suppressive fire and 30rnd mag is not enough, for that IA need a GPMG, though LMG can have both Mag and Drum feed as per need, INSAS has only Mag feed as per need..

An LMG need to be less bulgy and easy to move around, Small and compact is the solution..

Though a 50rnd Drum based on this design can be made for INSAS LMG..

FN-MAG is heavy compare to PKM and not suited for mobile Infantry squads..

PKM need special ammo not made in India, Only captured PKM and ammo is used in CT ..
