Around 2 decades ago Mid Day a daily published in Mumbai used to run a tiny column of about 3-4 lines at the bottom of the inner pages of their daily edition which listed the number of deaths occuring on railway lines running in Mumbai & the suburbs immediately outside Mumbai connected to it by the suburban railway network , with the number of deaths occuring on that particular day as well as the total such deaths which occurred up until that point in time.

Most of these deaths were listed under the accidental death category including suicides , being run over by the train while crossing the tracks , falling from the train due to over crowding , etc

Some two decades ago it used to report figures of some 3000 deaths per annum. Subsequently they discontinued this practice of publishing those figures. You can only imagine what it's like today.

The annual figures are public even now. Of course, not all of them are attributable to falling off trains (majority aren't) but you will get the gist.

They were always publicly available once the RTI was passed. That wasn't the issue rather it is a compilation of those numbers & publishing them in mainstream media where more people get to see it or in other words generate talking points , which is the real issue.
It is on media though.
