India makes headway with ELF site construction (Janes)
By James Hardy
3/4/2013

Imagery taken by DigitalGlobe in January 2013 provides an update on the construction of India's new Extremely Low-Frequency (ELF) facility in the south of the country.

The construction began in March 2012, when Admiral Nirmal Verma, chief of the naval staff of the Indian Navy (IN), laid the cornerstone for the ELF facility near the village of Vijaya Narayanam, about 23 km north of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu. It is co-located with the IN's Very Low-Frequency (VLF) communications station, which transmits at 18.2 kHz.

The ELF station, which is believed to be being built by Indian firm Larsen & Toubro, will have nuclear-hardened bunkers and is expected to be commissioned in 2015. Russia is closely associated with the research and development for the facility, which is expected to be similar to Russia's own ELF transmitter at the ZEVS facility near Murmansk.

ELF transmission is used to communicate very brief commands to submerged submarines. Such transmissions can travel thousands of miles and through extended depths of seawater. ELF transmissions are generally initiated during circumstances in which conventional communications channels have been disrupted or destroyed.

India Expects To Have Sub-Based Nukes By 2015-16
By Jay Menon [email protected]
Source: AWIN First

April 29, 2013
India is working toward having a sea-based nuclear deterrent capability within next three years, the country's security adviser says.

The work on the development of the "third leg of the triad [of nuclear delivery systems], which is submarine-based, is in progress," says Shyam Saran, chairman of the country's National Security Advisory Board. "It is expected that a modest sea-based deterrence will be in place by 2015 or 2016."

India already has land-based surface-to-surface nuclear missiles with its Agni-I, Agni-II and Agni-III, along with the Prithvi-I and Prithvi-II missile variants. The country also can launch airborne nuclear missiles from Mirage 2000 and Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft.

India has previously tested its submarine-launched missile — dubbed "Sagarika," or K-15 — which can carry nuclear warheads. It would join the U.S., the U.K., China, Russia and France in having submarine-launched nuclear weapons.

India's nuclear policy, which was formally adopted in 2003, is guided by the current territorial situation, especially with its south Asian neighbor Pakistan relentlessly building up its nuclear arsenal in recent years.

"India does have a credible theory of how its nuclear weapons may be used and that is spelled out in its nuclear doctrine," Saran says.

India's Nuclear Submarine force shaping up

INS Arihant India's first locally built nuclear submarine is just few weeks away from its reactor going critical (activated), once nuclear reactor goes critical INS Arihant will be ready for Sea Trials and later INS Arihant will be integrated with weapons for weapons trials.

According to sources close to idrw.org second Arihant-class nuclear submarine, to be named INS Aridaman is also shaping up and plans are to have launch by mid of next year, INS Aridaman will also be integrated soon with nuclear reactor, once launch takes place but still will require another two years before it is handed over to Indian navy for sea trials.

Work on Hull of still to be named third Arihant-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine has begun and launch is expected at the same time when INS Aridaman goes to sea trials , development of the third submarine will be at much faster rate than other two submarines since production will be stabilized by then .Displacing about 6,000 tonnes, the 112 metre-long Arihant-class of boomer submarines are powered by indigenously-built 80-MW nuclear power plants. Each submarine is said to store 12 K-15 missiles besides torpedoes and torpedo-launched cruise missiles.

Russian-built INS Chakra which has been leased from Russia for ten years has already been inducted into Indian navy and recent spotting of the Chinese nuclear submarine patrolling in Indian Ocean has prompted Indian navy to give serious thought on leasing a second nuclear submarine from Russia.

In 2003 India had planned to lease two Akula-class submarines, but agreed to lease only for a single Akula SSN, Russia after handing over INS Chakra to India have expressed their willingness to lease to India a second Nuclear Submarine but it is still unclear if the offer was of another Akula-class submarines or of Yasen-class submarine which is based on Akula class submarine but a new modern development , Russia has already inducted first lead submarine of Yasen-class submarine into its navy and are working on second submarine .

It has been variously reported that the Reactor of Arihant will go critical soon. But as per my info, it went critical last year. The sub is ready in all aspects. The induction of Aridaman will be much faster than what is being stated.

Your info is totally Wrong. How can a reactor goes Critical with out Fuel ? No2: How can any one can load High unstable Nuclear Fuel when works not yet completed on board INS ARIHANT ? Its already reported That 2nd Nuke Sub INS Aridaman will all be Lauched next Year Mid and handed over to Indian Navy by 2015 There fore Nuclear Reactor will be installed very soon as Possible and It will go critical and Nuclear Fusion will be stabalised by next year End. The 3rd Nuclear Sub will also be Launched With Aridaman too.So by 2015 Indian Navy might have 3 nuclear submarine Or atleast 2018 we will have all 4 submarine.Follow on orders expected. Atleast 3 more. Then 6 new Next Gen,Bigger and better Nuclear Subs will be developed by 2020-2022. India expected to have atleast 14 Nuclear Submarine or More by 2030
