Concept of using airpower to reach enemy / mv / pirate ship was absent. ( not so called lrmp) Red sea deployment has streched the IN resources, this situation was not war gamed, the area of operation is vast , this concept needn't had to have waited for houthis.
Top echelons of IA have taken lot of hit for strategic/tactical planning mostly coin related, however IN admirals were insulated from criticism.

they were living in a cocoon of outdated concepts but kudos to them they adapted quickly.Happy however for quick learning, however i believe there is a lot of eu / us training guidance behind the enhanced capabilities.

For houthis the concept of chai biscoot session should be adapted to chai khat session.

In a remarkable display of #Jointness & #Integration, an IAF C-17 aircraft executed a precision Airborne Drop of two Combat Rubberised Raiding Craft (CRRC) boats, along with Indian Navy MARCOS in Arabian Sea in support of ongoing anti piracy Op Sankalp. Flying for almost 10 hrs to an area 2600 kms off the Indian Coast, the Op was carried out to rescue crew of bulk carrier vessel MV Ruen. The ship was hijacked by Somali pirates near Yemeni island of Socotra recently. Working seamlessly with
@indiannavy, the mission was successful with all the 17 crew on-board recovered safely. #HarKaamDeshKeNaam

wow, its so easy to get manpads these days.....c17 is clearly a big target in that view? Also daytime para dropping also seems a bit risky from that pic but they are pros, so probably considered all intel and plans.

My guess is ship was already secured by the time of the drops to add extra security and also chance to train in tandem with IN?

Need to work with Eu/uk to arrange trial and incarceration in waters near Somalia, trial back in India will be costly and no point in bringing them to India, most of the hostages will not be available to depose.

Will it not be cost effective for IN/IAF to fly from French/ US bases in Dijibouti.

Isnt airdropping risky in a hostile situation? What if the zoomalis started firing at the troopers while landing?
I mean, airdropping inside hostile territory surrounded by the enemy is kind of the job description of SF.

Somali pirates don't engage in suicide missions, they are doing it for profit, not for some book & post-death fantasies.

French need India as much and more than India need french in Indian Ocean , the "strategic special partnership" is decades old, there is a reason why France supplies cutting edge rafales, submarine , space/ Nuclear tech to India (apartment from money).

With US there is LEMOA, anyway, IN is working in coordination with US in the region.

This is hardly believable in this case, no one will risk a plane and prestige and not to mention sloppy way to lose trained lives against ragtags assuming they won't shoot nor have manpads....I think ship was sanitized by the time they were airdropped and it was done to augment forces more than likely.

Few things we are overlooking -
  • MARCOS team from INS Kolkata probably already collected intel about number of pirates & their weapons.

  • Airdrop was pretty far from the main ship (obviously), around ~1km if not more. Could have they shot at the paratroopers/C17, probably, but also to remember a MARCOS team & INS Kolkata was already deployed nearby, they can give cover-fire.

  • C17, again, was flying pretty high & far. They are big giants hence it may seem they are close, but bullets from Ak-47 won't even reach it.

  • It makes no sense to airdrop more troops (for what exactly) AFTER sanitization of the ships. If they just really wanted more forces VBSS / Seamen can help as well. We tend to forget Seamen/Airmen get equivalent training in firearms as of a Army soldier.

Ofcourse we are speculating but additional equipment was probably needed and so is the need for the additional drops and also possibly working together in real scenario but in an area ripe with missiles and manpads so easily distributed by Iran and west now which have a range of 4 to 6km and during day time.....odds are they were not the first ones and arrived after some reasonable safety checks were in place. If it is a high value mission like war or an op that is mission critical then sure as you said SF mission especially paras units are trained for exactly that. These are missions where PR stunts or stupid risks should never occur and to cost any lives on our side, I hope they think the same way.

ONe more thing, just load them on donghies and send them on their way with a bullet in knee...or drop them like its hot. Bringing them back to Bharat is nonsense....probably they signed some cucked rules of freeworld nonsense
