TransNusa Airlines CEO Datuk Bernard Francis has said the COMAC ARJ21 has exceeded expectations in its early days at the Indonesian carrier. TransNusa became the first foreign operator of a COMAC aircraft in April of this year.

TransNusa's ARJ21 impresses
Speaking on a media call on Wednesday, Francis said the China-made regional jet has "outperformed itself" in its first few months of service. Since launching its inaugural ARJ21 flight on April 18th, TransNusa has been operating the COMAC jet at a much higher daily utilization rate than the average airline in China.

The ARJ21 has risen to the test, achieving an on-time performance (OTP) of 90% or above in the past three months. Load factors on the jet have been steadily increasing too, rising from 87% in May to 92% in July, demonstrating customer confidence.

From an operational perspective, TransNusa said the ARJ's advantages over other regional jets include its highly-integrated avionics system and ergonomic, crew-centered design. Despite its lower capacity compared to its Airbus A320 fleet, the airline favors a lower-capacity, higher-frequency model to give its passengers more flight timings throughout the day, adding that it can fill 95 seats at all hours of the day.
...
TransNusa received its first ARJ21 in December before the second arrived in June - the airline placed an order for 30 of the jets back in 2021, with all deliveries expected through 2026.

Future C919 operator?
CEO Francis added TransNusa would be open to becoming the first international operator of COMAC's C919, given its satisfaction with the ARJ21. The medium-haul narrowbody completed its first revenue flight with China Eastern Airlines in May, although only two C919s have been put into service, both with China Eastern.

COMAC says it has attracted over 1,200 orders for the aircraft - this includes a recent order from Irish lessor AerCap, suggesting the C919 may attract more attention than first thought from overseas buyers.

Malaysian expansion
TransNusa recently announced the launch of its second international route - Jakarta to Johor Bahru - starting September 9th, which will operate five times weekly before upping to a daily flight in November. The outbound service will depart Jakarta at 12:30 and arrive in Johor Bahru at 15:00, while the return leg will depart at 15:30 and land in Jakarta at 16:20 on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

It is very interesting to see Japanese viewpoint on the C919:

One of the deciding factors on Japan giving up on the Mitsubitshi Space Jet was the extreme difficulties in getting a Western safety certificate. Basically, Japan gave the West power to decide the fate of a critical Japanese project -- and why would the West allow a rival?
