Generally acknowledged as the largest airplane in the world, the single Antonov An-225 is the world's heaviest aircraft ever (maximum takeoff weight greater than 640 tons) and the largest heavier-than-air aircraft (in length and wingspan) ever entering operational service
I remember during early 90s when Energia-Buran was launched and Buran was shown atop this thing. Wish we had our own planes of this kind.

An-124 is better overall, though.

@The enlightened, nah man while it's true that Ukrainians don't have enough money lying around, I don't think they need semi strategic air-lifters like AN-70 in justifiable numbers anyway.

@Akim, How many AN-70 were required by Ukrainian AF and Ukraine had gone ahead with program solo if conditions were different?

Total - three units. One already in the AF, the two work. These aircraft, one built for the Russian one - for Ukraine. All is scheduled to -10 units. (3 AN-70 + 7 AN-188).
AN-70 (AN-188), far fewer C-17.

Constitution of India? What does Constitution of India has to do with arms purchase?

Constitution speaks of how the President and PM is to be elected. How a Defence Minister to be appointed. How the armed forces' personnel and officer corps to remain under the command of President who is to act according to the advice of PM and cabinet. Where does it say that how to acquire weapons for Armed forces?

Purchasing of weapon is the prerogative of the Govt. and they go on to do so by the policy set by themselves. The policy can be transparent for the accountability reason and to keep their image clean. However, they are not bound to do anything in open. Btw, the purchase of all the russian stuff is through a process which is same as FMS.

seems un verified info .. IAF clears that No more C 17 for current 5 year term.. They can talk about C 17 later 2017 or 2016 , when next five year plan starts.. meantime all C 17 will be sold out

is there an option to buy 2nd hand C 17s. Looks like we have missed the bus as the production is closing down.Or is there some agreement with Boeing that we do not know of.

Why not buy from US armed forces itself .....

I had heard that US armed forces sell their planes once their shell life is over

The C-17 production line is closing. Where are these 6 coming from? Other than the USAF stocks I don't see an option.

IAF clears proposal to buy three C 17; Boeing says only one plane left to sell



The Indian Air Force appears to have taken too long to push through a Rs 8,100 crore proposal to buy three newBoeing C-17 transport aircraft. The American manufacturer simply does not have that many aircraft to sell anymore, having pledged four of the last five C-17s in its production line to Qatar.

After months of efforts, the air force, at a Services Capital Acquisition Plan meeting on July 31, managed to push through the proposal to add three aircraft to its existing fleet of 10 Boeing C-17s that were ordered in 2011. Officials said the proposal is likely to be taken up by the high powered Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) shortly.

However, Boeing officials have gone on record to say that after signing the contract with Qatar the company is left with just one C-17 for sale. With its production facility for the aircraft at Long Beach in shut-down mode, the company has already halted the production line.

Boeing had five C-17 aircraft to sell when the air force first moved the proposal in April, as ET had first reported.

Officials said the air force could get committed aircraft from US inventory or retracted orders of a third country, but the chances of this happening are slim. A solution cannot be ruled out, they said, given that the deal is being processed under the Foreign Military Sales pact.

In April, the air force had impressed upon the government the need to induct three more of the very heavy transport aircraft because the planes have been involved in several rescue operations, including aid to earthquake hit Nepal, since their induction in 2013.

As per the 2011 contract, which was worth $4.7 billion, India had an option clause to purchase six additional C-17s over its order of ten. However, a paucity of funds never saw the follow-on order being processed.

Option clause ... Subject to availability ?

Why only three why not six more ? Perhaps to test out USA supplying to us and also how system works when goods not available ...

If they cannot supply 3 why they might not supply parts ... Why they might not supply full config ... Why what happens in emergency. I imagine this to have a good outcome for both USA and India ... Its like said "a solution cannot be ruled out"

How India lost last batch of Unsold C-17s Globemaster to others



In 2009, India by placing orders for only 10 C-17 Globe master cargo aircraft, became Second biggest Operator of the type. Original agreement also had an option for 6 aircrafts as follow up option, the option which India wanted to finalize in the 13th five-year plan (2017–2022).

But by 2013 it was clear that Boeing with lack of orders coming from its biggest C-17 operator which was USAF had decided to close its final assembly plant in Long Beach, California by 2015.

Boeing had a firm order of 12 aircrafts and went on to produce further 10 more C-17 aircrafts from its own funds for possible sale to existing C-17 fleet operators and thus all existing operators were informed about last 10 remaining unsold C-17s put up for Sale.

By Early 2014, Two C-17s were picked up by Kuwaiti Air Force, One by Royal Canadian Air Force and by end of 2014 it was clear that Boeing had found customer for Two more C17s which were later ordered by Royal Australian Air Force.

By Early 2015 it was clear that Boeing had only 5 unsold C-17 left and even after repeated reminders to Indian air force and Ministry of Defence officials by Boeing, Indian Red tape and Bureaucracy could not judge urgent matter at hand and take a call on pending request of Indian air force to pick up remaining 5 C-17s.

By June 2015, Qatari Emiri Air Force decided to double its fleet of 4 C-17s purchased in 2009 and agreed to purchase 4 C-17s of the remaining 5 unsold C-17s from Boeing.By the time, Services Capital Acquisition Plan meeting cleared IAF’s proposal to buy three new Boeing C-17 transport aircraft, Boeing had only one unsold C-17 at its disposal.

It is still unclear how remainder of two C-17s will be acquired by India but with other fleet operators having even smaller fleet of C-17s at their disposal, it is likely India will approach USAF which currently operates 223 C-17 aircrafts for possible resale from its inventory, last batch of C-17 were inducted by USAF in 2013.

Induction of C-17 was declared as a game changer and an enabler for IAF, C-17 provided tremendous flexibility in terms of operational response options to IAF. The long-range, heavy-lift capability allowed commanders to induct troops, squadrons, relocate forces as well as shift forces between theatres rapidly. The C-17 formed an extremely important component of the strategic airlift capability and reach of the IAF, Which were showcased in multiple Disaster relief operations it was involved in.
