why can't the Indian army just go ahead and accept the Arjun happily rather than always asking for a change here or there"¦"¦"¦its not that the T-90 is perfect but they just seem to fawn over it. for the record, russian tanks (other than in the battle of kursk) don't have the best combat record. Arjun mk-2 may (operative word being may) not be the best tank around but a) its more than capable against anything the Pakistani army has (the only one with which we might have a potential tank battle) and b) the tank has the capability to evolve into something really good

Russian T-90 or even up grade T-72. They all belong in a junk yard. Army has been over the years covering up all the short comings of those tanks. No nation can fight a prolonged war without its tanks, fighters and naval vessels built indigenously. Russians have been over charging the nation for their tanks and greasing the palms of Netajis and the army brass to sabotage local production.Indian ARMY is used to Russian Hardware and it is not so easy to convince them to make use of indigenous equipment.. How ever it is immense hard work of ARJUN Team and hope their efforts do not go in vain.. above all there are lot of fans for ARJUN MBT including me who wants to see it in arsenal of Indian army.. Indigenous is only solution to make Army much stronger

indian army's armour directorate needs a mindset change.they need to accept indegeneous products like arjun without trying to make it the best of the best and slowly phase out old russian tanks like t-72 and t-90 which even the russians are replacing but our army is ordering in large numbers.

Upgraded Arjun tank undergoes final trials in Pokhran

JAISALMER: The upgraded version of main battle tank Arjun is undergoing final testing in Pokhran field firing range. The tank, Arjun Mark-II, is being tested for different parameters. The first test will examine its missile firing ability while the second one will look into its automotive aspects ie, its movement ability especially with added load. The Army and the DRDO are jointly conducting these trials for the past few days.

The successful testing will pave the way for production of upgraded Arjun. In all, 124 tanks of the first series have been produced so far. The Army has two armoured regiments which have Arjun I tanks and both the regiments are deployed in the western sector.

The tank is produced by Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment near Chennai.

A major modification on the new version of the tank is its missile firing capability. The new LAHAT missile is primarily meant for targeting armoured vehicles and fortifications over extended ranges.

The automotive trials will test the new suspension of the tank designed to handle up to 70 tonnes of weight. The engine will be from the same German parentage.

The upgraded version has 89 improvements over its predecessor. These include long-range missile firing capabilities, panoramic sights with night vision, enhanced weapon penetration, digital control, better hunter-killer capability, improved auxiliary power unit (APU), better communication equipment and navigation aid. The tank will have frontal explosive reactive armour (ERA) to protect against incoming missiles, said Col SD Goswami, defence spokesperson.

The ongoing final trials of Arjun Mark II will mainly focus on 19 parameters after army recommendation, said DRDO spokesperson Ravi Gupta. A successful trial at Pokhran firing range would mean green signal for production of 124 Arjun Mark IIs at Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi. These will supplement the 124 Arjun Mark I already in service.

It does not really matter what the range of the Lahat is and how good the Arjun Mark 2 really is. The reasons the Americans have succeeded a lot in tank warfare et al is by repeated and enhanced training. The Indian army instead of always saying what changes they want is take delivery of the tanks and put them through repeated training/simulated war games. As the saying goes, the more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war.

The important part though is where is the funds going to come for these trainings as the defence forces always get the raw end of the stick (in their opinion) so they wanna stick to capital expenditures. Although I read in article somewhere that due to delays in new capital purchases (because of scams everyone is afraid :)), part of defence budgeted funds were returned. Why not use them to train our army better

Capex cannot be diverted to revex heads, it defeats the whole purpose of budgeting. In crunch times, unused capex disappears faster than a toupee off a bald man's head in a tornado. The instructions around my workplace were to immediately create commitments as soon as capex arrived, but that required a bit of planning in advance. The accountant is like a monster to people working in procurement and projects, "finish off your capex or the accountant will eat it away mid project" :)

Few basic things you missed out is, Better system enhance training and safety so does effectiveness ,The Units armed with Arjun have same training but enhance ..

For example, Arjun crews not only active in day but also at night without turning there engines on, There time over battlefield is also longer as the tank has more space for logistics and tools, With induction of MK2 the training will be modified according to there equipments ..

======================

As for training, you seem to know better on US army but little or no idea about Indian Army, Afaik your flag is India ..

Indian Army conduct annual mass exerciser multiple regiments Of Army and Infantry with IAF, Besides that there are firing maneuvers conducted in local within an Regiment, So there is no way there is a lack of training ..

What concerning is the hardware which restrict training beyond 80s at best..

It does not really matter what the range of the Lahat is and how good the Arjun Mark 2 really is.
