I thought using Elta 2052 AESA radar was a done deal and that was why IAF agreed. But now with tender and competitions couldn't it drag on like MMRCA tender ?
The first Indian Air Force aircraft with AESA radars will be the Jaguar fighter that is being upgraded to the DARIN 3 version. The first Jaguar with the new radar is expected to fly in January. The contract to equip 58 Jaguars with AESA radars had gone to Israel’s ELTA, making it the frontrunner for the LCA Mk 1A project as well.
See this line. Our journalist are good enough to confuse anyone.... :).

LCA-Tejas Admin on Facebook says SP3 has not yet joined squadron Services. Do we have some problems till SP3 as it made it's first flight couple of months back.
It takes another couple of months for any SP to undergo flight and ground test after getting rolled out from production/ assembly line. So induction takes time.

ADA cannot be seen to be going through a single vendor procurement hence they have to go for a global bid as per DPP but the EL/M-2052 is easily the frontrunner, there is next to no chance it won't be selected.

HAL floats radar tender for its Light Combat Aircraft

NEW DELHI: The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has floated a limited tender for the purchase of AESA (active electronically scanned array) radars for an under-development Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas' from global aviation firms.

"The tender in the form of Expression of Interest (EoI) was floated on Wednesday to five of the global aviation technology firms," a top HAL source said.

The EoI was floated by the Aviation Research and Design Centre (ARDC), one of the 10 design centres of HAL, which is engaged in the design and development of LCA 'Tejas', source added.

The source said Israel is a front-runner in the race, along with a firm from the United States.

The India head of one of the contender companies told IANS on the condition of anonymity: "We have been in touch with the HAL for the last two years. We have given them an extensive presentation on the matter."

The HAL has been engaging with global manufacturers vis-a-vis the AESA radars.

"The imported radar will require customisation to suit the LCA's requirements and this will be done jointly by the ARDC and the vendor," the source added.

"It is not yet clear whether some of the radars will be manufactured in India or be a totally off-the-shelf purchase," he added.

By current estimates, around 100 radars are expected to be procured through this tender.

An AESA radar detects flying objects through electronic steering of radio waves. The advanced radars are considered significantly better than mechanical scanning radars.

The Bengaluru-based Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing AESA radar for Tejas Mark II. The LRDE is expected to deliver the radars to the HAL by 2018.

The government last month cleared a proposal for the purchase of 83 LCA MK1As for the Indian Air Force.

According to an earlier plan, LCA Mk-II were to be fitted with AESA radars. The Mk1A, a stopgap version of the aircraft to replenish depleting fighter squadron strength of the Indian Air Force, has been cleared for fitment with imported AESA radars.

Indigenous Tejas received its 'Release to Service Certificate', also known as Initial Operational Clearance-II, in December 2013. The Initial Operational Clearance-1 for the fighter jet was achieved in January 2011.

In July, the HAL delivered first two of these aircraft for IAF's Flying Daggers 45, the first LCA squadron. Subsequently, the third aircraft was delivered to the IAF. The squadron is located in Bengaluru.

The HAL is currently manufacturing eight Tejas per year and by 2018 the manufacturing capacity is expected to be doubled.

I think this is fake news, it takes months for radar to get certified for a plane and on top that there is missile testing, if ADA/HAL wants to change radar for Tejas they would have done it ages ago...

So no worries ELTA 2052 is fixed for MK 1A and ELTA 2032 for MK 1

PS. I heard that we have worked with IAI(couple of years) to improve ELTA 2052 (T/R modules and cooling) for our use. Can anyone confirm what I've heard is pure bs.... or did we really made some changes

Elta Systems will supply the radar for all future versions of India's Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA), after the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) subsidiary was selected by Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL).

The company's ELM-2032 fire-control radar is installed on prototypes of the Indian-developed fighter, and deliveries will continue as series production starts. According to Elta, it also has been chosen as sole supplier for additional future versions of the Tejas; Israeli sources suggest this could involve using its active electronically scanned array ELM-2052 sensor. They suggest that strong ties between HAL and IAI could see additional Israeli equipment installed on the fighter.

India's air force has announced plans to order 80 more LCA in an improved Mk1A configuration, following an earlier order for 40 Tejas jets.

This EOI is either to tag a transparency label on the purchase of EL 2052 which is more or less completed atleast for Jagaur. Or HAL is trying to push ELTA to its place -- which has gone greedy(allegedly) in some manner.

Apart from two options -- in which former seems as more likely to be the case-- there is no other to guess of because Tejas has just selected Python 5 in addition to earlier section of a BVRAAM called Derby. It is absolutely not intelligent to change MMR with one of different origin which in almost cases require changing BVRAAM atleast.

India Seeks Global Ties for Its Light Combat Aircraft Mark-1A Program
By: Vivek Raghuvanshi, December 16, 2016
NEW DELHI — India has floated global bids to procure state-of-the-art active electronically scanned array radars and electronic warfare self-protection jammer pods for the forthcoming modified version of the indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft Mark-1A aircraft.

Under the ministry of defence's directions, India's sole combat aircraft manufacturer, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., on Thursday released global requests for quotations for the equipment. Two systems will be selected by April next year, according to a top MoD defense production official.

"We cannot wait for Indian companies to develop and build these proven systems, and they will be bought off-the-shelf from overseas," the MoD official added.

Under a fast-track program, around 100 AESA radars will be bought at a cost of $1.85 billion million, and bids have been issued to Elta of Israel, US companies Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, SAAB of Sweden, Thales of France and Rosoboronoexport of Russia.

In addition, 100 electronic-warfare jammer pods will be procured from overseas at a cost of $200 million, and bids have been sent to Elta, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, SAAB, Thales, Rosoboronoexport, Indra of Spain and Leonardo-subsidiary Finmeccanica of Italy.

All global bids will be asked to submit price quotations before Feb. 15, and the final selection will be made before April.

HAL will launch serial production of the fighter jet 2018.
