    BEIJING/NEW DELHI, Oct 15:

China expressed concern on Wednesday after India announced plans to build a road along the remote eastern part of their disputed border, saying it hoped India would not "further complicate" the festering disagreement.

China defeated India in a brief war in 1962 and the border has remained unresolved since, despite 17 rounds of talks. The two armies cannot even agree on where the Line of Actual Control, or the ceasefire line following the fighting in 1962, lies, leading to face-offs between border patrols.

In September, India eased curbs on building roads and military facilities within 100 km (62 miles) of the contested border in remote Arunachal Pradesh, so as to hasten construction of some 6,000 km (3,730 miles) of roads.

The move came as Chinese President Xi Jinping visited India, in a bid to defuse the deep distrust between both countries, despite growing trade and business ties.

A senior official in the Indian home ministry's border management department said the ministry was seeking cabinet approval for the road in Arunachal Pradesh and had preliminary support from the prime minister's office.

"The minister of state has conceived the idea of building a road that could be about 2,000 km (1,240 miles) long. The project has not been given cabinet approval but the preliminary nod from the PMO has come," said the official who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

"China has already spread their network of roads and rail network near the border. Whatever we make on our territory should not be a concern of China."

Asked about the road plan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the government needed to "further verify the situation".

"The border issue between China and India is a problem left over by the colonial past. Both China and India need to work together to solve this problem," he told a daily news briefing.

"Before the border problem is solved, we hope the Indian side will not take any action that could further complicate the relevant issue, so as to preserve the current situation of peace and stability in the border area and create conditions for the final settlement of the border issue."

Last month, India and China agreed to pull back troops ranged against each other on a remote Himalayan plateau on the other side of the country from Arunachal Pradesh, ending their biggest face-off on the disputed border in a year.

The two armies had mobilised about 1,000 soldiers each in Ladakh, each accusing the other of building military infrastructure in violation of a pact to maintain peace until a resolution of the 52-year territorial row.

India to build 1800-km highway along China border in Arunachal

To counter China, India is all set to embark on an ambitious road project along the McMahon Line in Arunachal Pradesh. The proposed Indo-China frontier highway, that will be monitored by the Home Ministry will run parallel along the China border and will be 1,800 km long. The government is also planning an industrial corridor in the state which also happens to be the parliamentary constituency of MoS (Home Affairs) Kiren Rijiju.

The ministry has set the ball rolling and has asked the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to prepare a detailed project report. “The MoRTH has been asked to submit it at the earliest. It will also include the cost and other financial implications of the project,” said a senior MHA official.

The proposed highway will pass through Tawang, East Kameng, Upper Subansiri, West Siang, Upper Siang, Dibang Valley, Desali, Chaglagam, Kibito, Dong, Hawai and Vijaynagar in bordering areas of Arunachal Pradesh. The Government has already relaxed environmental clearances for border area projects.

“The construction of the road will be a huge challenge considering the rough and hostile terrain, mostly snow-fed, through which it would pass, and will be the biggest single infrastructure project in the history of India with an estimated cost of over Rs 40,000 crore,” Rijiju said in Itanagar.

A similar project — the Trans-Arunachal highway, announced by the UPA government in 2008 to connect the middle of the state — is moving at a snail’s pace with only 230 km of 2,400 km project completed so far.

“The aim is to construct a seamless travel from one part of the state to another. As the terrain is not smooth along the border areas, we will intersect the highway with tunnels so that the link is not broken anywhere,” said a senior MHA official.

Officials said other stakeholders like Defence Ministry and Ministry of North East Affairs will also be roped in for the project. “Once the frontier highway takes off, the industrial corridor will also be constructed in southern Arunachal. All the three projects will then be interconnected,” said the officer.

    Just ignore them.

Or tell them that we are concerned that they are building a road somewhere in Shanghai.

Give ridiculous responses to ridiculous "concerns."

Ah ! Does that mean New Delhi is yours and Beijing is ours ?

Or are you saying that military might will decide the borders ?

Is there an end to this ? Or Chinese will reach New York to say "the border is not decided "?

When were Chinese south of Himalayas in the existence of humanity ?
Or you want to replace the British to be new rulers of India ?

Tibet and Tibetans are not part of China. It is forcible occupied by Chinese.

The question of India and China agreeing on a border is moot. India does not share a border with China. India shares border with Tibet and East Turkestan. Since these two states are occupied by PRC, so India and PRC have a de facto border.

    +1

    Well said.

Everybody? You mean Indians as well? If yes, then you cannot be more wrong. In one of the very first moves of Mr. Modi, he appointed a senior army personnel to overlook the infrastructure build up and militarization of north-east India. This shows that he had this in mind since before he was elected as PM and he takes this issue very seriously. He hence will not let this go.
