@ lixun Both F-104 and F-4 were designed around the J79 engine which was already existing and mature during both these aircrafts' development. The earlier F-104 in particular was fabled for being built around the J79 engine that according to pilots it was like riding the engine itself.

Engine tech has already advanced so much that a single engine is all you need. A B777 can fly with only 1 engine.

Engine is the most critical component and perhaps most expensive and difficult to develop in a fighter hence, a fighter is supposed to be designed around an engine and not the other way around. Russians on the other hand in their 5th gen fighters are doing the opposite.

Plus with that intake design, it's hard to make a bigger nose section that can accommodate bigger radars (Russian electronics tend to be bulkier than Western analogues so they need bigger housing). It's interesting how Sukhoi can install a capable Russian radar with that limited nose area.
