Indian Air Force: News & Discussions

I gather that Greece is trying to reduce the number of types it has in service. Reducing its fleet by one type by retiring M2K only to take on an extra type by buying Tejas Mk1A does not reduce the number of types in service. What makes you think that Greece would want 2 billion or more for...

If the Greeks no longer want them, make them an offer they cannot refuse!

Time is of the essence for IAF where fighters are concerned, isn't it? How long between IAF/GoI deciding to order an Mk1A and it being delivered to IAF?

I suggest ordering another 1/2 squadrons of Mk1A and accelerating production. Production of 24 a year would be possible 2026? onwards. Build up export marketing and sales and after-sales support expertise and get into the export business with Mk1A. Will stand India in good stead for exporting...

IIRC UAE could not agree a price with the potential buyer of UAE's M2K's. I think that was India.

UAE potential disposal of M2K reported in IDRW in 2020. India failed to take advantage, it seems. https://idrw.org/uae-mirage-2000-last-chance-for-india-to-grab-these-magnificent-jets/

Yes, they ordered over 50, I think. Didn't India talk to UAE about buying them some years ago or was it Qatar?

It is a shame that early tranche 1 UK and German Typhoons are not the same. India might have been able to buy enough to stand up 4-5 squadrons at a very good price in short order. Would have been good to fill the fighter numbers gap up to the 2030's.

If they were smart GoI would have changed many things many years ago. About those MiG-29's, is India going to keep dithering around or buy the things?

In 1990's there was no Indian alternative. Now there are potential alternatives. Tejas: I am guided by many contributors who say that IAF does not want more than the number ordered. Good little fighter IMO but with short range and load carrying capacity (because it's an LCA). Mk2 has greater...

Tried a few years back according to my memory. I recall that the price wanted was unacceptably high. But now (1) UAE may not want so much (b) India is in urgent need of fighters so they might be able to do a deal. Looks like a way to mitigate a big problem for India to me. Anyone disagree? My...

While I agree that steps to turn Kaveri into a useable engine for Tejas Mk1 should have been taken, is there any point now? The only application would be Tejas and by the time it went into production most Tejas would have already been built. It would not have sufficient thrust to power Mk2 or...

I find it laughable. GOI seems to have put a millstone around HAL's neck - and many others. As someone who once shut a business down due to late payment by an obscure research department of a UK PSU because it meant I could not pay my suppliers according to contract, I sympathise with HAL...

I gather that IAF will retire 4 squadrons of MiG-21 by 2025. What is the schedule for Tejas Mk1A and MWF? Is it Mk1A rollout 2022 first flight 2022 production start 2023 first deliveries 2024 MWF rollout 2022 first flight 2023 production start 2026 first deliveries 2027 So in 2025 there will...

I think that Indfags should take the better deal offered by the Britfags and the Francfags. At the moment the deal offered by RRfags seems a better proposition than the deal offered by Safranfags.

I'm curious. What does the second Tejas squadron raised actually do? As far as I know it has just a couple of aircraft. Perhaps some more were delivered without that being announced?

Blimey, looks like Times of India thinks a big thing with a rotor is a fighter plane! Or at least a fighter helicopter (as written also). What it says is not interesting to me. Landing a real fighter plane might be. PS Which fighter(s) would they try landing on the strip in the picture?
