    Light tanks for Indian Army

I have already stated that a light tank that cannot match an MBT is of no use be it any terrain configurations. It is like stating that pistol can take on soldier equipped with assault rifles.

Where can I see the technical specification. If it has the same calibre gun as an MBT that is interesting. Where can I see the add ons that can defeat MBT shells of various types/ Really keen to know about this tank and how it has been kept light so that it can be carted underslung by a...

So it is basically a replacement for ICVs and not a tank by a long shot. Understandable.

    Light tanks for Indian Army

In what operation scenario is a light tank to be used? It maybe helidroppable, but once on the ground in the plains or deserts, where tanks are used, will it have the capabilities to counter MBTs? Does it have the capability in armour protection and armament to counter an MBT? If it is...

    Light tanks for Indian Army

The basic difference is the 'staying power' on an objective & fighting trough the objective. This staying power is given by the weapon array that the armoured vehicle has. An APC is basically a battle taxi, while the ICV being better armed can assist the infantry that it is carrying to fight...

    20 L = 20 Lancers.(Bengal Lancers) Cav is Cavalry. I believe Pakistan also has 20 Lancers.

Even PT 76 got bogged down in the mud of East Pakistan and became sitting ducks.

    Light tanks for Indian Army

Yes, IIRC AMX 13s were there. 20L, 8 CAV They were in the independent armoured squadrons IIRC PT 76 was with 45 CAV and 63 CAV. It is long past and so it is all IIRC.

MBTs or AFV that are heavy will have problems operating on mountain roads and tracks. Notice the width of the road. Apart from the weight, the width will also matter. especially when the road turns sharply. The Himalayas is a young range and has not settled as yet.

    Light tanks for Indian Army

PT 76 was the last of the Light Tanks used by the Indian Army. A main battle tank (MBT), also known as a battle tank or universal tank, is a tank that fills the heavy direct fire role of many modern armies. They were originally conceived to replace the light, medium, heavy and super-heavy...

    Light tanks for Indian Army

Is this as per IA requirement or a DRDO initiative? While one can helidrop/ heliland such tanks, what is its staying power in a tank infested country? How is it different from a PT 76? PT 76 was amphibious in addition and hence greater flexibility. Does this tank have such capabilities?

    Light tanks for Indian Army

Eastern Command's thrust into East Pakistan. India had one T-55 tank regiment in the northern sector supporting the XXXIII Corps' offensive in the Hilli-Bogra area, with one PT-76 regiment in the western area supporting the II Corps' thrust. t least thirty PT-76 tanks were destroyed or...

    Light tanks for Indian Army

Any idea where it will be operative and in what role? If we are going in for Light tanks, why did we discontinue with the PT 76, which was not only a light tank, but also amphibious.

    Light tanks for Indian Army

Why do we require Light Tanks? They have no chance on the battlefield. The only chance they have is in COIN, but would we use tanks in such a situation? Goes against the policy.

    Light tanks for Indian Army

The APCs are battle taxis. The IFV or ICV (Infantry Combat Vehicle) carry troops and are used for effective assault, as and when required as per the tactical plan. The main difference would be in the armament/ which increases the 'staying power' (on the objective) and giving fire support...

I am not mocking you. I am also all Army, Navy and Airforce (RAF and decorated posthumous) with one Chief of the Army as a relative! However, if you were in Ladakh for one year because of your father, then that is incorrect and not allowed by current army instructions. The problem is not your...

    Light tanks for Indian Army

You could not have lived for a year in Ladakh even if you father was the Corps Cdr. It is a non family station. You could only be there on a visit. If some families can be there for a year, I sure would love to know! You lived there for a year? I lived there for two years and even before that...
