The price is excessive a multi billion dollar deal for a few thousand pieces.

IMHO, MISTRAL-2, IGLA-S & CHIRON should be real contenders. They use IR based homing.

Starstreak & RBS-70/NG uses Laser based homing.

Disadvantages of using Laser based homing

1. The guidance laser may be detected after the missile is fired, if the target aircraft is equipped with a suitable passive laser warning system. In contrast, to detect a passively guided Infrared homing missile requires MAWS detectors with significant disadvantages: radar-based closure-detecting style MAWS radiate an easily-detectable signal which both reveals the aircraft and may be used as an auxiliary homing signal by AA missiles, and Infrared launch signature detector-based MAWS tend to be subject to a high false alarm rate which reduces attention paid them by the pilot.

2. Battlefield obscurants such as smoke can degrade the ability of the missile operator to see the target, and could potentially interfere with the guidance laser.

3. The training level of the operator is critical since, unlike infrared guided missiles, the operator has to track the target exactly with the sighting unit aimpoint (SACLOS). If the aircraft detects the targeting laser, it has the whole period of the missile flight time to engage in avoidance maneuvers, which adds additional challenge to the missile operator's target-tracking task.

I am still amazed that we are ready to spend billions of dollars on something we
should be developing indigenously. If we are making 32 different smerch warheads
and all diiferent short range long range missiles, why do we have to waste money
on this?

Aero India 2013: VSHORAD contenders square off - News - Shephard

Aero India 2013: VSHORAD contenders square off
08 February 2013 - 13:34 by Beth Stevenson in Bangalore

Contenders for the Indian Army's Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORAD) requirement presented their respective offerings at the Aero India exhibition as a downselect decision nears.

Both MBDA and Saab displayed their missile systems, the Mistral MANPADS and RBS-70 NG respectively, at the show in Bangalore. It is believed that Rosoboronexport is also bidding for the award.

The companies are awaiting a decision on the downselect for the programme, with MBDA claiming to have completed live firing for the army and Saab saying its tests are still on-going.

Saab's RBS-70 NG is a beam riding system with a Hard 3D short range radar attached to it alongside a C2 system and battery commander terminal. It fires within an 8km range at an altitude of 5km, which exceeds the Indian requirement, according to the company.

Mats Johansson, marketing director for Saab India Technologies, explained that it takes some five seconds to reload the missile and the system is man-portable.

'Of the three systems, the others are fire and forget,' Johansson explained. 'They therefore have a seeker at the front of the system that can be easily jammed. We offer a beam ridden system that is much more difficult to fool.'

However, MBDA considers its fire and forget concept to be an advantage.

'The problem with that [beam riding] is that it takes a fair bit of skill across range,' Mati Hindrekus, marketing communications managers for the company, told Shephard. 'A little twitch off target is magnified to several hundred metres. In our opinion this is not an ideal solution.'

Hindrekus explained that the missile can be loaded in a few seconds, which is a benefit in a VSHORAD environment because operators do not have much time before the missile hits the target and has to be quickly reloaded.

The Indian forces have already purchased the Mistral as it is due to be mounted on the Dhruv light attack helicopter, which will add benefits in terms of the logistics chain if it were selected for VSHORAD.

Johansson said that Saab's bid was submitted in March 2012, and 'we can only guess' when a decision is going to be made regarding a downselect.

why can't drdo complete the trishul project?
Trishul has nothing to do with VSHORADS. Trishul's equivalent is Barak NG or more specifically the Shtil-1, NG has better specs.

We don't have an equivalent development plan for VSHORADS.

It can, But Trishul system have many issue if started now like :

1. Missile Size is very large compare to modern VSHORAD missiles.. ( Not Man-portable )

2. Guidance System is very huge though very advance..

3. The BMP-2 platform with system have very high ground pressure ..

Solve these and there will be an excellent VSHORAD system, But it will take time compare to this RFI which is now in Final stage..

If this RFI crash, It would be logical to continue research on Trishul ..

why can't drdo complete the trishul project?

We already have the Igla-I, Igla-S is the next logical buy for us. Cheap, easy to maintain and use. Highly portable. Very effective.

The rest will simply be expensive and maybe even unnecessary.

Just buy the cheapest.

Re: Indian VSHORADS competition progresses

Indian VSHORADS competition progresses

The massive $6 billion Indian Army very short-range air-defence system (VSHORADS) competition, which looks to contract nearly 1,000 launcher systems and over 6,000 missiles, has progressed into a crucial phase which involves quality assurance tests at Bangalore and a check-out of the electronics systems on the three remaining contenders in Ladakh. The big-ticket bid is currently a three-way fight between the French MBDA Mistral, Sweden's Saab RBS 70 NG and Russia's KBM new generation Igla-S.

Field evaluation trials of all three VSHORADS platforms were conducted in May in Rajasthan (hot weather trials), Visakhapatnam (coastal environmental trials) and Ladakh (high altitude, cold weather trials). All three teams are simulataneously in the country for the critical phases in Bangalore and Ladakh.
