We should actually accept the fact that India failed in UAV Technology. I don’t know what Aatmanirbharta craze we have got? Why don’t we do JV in development of UCAVs? We have only 2 UAV programs Rustom-II and Ghatak rest is part of CATS Programme.

Just look at what Israel and Turkey have achieved, yes they did JVs, they did now they are slowly indigenising their stuff while we mock others.

What’s stopping us in UCAVs?

So why does IAF ignore it? We can’t make our own, its a fact.

This meme of '% of foreign components' should stop, what matters is that they have a production facility and have successfully exported it to multiple countries. At the end it was effective enough for their use case and exports, initially they may have used outsourced equipment but later on they can do more R&D and improve further.

??? It's matter of priority not whether we can or not? We absolutely can make UAV and UCAV but was it our priority in the past? Doesn't seem to be the case, neither IAF nor GOI backed our old projects.

Rustom 1 was a capable platform for its time but where were the orders? Now we have projects like SWIFT, Ghatak and Rustom 2(yeah i know but still we are testing it) so why so passive attitude out of the sudden?

It's good that companies like ideaforge got orders from IA, it will incentivise them for further R&D for better products. For all purposes, SWIFT seemed to be doing good.

We already have CATS warrior system in works too. Considering this among the top priority of IA and IAF both, I would be more optimistic about our situation.

Optimistic is being different than having capabilities on hand. UAVs can save money, patrol time of soldiers/ships in Himalayas etc perhaps we could have detected live movement of Chinese soldiers etc. Pretty sure they were monitoring us through their drones.

We have been left behind in drone tech for quite sometime now. Private sector can be encouraged but ofcouurse the govt is big on talk but being empty vessels. A start up in defence is one of the worst decisions in India today one can take. Despite solutions being shown in every air India, idea forge orders were placed finally cos of Galwan. In this tech, there is nothing to be optimistic.

I don't know what you are on about. You are comparing apples and oranges, rustom - 1 was working years ago, neither IAF nor GOI backed those projects. You must be kidding if you are saying that India doesn't have the capability when college dropouts can make better meme drones, when rustom - 1 which flown in 2009 was a capable platform, it was no different that turkish Bayraktar Tb2, almost same and if our armies and government-backed the project then it would have been way superior system.

It was never about 'we can't' it was always about the 'intent'. Likes of turkey invested in their project and we didn't but now things have changed.

I don't see any reason to be such pessimism considering we already are more or on less on track with likes of SWIFT, Cats warrior system as said by HVT.

Until recently no one seemed serious bout drones and that's why we didn't see any much investment but things are changing, from IA to IAF, their chiefs have stated it time and time again and presence and work of speed up SWIFT, Ghatak, Cats warrior shows that we are in moving in right direction.

Absolute cope, based on what? If the product is good that it doesn't matter if it comes from some established company or a startup.

I gave example of Ideaforge because a private company will always try to maximize and they run on incentives and that deal was a right thing to do. Even if it was some meme amount of money.

Is there any law that forbids our DRDO/DPSUs from selling military ware to other countries?

China sells drones to Middle East countries. Why can't these sarkari guys make something similar and sell them in international market if they have the capabilities?

Blaming GoI and Armed forces for their incompetence is no excuse.
