The second American destroyer in the summer collided with a merchant vessel.
American destroyer John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker in the Strait of Malacca, east of Singapore. This is the second such case in two months.
The collision of an American destroyer with an oil tanker Alnic MC, flying under the flag of Liberia, occurred at 05:24 am local time (00:24 Moscow time). As explained in the US Navy, the destroyer was sent to the port of Singapore after patrolling in the South China Sea.
As a result of a collision with a merchant ship, five American sailors were injured. Four of them were evacuated to a hospital in Singapore with injuries that did not threaten life.
Another ten US servicemen are reported missing.
In the search and rescue operation involved American helicopters Seahawk and Osprey, as well as ships of the naval forces of Singapore and Malaysia.
The oil tanker Alnic MC is about three times larger than the American destroyer.
The photos published by the head of the Malaysian Navy show that as a result of the collision, "John S. McCain" suffered damage to the left part of the stern. "John S. McCain", a missile destroyer of the "Arly Burke" type, Tomahawk missiles are on his arsenal. The destroyer is named after two admirals of the US Navy, John S. McCain the Younger and John S. McCain the Elder, the father and grandfather of Republican Senator John McCain.
As one of the Alnic MC crew members told Reuters, the tanker is carrying nearly 12,000 tons of oil from Taiwan to Singapore. According to him, there was no leakage of oil.
In honor of whom the destroyer is named President of the United States Donald Trump, who just returned to Washington from vacation, commenting on the incident, told reporters: "This is very bad." The second incident for two months on June 16 off the coast of Japan encountered an American destroyer "Fitzgerald" and a container ship ACX Crystal, which was flying the flag of the Philippines. After the clash, seven American servicemen disappeared. Their bodies were found in one of the submerged compartments of the destroyer on 18 June. None of the crew of the container ship was injured.
