I have two question:

1) What happens to old INSAS rifles after we induct AK 203 ?

2) Will we replace INSAS with AK 203 or other rifles such as AK47, AKM, etc and captured rifles from terrorists will also be replaced?

The AK-203 along with the Sig 716, manufactured with by United States-based SIG Sauer will be replacing the INSAS rifles as well as all the AK-47s.

Every caliber has its own use. 5.56 & 7.62 AK are primary caliber, 7.62 nato would be used in specialist roles just like 50 cal AMR and .338 lapua which will enter service in next 5 years.

With the multiple private players ready to manufacture ammo locally, I don’t think old argument of having multiple calibers as a disadvantage doesn’t hold good anymore.

Logistical problems argument also doesn’t hold good anymore, it can be overcome by adopting a new supply chain management policy/system (if current ones are inadequate).

what i meant was all the above mentioned caliber in one infantry battalion
Imho most of the ak 203 will go to counter insurgency units, carbines are meant for the officers to replace 9 mm carbines while the 7.62 NATO will go to front line soldiers in the plains and deserts.

Not every frontline unit is going to ve equipped with Sigs, but only those at Rajasthan, Punjab & Glacier etx where a weapon with long range is a necessity. For rest of the troops in Kashmir, NE and hinterland, range doesnt matter much but stopping power.

Any idea about what do we do of old weapons? In US they have special inventory of old military items known as reserves. They store everything from guns to tanks. Do we have similar facilities? or do we just send old stuff to scrapyard?

There is no prerequisite that 'LMG' has to be belt-fed.
You are right, there is no well defined nomenclature for any type of weapons(in usa, they call assault rifles without stock as "pistols", Thompson and tec9 guns as machine guns coz it fires with open bolt).

recently the US Marines & British Army are all magazine-fed models
I think you are referring to is RPKs and m27 kind of rifles (where standard close bolt rifle is beefed up with thicker barrel).
Not everyone from the military circle is happy about this system using as a standalone lmg, since It is prone to cook offs. That's they still use belt fed systems.

Thats why our army largely rely on belt fed guns and also in future procurements too.

Calling magazine fed, closed bolt weapons as lmgs is like calling super tucano as a fourth gen fighter. You can "technically" call it as a fourth gen fighter, coz it has modern nav and targeting pods, but it still a beefed up prop plane.

Moreover,Machine guns are meant to give sustained fire power, which only a belt fed gun can provide(infinite number of ammo can be linked, but magazines have limits). And open bolt can keep the barrel relatively cool.

That's why rpks and m27s are nowadays considered as squad assault rifle(sar).

There are two scheme of things:

Indian Army will replace INSAS with Sig Sauer 716 to equip all units (for conventional and other roles). The LMG will also be replaced with LMG of same manufacturer. The system operates on 7.62 X 51 (earlier SLR gauge) and production line for that ammunition exist.

Indian Army will adopt Caracal as standard Carbine to replace 9mm Sten Carbine. It operates with 5.56 X 45, the INSAS caliber and assembly line for ammunition exists. To be made by AMU- Kanpur.

For their counter - terrorist / counter insurgency force, that is RR units, Indian Army will be equipped with AK-203. This operates on 7.62 X 39 caliber . Assembly line for ammunition exists Production line being established by OFB at Amethi.
