Russian lawmakers have called for a thorough investigation on the origins of the man-portable missile launcher that was likely used by militants in Syria to shoot down a Russian fighter jet before killing the pilot in a firefight.
"Certainly, we will investigate, including a great many things: from the type of the MANPADS [man-portable air defense system] to the circumstances of the Su-25 downing," Frants Klintsevich, First Deputy chair of Russia's Federal Council Defense Committee, told Interfax.

He hopes that evidence will be available due to the "abundance of UAVs and space surveillance in the area."

As far as military losses go, "the loss of one aircraft is nothing, but politically it has great significance and far-reaching consequences," Klintsevich said. Other lawmakers are concerned about how the militants could have acquired the anti-aircraft weapon. "We have information that the MANPADS used to bring down our jet was brought into Syria from a neighboring country several days ago," MP Dmitry Sablin, coordinator of the Russia-Syria parliamentary friendship group, told Interfax. "Countries from whose territory weapons arrive, that are then used against Russian servicemen, must understand that whis will not go unpunished," he added.

Deputy Head of the State Duma Defense Committee, Yury Shvytkin, told RIA he is inclined to believe that the "MANPADS' origins are linked with Western countries."

A Pentagon spokesperson, interviewed by TASS, has already denied the US sent anti-aircraft weapons to Syria. However, the 2017 defense spending bill, signed under Barack Obama, opened the door for the supply of such weapons to Syrian rebels – a fact that Moscow sounded the alarm over when the bill was inked.

However, it envisages careful vetting of the recipients and extensive paperwork, and the Pentagon has previously said that no such deliveries have actually been made.

In mid-January, a report by the Syrian online outlet Al-Masdar claimed Kurdish forces operating in Syria had received a shipment of MANPADS from the US in an "independent secret deal." The report cited unnamed "opposition sources."

"Igla".The rebels have enough MANPADS (Soviet, Iranian, Chinese). But in order to know the movement of an aircraft, one must possess a radar or have a "mole" with the enemy. Therefore, they successfully fight with the air forces of Assad. A downed Russian attack plane is probably just an exception to the rules.

Su-25 shot down by Al-Nusra but there is no confirmation it was a MANPAD. It could have been a DShK. Su-25 attack run would bring it well within range.

The scene shows, what according to Syrian rebels were fires caused by Russian military plane shot down by rebel forces near Idlib, Syria, reportedly on February 3, 2018, in this still image obtained from social media via Reuters.

Amman/Moscow, February 3

Syrian rebels shot down a Russian warplane on Saturday and killed its pilot on the ground after he ejected from the plane, Russia’s defence ministry and Syrian rebels said.

The SU-25 came down in an area of northern Idlib province that has seen heavy air strikes and fighting on the ground between Syria’s government forces backed by Russia and Iran, and rebel groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad.

Syrians opposed to Assad see Russia as an invading force they blame for the deaths of thousands of civilians since Moscow joined the war on the side of the government in 2015.

The US State Department said it had seen reports about the incident and allegations that the United States provided missiles to groups in Syria.

“The United States has never provided MANPAD missiles to any group in Syria, and we are deeply concerned that such weapons are being used,” said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert. “The solution to the violence is a return to the Geneva process as soon as possible and we call on Russia to live up to its commitments in that regards.”

The Russian plane was shot down over the town of Khan al-Subl near the city of Saraqeb, close to a major highway where the Syrian army and Iranian-backed militias are trying to advance, a rebel source said.

Although the Russian pilot escaped the crash, he was killed by rebels who had tried to capture him, the source said.

Tharir al-Sham, a jihadist group spearheaded by the former Syrian branch of al Qaeda, claimed responsibility for shooting down the plane on social media, saying one of its fighters had scored a direct hit with a shoulder launched anti-aircraft missile.

“This work is the least we can do to revenge our people. Let the criminal invaders know that our skies are not a picnic and they will not pass through without paying a price, God willing,” senior commander Mahmoud Turkomani said in a statement released by the group.

Russia’s Defence Ministry also said that the aircraft was downed by a portable surface-to-air missile. The pilot reported that he had ejected by parachute, it said, and he was later killed on the ground.

“The pilot died in a fight with terrorists,” the ministry said.

Plane wreckage
TASS news agency quoted the Russian Defence Ministry as saying Moscow retaliated with a strike from an undisclosed high-precision weapon that killed more than 30 militants in an area of Idlib province where the plane was downed.

The Syrian opposition released footage on social media that purported to show the wreckage of the plane and the body of the pilot surrounded by fighters.

Rebels said the downed warplane had taken part in strikes that targeted civilian convoys fleeing along a major Syrian highway from villages that the army and foreign militias had overrun.

Syria’s civil war, which is now entering its eighth year, has killed hundreds of thousands of people and driven more than 11 million from their homes.

A Russian plane was blamed for the death of seven civilians and scores of injuries after cars were targeted on the highway, according to a witness and two rebels sources.

Syrian soldiers and Iranian-backed militiamen were now around twelve kilometres from Saraqeb, advancing toward the Damascus-Aleppo highway under cover of heavy Russian air strikes, two opposition sources said.

At least five civilians were killed in Saraqeb city on Saturday, which residents blamed on Russian planes.

Syrians in rebel-held areas say they can distinguish between Russian warplanes and those of the Syrian air force, because the Russian planes fly at higher altitude.

Residents say thousands of people have been forced by air strikes to flee the area, moving further north to the safety of makeshift camps on the Syrian side of the Turkish border.

Russia’s Defence Ministry regularly says it targets only hardline Islamist militants in Syria. Reuters

There is a video where the fire is conducted in ZPU-2, but this is not it. The rupture of the missile is clearly visible.

Iran has decided to expropriate 132 military and civilian Iraqi planes that sought refuge in several Iranian cities in the final phase of first gulf war . The number of the Iraqi planes is much larger than reported earlier, when accounts put the number at 60, including Russian-made MIG fighters and Sukhoi bombers.

Kuwaiti officials said that six of the airplanes that Iran had been holding were Kuwaiti-owned civilian aircraft, which they had been negotiating to get back from Iran.

The Saudi newspaper report said other civilian planes that belonged to Iraq and that are being taken by the Iranians have already been placed at the service of Iran Air under a separate company named Iran Tour.

So was it the Iranian one Su 25 , what about the pilots ?

Combat aviation flies in pairs. There was only one. He did not shoot the heat traps either. Probably Russians believed in their impunity and relaxed.

A Russian pilot downed by rebel fighters in Syria killed himself with a grenade to avoid being captured by the jihadists, Moscow has confirmed.

Video footage filmed by the rebels themselves, sees Major Roman Filipov shouting 'This is for our guys!' before detonating the explosives as the fighters surround him.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that the 33-year-old was 'fighting the rebels until the last minute' and detonated the grenade when they approached.

Maj. Filipov, from Vladivostok, east Russia has been awarded Kremlin's highest honour - the Hero of Russia medal - posthumously.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was too early to say who had supplied the weapons system which rebels had used to shoot down the plane

In a statement seen by Russia Today, the Ministry said the pilot had ejected from his Sukhoi 25SM fighter jet after being hit with a missile from a portable surface-to-air system in Idlib, Syria.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was too early to say who had supplied the weapons system which rebels had used to shoot down the plane, but that it was extremely worrying that such rockets were falling into the hands of 'terrorists.'

After landing, Maj. Filipov remained in radio contact with the Russian airbase in Khmeimim, Syria, and reported shooting and killing two jihadist fighters with his hand gun as they closed in on him.

But realising his situation was hopeless, he pulled the pin on his grenade to kill himself, reportedly killing more rebels in the blast.

'Brave' pilot praised by his teacher
Hero pilot Roman Filipov was 'brave as a lion' and had followed in the footsteps of his father as a combat air force man, it was revealed today.

As the Kremlin saluted him, Russian defence officials vowed to support his widow Olga and their two young children, along with his parents.

The 33 year old had wanted to be a pilot from the moment he first went to school, said his class teacher today.

He came from a military family and his father Nikolay was a decorated air force pilot who flew combat missions during the war in Chechnya.

His mother Elena and younger sister Marina also served in the Russian military.

The director of School No. 85 in Voronezh, Galina Klepikova, said: 'He got mainly the highest marks…

His class teacher Lyudmila Lazareva (pictured) said: 'He was never childish, but adult, serious, reasonable, and balanced. He was among the best'

'Teachers speak of him only well: he was fit, modest, blue-eyed, fair-haired, neat. The boy was fond of sports, he studied well. He dreamed of being a pilot.'

His class teacher Lyudmila Lazareva said: 'He was never childish, but adult, serious, reasonable, and balanced. He was among the best.

'He had a sense of justice. That was how he behaved - he knew what was right.'

When she heard to his heroic death she said: 'I was so shocked. I was just in panic…. For me, my pupils are always children.

'This poor child - that's what I think now.'

His classmate Roman Dudin said his father had been his inspiration.

'When we were studying [at school], there was a conflict in Chechnya and his father took part in hostilities. He was a combat pilot.'

Major Filipov lived with his wife and two children in the Far East off Russia in Chernigovka, Primorsky region.

Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu called on Vladimir Putin to posthumously grant the Su-25 pilot the Hero of Russia honour, the country's highest award.

A spokesman for Shoigu said the defence ministry 'will fully support' his widow and children and also his parents.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: 'The pilot died heroically…. We are proud of our heroes.'

His commanders saw him as a 'brave pilot' who 'enjoyed well-deserved authority in his regiment and amongst his subordinates in the squadron'

A military source said: 'He was brave as a lion and died a hero. We have only pride in him.'

A spokesman said: 'The pilot did his best to keep the plane in the air as long as he could. He managed to report to his commanders he had been attacked with a missile.

'Filipov ejected himself and landed near the terrorists-held village of Tell-Debes. Until the last moments of his life he fought agianst the terrorists with his hand weapon.

'Filipov blew himself up with a grenade after being heavily injured and surrounded by terrorists when the attackers were meters away.'

He was 'an experienced pilot - it was not his first tour in Syria.'

'Major Roman Filipov accomplished dozens of combat missions in Syria with flying colours to destroy international terrorist fighters and escort humanitarian convoys of the Russian centre for reconciliation of opposing sides to populated localities liberated from terrorists.'

His commanders saw him as a 'brave pilot' who 'enjoyed well-deserved authority in his regiment and amongst his subordinates in the squadron.'

He was a graduate of the Krasnodar Military Aviation Institute, and had climbed every step of the career ladder, from a senior pilot to a squadron deputy commander, said the defence ministry.

Maj. Filipov's last words caught on the video, filmed by the Al-Qaeda linked group Al-Nusra Front, were: 'This is for our guys'.

Maj Filipov, who leaves behind a wife and a four-year-old daughter, was flying at 4,000 metres (13,123ft) when he was hit, and the jet crashed nearby.

Fighter: Maj. Filipov reportedly shot and killed two rebel fighters with this handgun before he killed himself

Earlier reports suggested Maj. Filipov had been captured by rebels and separately that he had been killed in fighting.

But later it became clear that he had exploded his grenade to take his own life rather than be captured.

Syrian and Russian forces were reported to be on the ground at the scene of the incident aiming to retrieve the pilot's remains.

Russia's defence ministry confirmed the pilot had been shot down, saying: 'A Russian Su-25 aircraft crashed during a flight over the Idlib de-escalation zone.

'The pilot had enough time to announce he had ejected into the zone, under the control of al-Nusra Front fighters.

'The pilot was killed in fighting against terrorists.'

Russia has been supporting the Syrian government in Idlib where President Bashar Al-Assad's forces have been fighting against the Al-Nusra Front.

After Maj Filipov was shot down on Saturday, Russian jets intensified their raids on rebel-held towns and cities in the province

Russia's Defence Ministry denies aiming at civilians and says it targets only hardline Islamist militants in Syria. Pictured: Maj Filippov

Civil defence sources in Idlib said air raids struck the towns of Kafr Nubl and Maasran, as well as the cities of Saraqeb, Maarat al Numan and Idlib, and that several deaths and dozens of injuries were reported as rescuers dug through the rubble.

A hospital was hit in Maarat al Numan, witnesses and residents said, and at least five people were feared killed in another attack that damaged a residential building in Kafr Nubl.

Video recorded by rescuers showed babies on stretchers being rushed by civil defence workers out of the damaged hospital while other rescuers fought to extinguish a fire.

In Idlib city, the provincial capital, one witness said a five-storey building was leveled and that at least fifteen people were feared dead.
