Over 270 injured in China metro train crash
Beijing, Sep 27 (PTI)

Over 270 passengers, including four foreigners, were injured after two metro trains today collided in Shanghai, China's largest metropolis, due to signal failure, two months after a deadly bullet train crash claimed 40 lives.

So far, a total of 271 people have received treatment in hospitals, said Xu Jianguang, director of Shanghai's health bureau told reporters in the eastern Chinese metropolis.

Most of the injuries are bruises and bone fractures, but there are also external head traumas, doctors said. An estimated 20 injured people are in critical condition but the injuries are not life-threatening, they said.

Xu said that 180 people have already been discharged from hospital.

The accident occurred when a metro train smashed into the rear of another one after the signal system went haywire, sending the busy suburban network in China's commercial hub into a spin.

Four foreigners, including two Japanese, one each from Canada and the Philippines, suffered minor injuries.

The accident second of its kind attributed to faulty signal system took place as top Indian railway officials held talks with their Chinese counterparts to explore possibilities of using China's high speed technology back home.

Most of the injuries in today's crash were bruises and bone fractures and there were also external head wounds, doctors said.

The crash occurred about at 2:51 pm following a signal system failure at one station on the Line 10 subway, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co said in a statement, adding that about 500 passengers had been evacuated from the trains.

Photos posted on weibo.com, China's popular Twitter-like microblogging service, showed several passengers bleeding, with firefighters entering the train to rescue the injured.

I read a news report that all this is the result of a 'get quick modern' mindset that glosses over the reality and technical soundness!

The problem is the media hype of India and China. THe new money has gone in to our heads. We need to calm down and reflect on to what we have done so far and what we need to do. Bullet trains are non-sensical and I hope we do not get these in India.

Terrible...

It shows that in both nations of 1 billion, there is still little regard for the lay worker's life if it means a couple more bucks saved instead of better safety and security
