Nirmala Sitharaman, who was promoted to the cabinet today, is the country's new Defence Minister. She takes charge of the crucial ministry from Arun Jaitley, who has been saying for some time that he would like to focus his attention entirely on the Finance Ministry.

Ms Sitharaman, 58, is India's first woman Defence Minister after Indira Gandhi. She is a Rajya Sabha member.

After nine new ministers were inducted today and four ministers including Ms Sitharaman were elevated to the cabinet, there was confusion over whether Mr Jaitley would remain Defence Minister for now.

"I will wait for the portfolio to be announced," Ms Sitharaman told NDTV today after she took oath as a cabinet minister, when asked about what her priority would be in her new role as a member of the cabinet.

There has been concern, given aggravated tension with Pakistan and China, about the lack of a full-time defence minister.

In other major changes today, Piyush Goyal has been assigned Railways, he takes over from Suresh Prabhu who offered his resignation weeks ago after two major train accidents in Uttar Pradesh. Mr Prabhu was given the Commerce Ministry which was held by Ms Sitharaman.

A huge responsibility on her, dont know much about her,so too early to predict.

She is a very dedicated to work , whatever allocated to her.

I remember, When Sitharaman was give the commerce ministry, as an independent charge, it was a role she grew into after an initial period when her direct manner was markedly different from what officials were used to. But of late, she has been seen to have come into her own, gaining control over her turf and dealing with trade negotiations with increasing certainty.

Now , I hope such whopping rise in Defense Sector....

Few Points everyone should know about New DM
  1. She was the one who had put a paper on 100% defence FDI relaxation need after meeting almost all OEMs who wanted a MII venture for hi end technology building in India but were wary of stringent policies of home country not allowing it without full control.
  2. She was met by Marilyn Hewson Chairman, CEO and president of LM last July 2016 and held a detailed discussion about LM plan under MII . it was called India Innovation Growth Programme where Ms Hewson met all stake holders from politicians to government officials to industrialists.
  3. DM NS had nudged LM towards Tata Group for F16 programme and had suggested how this will help towards MII and Skill India both and help increase the footprint for localised supply. In case of a critical tech, a one off view can be taken on merit basis. It was suggested that over time LM plant in India will make certain critical parts for F-35 for cost efficiency but they cannot do it so under a JV owing to Senate restriction, F35 program partners issues and since the entity is not directly under US gov control. The defence sectors reform will be undertaken where the MII and Skill India is as per GOI needs and relaxation in the form of reforms will be done as well.

During her tenure as a BJP spokeperson and as a minister of state under Arun Jetley's finance ministry she performed her role remarkably. That's one of the reasons why she is promoted to the cabinet rank. When Narendra Modi government was formed everybody was expecting a cabinet berth for her. She needs to carry over her good performance to her new ministry. As a defence minister she needs to emulate her predecessor (Manohar Parrikar). He left such a big void to be filled in. But it's too early to comment but let's hope for an able defence minister.

Nirmala Sitharaman is India’s first woman Defence Minister. Before this, former India Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has held this post. (PTI)

Nirmala Sitharaman has been chosen as India’s new Defence Minister. Promoted today, Sitharaman has taken charge of the key defence ministry from Arun Jaitley, who had expressed his intent openly of preferring not to carry the added responsibility. 58 year old, Sitharaman, is India’s first woman Defence Minister. Before this, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had held this post. As nine new ministers were inducted on Sunday, four ministers including Sitharaman were elevated to the cabinet. Before her selection, there was speculation on whether Jaitley would remain serving as Defence Minister.

Jaitley has been handling the ministry after Manohar Parrikar quit to become the Goa’s chief minister. After Parrikar’s exit India lacked a full-time Defence Minister which led to several criticisms regarding many critical tasks including military reforms. With increased pressure on both India-Pakistan and India-China borders, there was an increased need for a full-time minister to tackle its issues. Sitharaman’s selection came as a bit of a surprise as Nitin Gadkari’s name was recently speculated for the post. Also, after the success in Doklam Standoff, Jaitley was expected to keep the post. However, Jaitley had indicated he may not be defence minister for much longer.

Sitharaman has served as a Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs under the Ministry of Finance headed by Arun Jaitley and the Minister of Commerce and Industry with independent charge. She is a Rajya Sabha member and represents Karnataka in the Parliament.

Formerly a member of the National Commission for Women, Sitharaman has an MA degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University. She also has a PhD in the Indo-European textile trade within the GATT framework and MPhil.

She had joined the BJP in 2006 even though her husband Dr Parakala Prabhakar had joined the Prajarajyam party floated by film star Chiranjeevi in 2007. It was during Nitin Gadkari’s tenure as BJP president that Nirmala Sitharaman was enlisted as one of the six party spokespersons in March 2010. In May 2016, Nirmala Sitharaman was sworn in as Minister of State (Independent Charge).

I think this is good:

The FINANCE part of Defense ministry (procurement, indigenisation, etc) will be well run by her, because she knows finance, trade, economics.

The DEFENCE part of Defense ministry (strategy, technology, alliances, etc) will continue to be run by PMO, which is good.

First of all,Congratulations to the new DM.

Now,on her abilities as new Raksha Mantri,It would be too early to comment.I'd wait for at least a month before praising/criticizing her as a DM.

Though,I would've liked a person from military background as DM instead a civilian, especially when we have one capable person available for that role,Gen. V.K. Singh.

Yes, only time will tell if we can add her name to thee list.
So, we should wait for the result.
What is she perform better than Indira Gandhi!!
we must give a chance to prove her capability as defense Ministry.
Foreign Ministry is OK. Defence Ministry, Never OK.
No Defense Minister have to fight on ground zero.. It is solely a management job with a lot of strategic decisions..
