China's population despite being a billion plus does not live in a congested environment like in India,therefore the impact would be lesser as compared to India.Also i forgot to mention that unlike India, China has built mechanisms like underground tunnels and warning systems in it's major cities which were constructed during the era of Sino Soviet split.
Does not matter, china as a nation will be finished once the eastern seaboard has been wiped out. China will not survive in the underground tunnels which can only hide a few ICBM's. Their economy and 80% of the population will not survive it. What warning systems? The are none. They will probably try to save the top brass and CPC big honchos but the rest are toast.

We first tested in 1974 second series was in 1998. Just because it took you and others all these years doe'nt mean that we too will take that much time. Look at our Mars mission. Where everyone failed in first attempt, including your country, we were sucessful at show string budget.
There is no difference between your Mar mission and Moon mission on technic requirement. Since you already got to moon and Americans provided your deep space control, all you need is a little bit extra luck.

But thermonuclear bomb is a completely new thing comparing to atomic bomb. You can't reach that level without further test.

It us not as if we are sleeping since 1974.
But you can't push your nuclear knowledge to next level by only working on paper. You need TEST!

about big nuke devices. We dont have to carry them on our backs. We will nuse missiles and planes if we ever have to use them in anger.

Its does not matter how big or small your gun is what matters is that it kills.
Nobody cares how you deliver your bomb. As long as MIRV is concerned, you need thermonuclear bomb and a minimized war head.

it seems next Agni-5 test is scheduled on 31st Jan, india local time between 8:00AM- 12:00AM...
if this launch window is missed due to some reason, another two windows would be on the following two days.

two restricted zones are set, one for the first two stages ,one for the 3rd and RV...total length: 5000 km...

This test is for the canister version and when it is out of canister it is for validation of the missile range, hopefully thereafter it will be inducted. Best part it will be great tribute to our "Agni man". All credit to him to make sure that we have this capability against the China. Wishing for successful test.

Later added: I think they are going to give Dr. Chandra big send off part, after the test.

Maiden canister trial of Agni-V a roaring success

The missile is expected to be inducted into service in a year after a few more canister trials.

Marking another technological milestone in the country's missile programme, the maiden canister-based trial of India's most potent strategic missile, Agni-V was successfully carried out for its full range of more than 5,000 km from the Wheeler Island, off the Odisha coast on Saturday.

A DRDO missile technologist who was associated with the launch described it as a grand success and said it was a perfect launch. Another missile technologist said it would be the footprint for future configuration of Agni-V.

The missile sealed in a canister and mounted on a TATRA track was launched in its final deliverable configuration at 8.10 am. As soon as the auto-launch command was given, the 17-metre-long Agni-V lifted off majestically leaving a trail of orange flames and leapt into a sunny sky after the gas generator at the bottom of the canister gave it a forceful thrust.

Within moments after its ejection and upon reaching a height of around 30 metres, the first stage got ignited and separated. As it reached a height of more than 500 km and began descending rapidly, the subsequent two stages also got decoupled with clockwork precision and the missile's nose cone carrying the dummy payload withstood searing temperatures of more than 3,000 degrees Celsius and impacted near the pre-designated point in the Indian Ocean after a flight of about 20 minutes.

The 17-metre-long, thee-stage solid-fuelled missile, developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is expected to boost India's nuclear deterrence capability along with other strategic missiles in Agni series. Agni-V is capable of delivering a 1.1 nuclear warhead over a distance of 5,000 km and the range of missile can cover most parts of China and Europe.

A network of radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations, besides two ships stationed near the impact point monitored the health of the missile during its flight and recorded the terminal event.

This was the third successful flight test of the Inter- Continental Ballistic Missile and the first canister trial.

The missile is expected to be inducted into service in a year after a few more canister trials.

Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister Avinash Chander, the architect of Agni-V, who will be relinquishing office on Saturday, was present along with other top DRDO missile technologists, including Director-General of Missiles and Strategic Systems, Dr.V.G.Sekaran and Research Centre Imarat Director, G. Satheesh Reddy.

Congrats to all and Specially to Dr. Chandra and his team. It is great gift from him to the nation. Now we can target all parts of China with nukes, if things get bad.

We have now taken care of two front war.

Canister is a container for the missiles.
My guess is silo based missiles have less mobility and so less survivability, but canister based missiles can be transported on road mobile all-terrain vehicles (TEL: Transporter-Erector Launcher) thereby increasing survivability.

Am I right or am i wrong?

notice the time they take to fill up the A3 missile (it is solid fuel missile).............. liquid fuel (for RV) :cool2:

Now with canister, they need to do all these, before they seal the canister.

so to launch it, all they need to do is to take it, to launch site, enter the target data, erect the missile and press (fire).

Meaning all the time of fueling up missile has been saved. This is the time when the missile is most venerable to enemy attack as it is in open, getting fueled.

You can also say that (advantage of canister), we can put these A5 canister under ground like silo and hide it. When the time comes, just press the button and it will go all the way to pre-recorded target.. Even the PM can do this from his bunker with launch codes....like to US and Russia has.....:wave:

Just in case, we are attacked by Pak or Chini or Pak Chini together.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT: India's ICBM Agni 5 was successfully test fired from a canister today 31 Jan 2015 at 0809 hrs. It was a historic moment when for the first time in India, an ICBM about 17m long and weighing over 50 ton majestically rose from the confines of its canister. At the predetermined moment, having risen to about 20 meters height, it's first stage motor ignited lifting Agni 5 into the sky. The flight continued on its predetermined path during which the second, all composite light weight motor, followed by the third, innovatively designed conical all composite rocket motor propelled the missile into space taking it to a height of more than 600 km. The missile, after reaching peak of its trajectory turned towards earth to continue its journey towards the intended target with a speed now increasing due to the attraction of earth's gravitational pull and its path precisely directed by the advanced on-board computer and inertial navigation system. As the missile entered earth's atmosphere, the atmospheric air rubbing the skin of the missile during the re-entry phase raised the temperature to beyond 4000 degree Celsius. However, the indigenously designed and developed carbon-carbon composite heat shield continued to burn sacrificially protecting in the process the payload, maintaining the inside temperature below 50 degree Celsius. Finally, commanded by the on-board computer with a support of highly accurate ring laser gyro based inertial navigation system, the most modern micro inertial navigation system (MINS), fully digital control system and advanced compact avionics, the missile hit the designated target point accurately, meeting all mission objectives.

Ajit Doval, National Security Advisor congratulated Dr Avinash Chander and the Mission team for the successful launch, over a tele-conversation. Congratulating team Agni, Air Chief Marshal Anup Raha, PVSM, AVSM, VM, Chairman Chiefs of staff committee and Chief of Air Staff, who had witnessed the entire launch operations from the control room called it a great achievement. Lt Gen Amit Sharma AVSM, VSM, Cdr in Chief Strategic Forces Command, also present on the occasion, called it a fantastic achievement.

Addressing the gathering and project team, a happy and satisfied Dr Avinash Chander, Secretary DDR&D, SA to RM and DG DRDO said, "This is a momentous occasion. It is India's first ever ICBM launch from a canister and is a giant leap in country's deterrence capability". He termed it a copy book launch with entire command network functioning in loop. Dr Avinash Chander congratulated the entire DRDO community for the tremendous efforts put in by them in making the country self reliant in the area of long range missile systems. He thanked them for demonstrating such a great success on the last day of his work in DRDO. Dr Avinash said, "I cherished every moment of my service in DRDO and I thank you all for the relentless support given to me all through. I am leaving with a great satisfaction of equipping the country with such advanced missiles. I wish the entire DRDO community a great future".

Earlier, announcing the success of the mission, Dr VG Sekaran, Mission Director, Prog. Dir. Agni and DG Missiles and Strategic Systems said "All mission objectives have been achieved, down range ships have confirmed final splashdown, the mission is a great success and it is a momentous occasion". A jubilant Dr Rajesh Kr Gupta, Project Director Agni5, described the success as "historic achievement; a dream fulfilled".

The Ships located in midrange and at the target point tracked the Vehicle and witnessed the final event. All the radars and electro-optical systems along the path monitored all the parameters of the Missile and displayed in real time. The earlier two flights of Agni 5, fully successful were in open configuration and had already proved the missile. Today's launch from a canister integrated with a mobile sophisticated launcher, was in its deliverable configuration that enables launch of the missile with a very short preparation time as compared to an open launch. It also has advantages of higher reliability, longer shelf life, less maintenance and enhanced mobility.

Dr G Satish Reddy, DS & Director, RCI, Dr Manas K Mandal, DS & DG LS, Dr GS Malik, CCR&D HR, Dr Tessy Thomas, Director ASL, Dr PS Subramaniam DS & PGDCA and Dir ADA, Dr Manmohan Singh Dir VRDE, Shri Manjit Singh, Director TBRL and Dr SK Patel, Director Quality Reliability and Safety were among other senior DRDO scientists present on the occasion.

Mobile truck mounted BM are better than Silo based BM as they are not statically located and it is difficult for enemy to locate them.

Mobile BM are either Canister based or bare missile mounted like Agni series.
Bare missile are exposed to environment like moisture, heat, dust, etc. which degrade the performance, capability and life of the missile. Best example is metal fatigue.
In Canister based missiles the missile is enclosed in an metal canister which is filled with noble (inert) gas at a particular pre-determined environment to minimize degradation the performance, capability and life of the missile.
Canister based missiles tend to require less maintenance.
Also Canister based missiles are easy to transport compare to bare missile.

Missiles itself doesnt get better. It allows greater operational readiness. We can go on hair trigger alert should we chose to with canister launched missile. Keeps the missile well protected. Allows greater survivability as they are highly mobile. Make roads that lead to nowhere, tunnels under mountains etc to keep the missile hidden from prying eyes.

A leading US defence thinktank has referred to India’s latest Agni-VI intercontinental ballistic missile project and warned in a recent report that the competing missile technologies of India and its giant eastern neighbour China may “deepen nuclear competition between the two Asian nuclear powers”.

The thinktank — Federation of American Scientists — has referred to a US defence intelligence agency report mentioning India’s latest Agni-VI intercontinental ballistic missile project, which is expected to involve the deployment of multiple warheads on a single missile system. This is referred to in scientific terms as “multiple independently-targetable re-entry vehicle” technology that is capable of hitting multiple targets.

Already, the earlier-tested 5,500 km-range Agni-V ICBM is expected to provide India with a strategic nuclear deterrent against China whenever it is inducted into the armed forces since it will be capable of hitting all parts of that country.

The Agni-VI missile project is now set to take Indian missile technology to the next level beyond the Agni-V.

The observations on India in the FAS report came in the context of the US thinktank referring to the latest Pentagon annual report that had claimed that China’s ICBM force now includes the “MIRV-equipped Mod 3 (DF-5)” missile system”.

The FAS report states, “The deployment of a MIRVed DF-5 also raises serious questions about China’s strategic relationship with India. The Pentagon report states that in addition to US missile defence capabilities, ‘India’s nuclear force is an additional driver behind China’s nuclear force modernisation’.

There is little doubt that Chinese MIRV has the potential to nudge India into the MIRV club as well.

Indian weapons designers have already hinted that India may be working on its own MIRV system and the US defence intelligence agency recently stated that ‘India will continue developing an ICBM, the Agni-VI, which will reportedly carry multiple warheads’.”

“If the Chinese MIRV triggers the Indian MIRV it would deepen nuclear competition between the two Asian nuclear powers and reduce security for both. This ... also requires the other MIRVed nuclear-armed states to limit their MIRV and offensive nuclear warfighting strategies,” the FAS report states.

With India’s Agni missile technology prowess in the limelight once again due to the pioneering efforts in previous decades of India’s “Missile Man” and former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam who passed away on Monday.
