Suspected Maoists on Tuesday shot dead a police sub-inspector in Nuapada district of Odisha a few hours after abducting him, police said. Reports said about 10 alleged armed Maoists waylaid Kruparam Majhi, ASI of Dharambandha police outpost in the district (about 550 km southwest of Bhubaneswar), at about 11.45 am in a forest area when he was going on a motorcycle along with a constable, Debaranjan Sahu, to deliver a water tanker at a CRPF camp at Lodra in the Sunabeda forest sanctuary.
The Maoists took Majhi along with them, while letting Sahu go.
"After getting the information, the police launched an extensive search to rescue Majhi," said Nuapada sub-divional police officer PK Patra.
However, the police party spotted Majhi's bullet ridden body about three hours later at a place not very far from the CRPF camp, with his hands and legs tied. The abductors did not claim responsibility of his murder.
Sunabeda sanctuary bordering Chhatisgarh has been in the grips of the Mainpuri division of the Maoists who have been oppositing anti-Naxal operations in the area.
